Go early as you can in the morning as the trail got very crowded and the parking was congested. The toilet facilities are horrible, best to avoid. It got quite warm in the late morning in June.
There is a charge per car and extra for a trail guide.
It had a few beautiful spots. Easy trail for kids.

LOVE this hike, it engages all your senses and for those who want to go the distance the 3.2 marker did seem longer though sand covered. The creek crossings were a breath of fresh air as all one's senses are engaged. The foliage, the babbling brook, the screeching crows, the scents of fresh green lush forest air were a wondrous experience. Disappointed my park pass was not accepted. Though a national forrest individuals are privately paid to run and maintain it.

The canyon is away from the main canyon. The landscape is mystical making you feel as though you are the first to enter it. The path meanders making you want to go further because each turn brings discoveries. Watch for the treasure as small rocks turn into golden coins in one part of the stream.

The West Forks Trail is usually listed as a moderate hike. We would categorize it as easy, and we're both in our 50's! The trail begins after you pay a fee to the Park Service, and there are primitive restrooms at the trailhead. It begins on concrete to some ruins of an old lodge. Then it is mostly a sandy trail with some rock sections, winding through a deciduous forest amidst towering canyon walls. You cross Oak Creek numerous times. At the time we did it, June 26, 2013 the crossings were very easy and we never got our feet wet. There were moments where we were unsure of the trail direction. More markers would be nice.

We hiked this trail a few years ago, but much earlier in the year. The scenery is breathtaking, and never disappoints, but start early in the day. There were only a few other hikers when we started out, but by the time we hiked out in the afternoon, the trail and the creek were clogged with people who were there mainly for the swimming holes. It was difficult to traverse the trail and cross the creek where required.
I would recommend not only going earlier in the day, but also going in the spring or fall to avoid the hordes of people that descend upon Oak Creek Canyon in the summer.
