“Rustic and beautiful”
Reviewed October 14, 2013 via mobile

Tyler has created exactly the kind of place you would want to find on a remote beach. Basic but beautiful. Quiet in the dorms/rooms but as lively as you want to make it in the bar (you really can't hear it from the rooms!).

Guest kitchen facilities are two electric jobs but they do the job with storage boxes provided to keep your food safe. There is a great little bakery in town (fresh each day at 16:00!!) and shops that can provide the basics for cooking. If cooking ain't your thing Tyler's team do breakfast, lunch and dinner so don't worry!

The beach is lovely and great fun for surfing or body boarding and has some amazing subsets (obviously weather permitting!)

There are two AWESOME dogs here which you will love.

Tyler can help you arrange any and all activities you need - you just need to pin him down and get some details from him. This is my only (small) complaint as I felt some if the activities were slightly overpriced and exaggerated. But for the most part this is a great hostel on a very undeveloped beach.

You'll be amazed at the amount if driftwood this coast gets!!

A great experience and well worth the effort to get to.

Had a lovely week staying here. Tyler, the owner, has done a great job to try and make the hostel low impact. Eco toilets and recycling are provided to keep the beautiful surroundings as there are. He also runs a surf school for the local kids which is great to see.

The hostel is a cabana style place - the dorm is comfortable (absolutely perfect temperature for sleeping) though, of course, basic (remember where you are!).

The location is cracking - you go surfing and look back at the rain forest! Worth the effort to get there (we took the cargo boat... an adventure!).

Room Tip: If you're not on a budget the double rooms looked nice - the premium one would be worth the extr...

Great place to really relax and enjoy the beautiful location. The hostel is great and staff very friendly. Enjoyed several trips such as whale watching and water falls. The hostel has great bar which overlooks the beach and where you can relax in your hammock. Defenitely recommend it!

Stayed at the Humpback for just over a week and had a really good time. It's pretty much right on the beach, so from bed to 1st wave is about 10mins! Tyler is a good host and makes an effort to chat to everyone and make them feel comfortable, Jeff is a laugh and has heaps of enthusiasm for pretty much everything.
For a beach hostel the facilities are good, but don't expect luxury. Is about 30-40mins walk from the town, so not too bad for groceries and other supplies.
They can organise excursions for the national park, fishing and whale watching. You can also rent surfboards if you left yours at home. Would recommend!

This place was absolutely amazing. The nature, the wildlife, the sea the surf and the people are incredible in el Valle and surrounding Chocó area. It is my favourite spot in Colombia so far and that says a lot if you would know how much i love Colombia in general. Apart from all that the Humpback Turtle is a gem on its own right in the middle of that impressive landscape. Beautiful bungalows in the middle of palm trees and all kind of plants. The owner has his own organic garden and is an excellent chef cooking lots of asian type fusion kitchen. I went there for surfing and the waves are right in front of the hostal and the wave is not crowded at all so great.
Owner Tyler and the rest of the staff are all really nice, cool, genuine people. In short I had a blast . Sorry if all that sounds a bit too good to be true, its just like that :D The only thing is as its a remote place and the next cash machine is 30 min drive away bring enough cash if you don´t want to go back and forth too much.
