One of the most classic vistas in Sedona, Cathedral Rock offers great photos, and a pleasant hike, if a little bit confusing.

We planned to be there at the end of the day, so that we could catch the sunset. After a long drive down Verde Valley School Road (which turns to unpaved about ½ way through the trip) and arrived at the trailhead with about 25 mins to sunset. However, the map at the trailhead is a bit confusing, and we went right instead of left, a mistake we didn’t realize til we’d hiked about ¾ mile. After backtracking, and resetting, we were not able to get to the Red Rocks Crossing site prior to sunset. We settled for pictures from the trail -- which were stunning by the way.

It was our last full day in AZ, so we had no chance to try again. I will be going back to get to Red Rocks Crossing at sunset! This is worth the trip!

The park is a little had to find if you don't have a map of the area. (or even if you do) Go slow down this road or you will miss it. The first time I was there we drove right by it. There are many wonderful places to stop along that road. It is a bit winding.
When you do get to the park you will need to pay $8. A map is $1 more. Not sure you really need it unless you are going to explore the whole park. The walk is easy and the views were breathtaking and peaceful. There were a lot of people on this route, but everyone was so quiet, all enjoying the outdoors. We especially liked the Budda Beach.

The church is built of the rock. Great job in integreting it with the surrounding. Make you think it was there forever. Be patient when driving up to it. You can park at the 1st stop you see and walk the half mile up the hill. Or you can drive right up to the church and park a 100 ft away. Just may take you 10-15 mins to get there.

This is a great, albeit sometimes steep and challenging, hike. It is not particularly long but does require some agility to get to the top. We enjoyed the unique rock formations although the views at the top are less expansive than at other locations. It was cool to see the vortex (large green basalt formation in the middle of the red rock) which you can hike out to if you wish. We saw some dogs on the trail but I don't see how a dog could traverse the sometimes narrow and challenging trail (be prepared to use both hands to get up certain parts)! Definitely go in the morning when there is shade at the top. You'll want the reprieve! The rock formations at the top create a funnel so it is very breezy which is just a wonderful treat as you relax after the hike. Going down is much easier! It's worth it! Go!!

Keep in mind that this is more of a climb/s ramble than a hike. It is a little difficult in the afternoon heat. Next time I would try to arrive before noon. Parking can be a little difficult but it is easy to park down the side of back o beyond road. Make sure you see the saddle and then walk along the wall to the spire.
