Renting a jeep and going off on our own was one of the highlights of our visit. The people at Barlow’s made the experience easy. They have two-door and four-door jeeps for rent. The vehicles are in great condition and come with a number of unexpected extras, e.g., satellite radio , ac , power windows and mirrors. These are really well-equipped vehicles. They also include a cooler with ice so you can pack a picnic if you want.
When we picked up our jeep we were given maps and detailed explanations of the various trails we could take. These are not “off-road” experiences. The trails are maintained gravel roadways of varying difficulty. We decided to start on the easier trails first to get comfortable with driving our jeep. We did Soldier Pass and Schnebly Hill Road. Both were a lot of fun. However, we found Schnebly Hill just a very rough ride, even though it’s flat most of the way. On our second outing we went on the more adventuresome trails and had a ball. We did Outlaw Trail and Diamondback Gulch. It was great getting back into the mountains and seeing those majestic peaks up close.
We took two different models on our trips, the Rubicon and the Sport. If you want a “more controlled” ride I suggest the Rubicon. You can disengage the sway bars on this model and it gives a more controlled ride in my experience. That’s not to say we didn’t enjoy the Sport. It was just different.
We always felt safe in our jeep. It handled the trails very well. We also felt well-prepared by the staff at Barlow’s. All in all it’s an experience I would highly recommend.
