“Still an "undiscovered gem"”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

We have lunch here fairly often, since we live in the neighborhood, and everything about Golden Goose gets better and better, although the food has always been good. Today my husband had a favorite hamburger, almost more than he could manage, and I had my favorite, the turkey, cream cheese, cranberry sauce sandwich on 'home baked' nut bread with ample cole slaw. Sandy and Pablo gave us excellent service, as always, and the decor continues to be upgraded. Patio dining looks very comfortable and attractive, too.
More locals should discover what many visitors already know, that this West Sedona restaurant is worthy of more attention!
P.S. Great breakfasts, too!

“Regular menu okay; tour meals not okay”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

We were on a tour and ate at this restaurant several times (breakfast/lunch/dinner) over a five day period. The space they put all of us in was inadequate. We were seated at several long tables with little space between them and NO space between each chair. The waitress could only access one end of the long tables and was passing plates over our heads and putting cups/plates at the end of the table for people to pass down -- it was crowded even for a sardine. Serving coffee was a challenge for sure.

The eggs I received every morning were cold (I suggest somehow they serve faster or warm the plates). The french toast my husband ordered not only looked disgusting (like cheap grocery store bread covered in lumpy gravy -- it was a bourbon sauce) it didn't taste good. He should have sent it back but we were under time restraints because of the tour. The wait staff were terrific and worked hard under difficult circumstances.

All that said, we did eat there on our own for two breakfasts and ordered off the regular menu -- and were not packed with a shoehorn into our seat, yeah! -- and the meal was fairly good. The Barking Frog across the street, where we ate three lunches and a dinner on our own, was delicious with good service and reasonable prices for lunch (dinner was expensive but wonderful).

We are always disheartened whenever a guest has an unsatisfactory experience in our restaurant. We evaluate the comments and try to make adjustments accordingly. Your complaint about our bourbon-walnut French toast is the first we have ever encountered about this dish. We are, therefore, in a quandary as to whether a modification is needed or if it was just a dish that was not to your liking. Additionally, we’ve provided meals to more than a 1,000 Road Scholar Program participants during the past 4 years, and usually we receive rave reviews and compliments about our meals and service from this organization. (Note other TripAdvisor reviews by Road Scholar participants). We don’t skimp on the quality just because it’s a tour group.

In all honesty, we do believe your complaint about the seating arrangement for your group is justified. Your group was the first of the 2014 tour season. We tried a new seating arrangement to give your group more privacy in our smaller (but secluded) dining area. We were able to give the group that privacy, but that led to other issues (not enough "elbow" room, etc.) We realize that arrangement was a big mistake and we will not make that error in the future. Our apologies for the poor experience you had while dining with us. We wish we could do this one over.

“Love (and Dinner) is Lovelier, the Second Time Around”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

After a rough dinner outing here on a weeknight in September 2013, yet many very nice breakfasts since then, we decided (with a $50 gift certificate courtesy of kind owner Debbie Santa Cruz) to give Golden Goose another try for dinner - with an out-of-town guest in tow.
We ordered the calamari appetizer, which was very nice. I enjoyed the perfectly-chilled Chilean “Veramonte” sauvignon blanc; nicely fruity and crisp. My partner and our friend split a bottle of J.Lohr "Seven Oaks" cabernet sauvignon, also delightful, served properly by our attentive waiter Ruffino. I ordered the "build-your-own-pasta" dish with fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and run-dried tomatoes, while my partner ordered the Prime Rib, medium-rare. Ruffino kindly suggested that her order would probably be more toward medium - owing to the nature of Prime Rib being previously-prepared and heated up to serve, which she accepted. Indeed, on arrival it was medium, heated au jus, a delicious cut of beef (which leftover portion I happily ate for lunch the next day!)
Our guest ordered the Delmonico steak, medium, with sweet potato fries, which were prepared to order and enjoyed. A healthy cut of beef, a slice of that also came home and was consumed for lunch the next day along with some leftover fries. My small Caesar salad was just right, as were two cups of seafood chowder delivered to my partner and our guest, hot, tasty, just needing a little bit of pepper to personal taste. Wish I'd had a bowl!
We skipped dessert because we were nicely stuffed by the preceding courses, although we were tempted. Oh, and I should mention that throughout our service, not only was Ruffino available, knowledgeable, and cheerful, but able assistant Pablo was ever-present to ensure topped-up water, deft handling of our leftovers into take-home boxes, and checking in to ensure we were generally content. A great team! (We’ve worked with Ruffino previously at sister West Sedona restaurant Café Jose, where he was always a bright spot on premises.)
One tiny suggestion: If you're going to serve quality beef, particularly Prime Rib, the gentle-tasting creamed horseradish side is welcome, but by all means have raw, straight-up horseradish available for the serious carnivores. My partner (a horseradish connoisseur) was somewhat disappointed. More than compensating for that small detail, the bottled-wine prices here are amazingly low. Another reason to dine in West Sedona!
All-in-all, a fine recovery from a prior stumble. We finally understand why many of our Sedona friends and neighbors have been so positive about Golden Goose as a dinner venue. It truly is a moderately-priced, casual yet fine-dining establishment in West Sedona. Worth your time, worth your money, with service staff and an owner who clearly demonstrate their willingness to please their customers.
We'll be back for dinner again!

“Valentines Day, excellent!”
Reviewed February 19, 2014

Had a 7:00 reservation for Valentines day, we arrived at 6:30 to have a drink at the bar as it was still happy hour. They stated they would seat us asap and we told them that's ok we will be in the bar. We got a bottle of wine for 1/2 price and it was wonderful. Decided to get the Valentines Day dinner for 2 it was a 20 oz steak and you could cut it with a knife served with potatoes a choice of side and a choice of salad or soup. We got the chicken chowder soup delicious and the side was saute spinach it was very good but the steak was the bomb. Too full for dessert and got out of there on Valentines Day for less then 80.00 including tip! We tipped well. The service was excellent!
