“Best view of Sedona Red Rocks”
Reviewed October 26, 2011

The Penrose was the perfect place to stay after our 4 days in Vegas for a Beer convention. The views from every bedroom were superb. The sun came up over the hills every morning. What a great way to wake up. The house was clean and very comfortable along with the beds. Owners and staff were very great. Joy who took our reservations over the phone to Beverly who greeted us with a smile and coffee eash morning.

The breakfast each moring was wounderful and presented in a very nice way. Just be aware that Whitney will want to take your picture after breakfast on the deck with the red rocks behind you. Great touch and you go home with a print and e-mailed the rest. The only slight problem is taking your luggage up the stairs.

We had a great time and would reccommend this B & B
Markie

We recently spent 2 days at the Penrose. It was the perfect start to our vacation. The setting was beautiful, the accommodations were lovely, and Whitney and Chris were exceedingly friendly and accomodating. The staff was very helpful. Counting the days till we return.

Our Labor Day weekend at the Penrose was perfect. The property is lovely and well kept, the views are outstanding and the proprietors could not have been more gracious and helpful. We will go back!

The Penrose is an outstanding place to stay. The location could not be better. It is tucked in the right next too fabulous and famous red rock buttes, and from all windows in our room as well as from the wonderful deck where breakfast is served, the views were outstanding. It is also protected from the touristy hub-bub of Sedona -- it feels more like a private resort oasis. The room was very tasteful and cozy. And the proprietors are fabulous. We stayed for two nights has got fabulous recommendations for hikes both days to suit our needs, as well as dining recommendations. The breakfast was also pure delight. On the sun soaked porch, overlooking the entire valley, poached pear, followed by french toast one more morning, and fruit with an earl grey syrup and an elegant southwestern omlette the other morning, all to meet our food alergy constraints. If all that wasn't enough, there are warm treats (lemon bars one night, chocolate coconut cluster the other) set out nightly at 8:30. The owners also took wonderful pictures of my wife and me -- printed them out, and emailed them to us as a memory of our time. What could be better! The proprieters have a warm and kindly manner while also respecting the guests privacy -- a retired version of your favorite college professor. I can't wait to come back to the Penrose B&B; it has a standout on all accounts. Many thanks to the fine taste and generousity of its proprieters.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed great. Our ground floor room with jacuzzi has a great view and private access.

We loved the Penrose B & B! Whitney and Christie are impeccable and inspired hosts! We felt at home immediately, and enjoyed our conversations with them. We had the most amazing stay! The eating is unparalleled right in Red Rock Country. The views of Bell Rock and Courthouse Rock are astounding...having coffee on the balcony each morning was divine! The room was tasteful, elegant, and comfortable. The food at breakfast was glorious each morning. We hope to visit Sedona again sometime and would not even consider staying elsewhere. We had such a great experience out West. Lisa & Steve

My wife and I recently spent a week in Arizona, primarily to visit the Grand Canyon. We decided to stay in Sedona because relatives had gushed over the red rock vistas there. Sedona is about a two-hour drive south of the Canyon's South Rim. Train and bus transportation to the Canyon also are available.

We found The Penrose B&B on Trip Advisor and marveled at its location at the foot of towering Castle Rock and its views of magnificent red rock buttes and mesas. The Penrose website's depiction of the setting proved quite accurate. Actually the inn is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in Oak Creek village, five miles south of downtown Sedona. It's owned and operated by Whitney and Christie Pope, two former college professors.

There are few faults, if any, to be found here. The rooms (five upstairs with balconies and one on the ground floor) are well-appointed. In the downstairs dining area are baskets of snacks and a small refrigerator stocked with water, soft drinks and various juices. There's room to store a bottle of wine or two as well. A signature feature of The Penrose are Christie's unique, delicious breakfasts, which can be served to you on the inn's spacious elevated deck or on a patio in the shadow of Castle Rock. Christie will share her recipes, too. She also prepares tasty treats for the guests in the evening, as well as homemade peanut brittle in each room.

Whitney, an avid hiker, can direct you to several ideal hiking trails around Sedona, from easy to difficult, as well as to other area attractions. And he takes wonderful photos of all his guests against the red rock backgrounds surrounding The Penrose. You can select the ones you want for free.

The setting, those gourmet breakfasts and the hospitality of the hosts make The Penrose A-One in our opinion.

After carefully considering the websites of the high-end B&B/Inns in Sedona, we selected two different properties to stay in during our eight-day Sedona adventure. Our first five days were spent at the Penrose, and by the end of the second day, we wished we could have stayed there the entire time. Whitney and Christie have thoughtfully created an intimate, warm, inviting environment. The views from our Coconino room were amazing, it felt like we could reach out and touch the Red Rocks from all of our windows, even in the bathroom! We could lay in bed and watch the sunrise slowly transform the rock faces, the highlight of our day! But, that was only the beginning. Next was the two-course gourmet breakfast, with careful attention paid to our gluten-allergies. No problem. And, since iced tea was our preferred morning drink, we got an entire pot to share at our private table. Breakfast was served at tables on the front balcony, the back patio, or the garden room. Pick a table, pick a breath-taking view. And, then, move to the chaise lounge for more scenic bliss. Nowhere else in town were we as close to the Red Rocks as we were at the Penrose. It was hard to leave to do anything else during our visit. The accomodations were spotless, modern, and thoughtfully laid out. The bed was comfortable, complimented by the spectacular view. Whitney was the perfect host, with conversation and insights into the town and life in Sedona. Christie was responsive and helpful. At the end, Whitney presented us with photos he had taken of us, with the famous rocks in the background. A perfect way to remember a perfect vacation!
