I recently spent several nights at El Portal and was very disappointed. While the property had some very nice features, it did not meet my expectations which were based on the TripAdvisor and Andrew Harpers Hideaway's reviews and its own web site.
The Inn and its management seems to be suffering from an identity crisis--they do not know whether they want it to be a luxurious boutique style inn or a charming bed and breakfast. As a result, its suceeds at neither. I found the rooms (which looked so charming on the web site) to be rather "tricked-up". The owners declared objective of designing the rooms around the fixtures did not result in comfortable rooms. "Charm" without functionality does not translate into a luxurious experience --There was no comfortable chair, no place from which to comfortably view the television, no place to set my wine glass (or anything else) while in the spa tub and no soundproofing to ensure a decent night's sleep or our upstairs neighbor's privacy.
I did not have any significant problems with the staff or management--some were pleasant but some seemed rather annoyed by the presence of guests. They were at times a bit pretentious (see identity crisis above) and their inquiries as to our satisfaction and offers of assistance seemed superficial and insincere. Benny (apparently affiliated but not actually an employee of El Portal) was the exception. He was terrific.
I wiil return to Sedona--it is an amazing place! I will not stay at El Portal again nor will I recommend it to any of my friends.
