“A cozy retreat in the heart of downtown Sedona, with great views from the balcony.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2010

We (DW and I) stayed for one night at the Orchards Inn as a stopover on a trip from Utah back to Phoenix to catch a flight back home. Since we were arriving in the afternoon and leaving early the next morning, we knew we would not be doing any hiking, so we opted for something convenient to the shops in Sedona and the Orchard Inn fit the bill perfectly.

The inn is located just off the main street through town (AZ 89A), and right behind the Orchards Restaurant (east side of the road). We actually missed it on the first pass through town (coming from the north), but caught sight of the restaurant sign on the return trip. We arrived about 2:00, so about an hour before check-in time, but the gentleman at the front desk gave us a parking pass so that we could ditch the car in the hotel lot and spend some time walking through Sedona while our room was made ready. The desk clerk called when the room was ready, so we walked back to get the key and get settled.

We were in building 4 and had suite 432 (I think). The room was great. We had a king-suite with a good size living room, kitchenette, good size bathroom and a nice bedroom. Only odd thing was that the bathroom did not connect to the bedroom, but rather was accessed through the kitchenette, but that was not an issue. There were flat screen TVs in both the living area and bedroom, plus a gas fireplace in the living area. And of course there was the view from the balcony. The vista from the balcony overlooks the beautiful red rocks that have helped to make Sedona famous. The view includes the formations known as “Snoopy” and “Lucy”.

There is a complimentary breakfast included with the stay. The buffet is located in the Orchards Restaurant, again located in front of the hotel and just s short walk from any of the buildings in the hotel complex. There is also a internet enabled computer in the lobby for guest use.

Even though this was just a one-night stay, we did enjoy our time in Sedona and at the Orchards Inn. The convenient location, great view and cozy room are all things that will lead us to stay in the Orchards Inn again when we next return to Sedona.

The Orchards Inn has fabulous views of the Red Rocks.

PROS:
- Clean, updated rooms.
- Amazing views from your balcony
- Nice beds/bedding.
- Great free breakfast in the restaurant next door
- Convenient parking
- Location right in the middle of everything.
- Great staff

CONS:
- The chairs on the balcony have no arms - not so comfy
- Guests can smoke on their balconies, meaning their smoke drifts into your room. Boo!
- We were in a room that had a connecting door to the room next door and could hear our neighbors talking.
- I had not been to Sedona and expected that it would have a quaint downtown area. It does not. This hotel is only "in the middle of everything" if you like T-shirt shops, fudge shops, and trinket sho ps.

Loved this hotel -- great location close to lots of restaurants and shops. Views of the red rocks from the balcony are breathtaking. Including breakfast was a pleasant surprise and added the value.

Nice hotel. Rooms were tastefully decorated and clean. Location was perfect, right in the center of town and within walking distance to shops and restaurants. There were no elevators whch was a problem when handling luggage. Would stay there again.

You will not get a better view in Sedona. Well worth the price. Breakfast buffet is great.
Older hotel ... Rooms are nice and well decorated. Shopping within walking distance..
Pool area is a bit small, but still nice. Hotel staff were very helpful.

The Orchards Inn is in a great location in the main street area of Sedona. Most of the other hotels are not along this main section. What this means is that you can walk around the shops, galleries and restaurants, and not have to find a parking place or other transit in order to do so. An additional point about the location is that the view, as others have mentioned, is incredible. Granted, it is hard to have a bad view in Sedona, but opening your hotel room window to stare right out at “Snoopy rock” is pretty darn cool.

Additionally, the Orchards comps a very nice breakfast buffet at their restaurant, which includes eggs, meat, pancakes, French toast, fruit, salsa, muffins and yogurt. We didn’t expect such a complete meal for no additional cost and having it in the restaurant, with terrace dining, was a nice touch, rather than a hotel lobby type experience. We never ate any other meals there, but the menu actually looked quite good and they offered a discount for hotel guests if we had chosen to eat there.

The pool area is also quite nice, tucked on the mountain side. It is small but lovely, with vines and nice hardscaping. Unfortunately, there isn’t much of a view from the pool because of it being sunken down, but it was a nice escape after a warm day of hiking.

One complaint to note is that we checked in around 10:30 p.m. and arrived, after a long drive from the Phoenix airport, to find a sign on the lobby door that we needed to check in at the sister hotel (L’Auberge) down the hill. This in itself was perfectly fine, but our frustration was that we had provided our check-in time when we reserved the room and would have appreciated a courtesy note from the hotel staff to let us know that based on check-in time we would check-in at L’Auberge. That way, we would have driven there first, instead of driving to Orchards, parking, unloading our stuff, then seeing the sign and having to pack the suitcases back in the car and leave again.

Lastly, once we were in a “deluxe” room, it was a nice experience (please note, my ratings of sleep quality, etc. are based on a deluxe room), but it is imperative as part of this review to delineate between the two different types of rooms. I booked a “standard” room on the Orchards’ website. It didn’t appear to be much different from “deluxe” except that every standard room had a fireplace and not all of the deluxes did. However, upon arriving in our room, the difference became very obvious … let me translate: “standard” means “old” and “deluxe” means “new.” The photos on the website of nicely decorated rooms are all deluxe rooms. The standards are actually not even in the same building, and are decorated with leftovers from the 1970s, along with older plumbing, older sliding doors, and even old-style keys (even the shampoo is different) – oh, and the walls are much thinner in the standards than in the deluxes. The standard rooms aren’t bad, but also weren’t what I was expecting after seeing the photos online. Once we asked, we were moved to a deluxe room (at $20 more), and that process has no complaints associated with it. My main purpose in providing this information is not to complain, but to ensure that you do not make the same mistake I did – if you are okay with the older, run-down feel, then save some money and book the standard room, since you still get the same great location, nice breakfast, etc. But, if you are attracted to the hotel partly because of the style you see online, be sure to book a deluxe room so you are not disappointed.
