“Amazing Amazing view!!”
Reviewed March 10, 2007

This was the highlight of our trip to Sedona. Let me tell you that this place was the best. We travelled with pets and sometimes it is hard to find a neat place to take your furkids.

The Sky Ranch Lodge was awesome. They have a cute little giftshop with tons on neat little things. The room was OK clean and well kept. We had 5 people (2 adults and 6 year old) 2 large dogs and were ok. Not sure I'd want to be stuck inside for a week, but who stays in a room when they are on Vacation??

We really lucked out. We decided at 11pm the night before to drive into Sedona from Very west Tucson. Called and they had a room available. THe next day we got in at night. When we woke the next morning What A View. Wow Make sure that you spend the extra bit of money and get a red rock view room. The Lodge is reasonable, the property is well maintained and It Is At The Top of The Mountain!! Literally, there is 2 sets of 6' fencing arpund the outside perimeter to keep curious kids or sleepwalkers from falling off the mountain. (Don't worry mom and pets owners it is Very Very safe) You can see the whole town from above. I would Definitely stay there again and again and again and am already booked for October 2007!!

Nice heated pool. Was in the 60's for Thanksgiving week 2006. They even have a little trail you can walk and see the adorable valley quail all over.

They have pet walking areas also.

I knew before we left that we should have changed our reservation...after reading the mixed reviews of this place on Trip Advisor, I had the feeling that only those people with very low expectations found this place "nice." But all those comments about the 'great view' kept me hoping...And honestly, at $159 per night, we did have a great view from our rim room window. Unfortunately, you would have to STAY in the rim room and actually sleep there to take advantage of the view we paid for, and that turned out to be more than we could bear. This place was frozen in time, circa 1982, and I think all the bedding, carpets, mattresses, etc. hailed from that era, too. And these linens did not start their lives as high quality stuff to begin with; cheap white sheets, polyester blankets and bedspread--nothing you'd expect in a room that's tipping toward $200/night. The room was clean but creepy and had that nursing home smell...disinfected, but musty. It made you not want to take your socks off when you walked around.
And what about all those comments that people have written about the 'lovely grounds' at the Sky Ranch?? The 'gardens' were a few flower beds and a fake wishing well. The best thing they had going for them were the cute little quail running around. The pool and 'hot tub' were old and small as well. The 'patio' outside our room was a few wooden planks with a couple of metal chairs plunked on it...not comfortable or inviting, no matter how lovely the view.
And sadly, the Lodge personnel I dealt with weren't even particularly friendly, save for the very sweet young woman who graciously checked us out after our one night stay (shortened from our intended 3-day stay.) She very obligingly charged us for only the night we stayed. The others I had contact with (on the phone and while checking in) were not warm or friendly--disinterested is a more accurate description. This really surprised me, considering that they are working in the hospitality industry.
Finally, something to consider when staying ANYWHERE in Sedona...location, location, location. The location of the Sky Ranch Lodge, while lovely, is at the top of a very long, windy, twisty and steep road--okay to drive during the day, but not fun to navigate at night. (And WALKING this road is life-threatening under the best of circumstances--I would never attempt it after dark.) Unfortunately, you have no choice if you want to go anywhere or do anything in town. The only thing up on top of the hill is one very dowdy restaurant at the little airport. With all the wonderful restaurants in Sedona, it would be a shame to waste a mealtime there.
There are many other much higher quality lodging options in Sedona if you're willing to pay the same $160 or so. If someone is going to ask you to fork over that amount, then you should at least have a decent bed at night and a room that looks like it has had a little attention given to it in the last twenty years. This place reminds me of what can happen if you date online: it looked good on the website, but when we met it, it was short, bald and did NOT have a good sense of humor. Take my advice: drink in all the beautiful Red Rock views while you're out and about, hiking or browsing the shops or taking a Jeep tour. Then, treat yourself to a night at a really nice place with a good bed, a good location and a friendly, welcoming staff
Fortunately, the morning after our first--and last-- yucky night at the Sky Ranch, we were walking around the Tlaquapaque shopping district and saw a sign for the El Portal, one of Sedona's most beautiful inns. They were advertising a 'walk in special' and had one available room. With a 50% discount on the first night and 30% on the second night, we ended up paying less than $100 more for the remaining time to stay in the finest inn in Sedona. We must've had some good hotel karma going for us, because our weekend getaway was saved.

This is an older property, but well maintained. Rooms had older fixtures, but were clean and quiet. Rate for a garden room was $85/night.

I stayed at the sky range lodge for one night on my way back too phoenix and found it a really nice place, i had too stay in a smoking room as there were no other rooms available but this wasn`t a problem as there were no traces of smoke smells in the room. I found the staff very friendly and helpful. The grounds are really nice and the short walk too the overlook of Sedona is a must not just for the sunset/sunrise but too chat with the many people who accumulate there. I would say the airport resturant is worth a try if your after a convienient and reasonably cheap meal but there are obviously nicer places in the town. The room i had was eighty dollars for the night which i thought was great value, overall a very good place.

I'll save myself the trouble of typing a lot as I agree with just about everything the previous reviewer has to say about Sky Ranch. You must get a Rim View room if available. We spent so much time on our private deck both during the day and night so it was well worth the extra dollars. The only thing I will disagree with is that we found the the Airport restaurant a delight for breakfast. Good food and great atmosphere.

I know the reviews are mixed here. I think it all depends on your perception of value and what you are willing to pay. If $150 a night is a splurge situation for you, then it's possible that you will be disappointed in the rim view room, due to the dated decor and older bathroom, etc. Perhaps try a garden view room which run under $100 I think. Due to the age of the facility, I would steer clear of the section of rooms that is 2-story.

My husband and I booked a 3-night Sedona trip on about 3 weeks notice and found that most places we wanted to consider were already booked. We like to stay at nice places and were prepared to spend $200-250 night which seeemd to be the going rate at most of the inns and B&B's to get the "room with a view". This will explain why we were so pleasantly suprised to find the Sky Ranch with "Rim views" for the $149-159 range. We knew to expect a dated look, but felt that if the views were real, then it would be worth it. After all, we planned to hike a lot and not be lounging in the room anyway.

The views are totally as described. In a rim view room, you have a panoramic view of the red rocks of West Sedona. Imagine this compared to a view out of a small window of one red rock like the B&B's play up in their ads. The rooms have patio areas shielded with wood slats. We had a standard queen Room 240- which meant that we did not have the fireplace or vaulted ceiling, so what. The room was dated- with old wallpaper and an old mattress and you can hear the activities of your neighbors through the wall. However, we felt that it was clean and that we were paying for the awesome view. We found a dead critter or two, but they were vacuumed up by the cleaning people. The Lodge info book states that mgmt is aware of the concern and all you need to do is let them know if you have a problem. I am not a fan of hotel room comforters, regardless of the price, so I peeled it back and sat on the sheets at all times.

The grounds are lovely. Well manicured and landscaped. The garden area is very pretty and very shady which would be great in the summer. The pool is heated (slightly, at 83 degrees) and there is a spa area as well. This is a family owned and run facility which I like the idea of.

There is a large very popluar public viewing area of the red rocks right before you get to the Lodge entrance. We only went over there so we could get someone to take a picture of the two of us. The rest of the time, we enjoyed the sunsets and mornings from our personal patio. Keep an ear out for the coyote howls!

We ate one breakfast up at the Airport. I don't recommend it. The price of the juice is not listed and I swear it must have been about $4 a glass because there's no other way our bill could have been over $25. My husband ran down the mountain another morning to Ravenheart Coffee. I don't recommend it either, but there is a Starbucks at the Safeway and Wildflour Bread company on the edge of Uptown looked good too.

We recommend the "Airport Mesa" 3.2 mile loop hike. The trailhead is down the hill from the Lodge and the trail takes you all the way around the mesa -up close to the runway at one point. There are gorgeous views of most of the popular red rocks. I think afternoon might be the best time for the sun hitting the rocks in this location.

Also check out the Boynton Canyon hike- it is longer than posted at over 6 miles round trip but worth it if you are in shape. Bell Rock is very cool too and good for kids if you have them.

We veered away from Uptown Sedona and the cheesy shopping and Jeep Tours. Be sure to use the Official Arizona info centers for maps, etc. The people are very helpful

Also, please observe the Red Rocks pass requirement. So many cars did not have passes, and there is really no excuse because signs are posted everywhere and there are pass vending machines at all of the big trailheads.

To sum up a rather long review, we would recommend the Sky Ranch, especially if you think premium views are important and you feel that getting them at up to $100 under the rest of the local spots is a good bargain.

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the property; boy were we wrong!!!! The location and grounds are peaceful, there is no denying that, but the staff and experience was miserable. Over a hundred dollars paid for a sleepless, disturbing night.
We were on the bottom floor, of a two story building. Upon returning to our room after dinner, we were welcomed by what sounded like a ceiling about ready to cave in whenever the guests moved above. It was loud and disturbing, almost like metal rubbing on metal muffled by a pillow. We could not contact the office because it was past office hours. Our sleep (on a horrible mattress) was interrupted at 12, 2, and from 5:15 until 7 (when the guests above left). What was intended to be a relaxing night away was ruined. We high tailed it to the office as soon as they opened at 7, only to be greeted with the phrase, " yeah, that's what happens when you stay on the bottom floor". We obviously were not satisfied with that answer, so we asked to speak with the manager. To make this long saga a bit shorter, when we finally spoke with her, we were lied to and are still waiting for a call back.
We have stayed at many places in Sedona, and have enjoyed each of our experiences. Never again will we stay here. We do not want to spend our vactions in the company of those who practice bad business.
