With brevity in mind, here's the good & the bad
Good
-service: great service received from room, front desk & pool attendants. I asked for extra bottles of water & within a couple of minutes, the room attendant comes back with four.
-property: (probably it’s biggest strength) expansive, beautiful walking trail in the cactus garden & other areas of the property & easy hiking on Camelback Mountain. Less than a 5-minute drive to Scottsdale Mall.
-golf course: great layout – 27 holes; both traditional & desert style courses
-gym: not bad for a resort course; all the equipment that I worked out with were relatively new; adequate selection of cardio equipment
-rooms: beautifully appointed especially the bathrooms

Bad
-pool area: the hotel had a high occupancy & it was tough to get a free spot if you come in after 10AM. Some guests were playing the “towel” game i.e. putting towels & other personal items to “reserve” the spot. There is a policy against this but it didn’t appear to be strictly enforced.
-room location: we were on the 4th floor facing the driveway & the balcony was covered with hedges, hence no view & all we heard were sounds.

Room Tip: Most floors from the 4th & higher would be great except for the rooms facing the driveway.

We just returned from an Anniversary Trip. We really struggled with selecting a place to stay, and find the right place for value, but still be nice for our trip.

I was hesitant at first to stay at Phoenecian. Although I had heard many good things, the cost was something to consider. However, we are really glad we paid a bit more and stayed here. The reservation manager, Tim Canosa, was very helpful. He helped us with a snag in our reservation, and was VERY professional and customer focused. He also welcomed us to our room with a wonderful bottle of Champagne for our anniversary - what a nice surprise.

Some things that jump out at me.

ALL the employees were very friendly, super helpful, and very cheerful. This is the sign of a well run resort.
Also, the pools are wonderful. My wife and I spent the most time at the lower pool, which was a bit more secluded. The Service at this pool was Amazing. Jeremy was awesome, and a wonderful young lady named Mandi (I think) was the same.
Drinks, food, water came out super fast.
Hiking Camelback Mountain was very convenient and awesome.
The patio restaurant was really a great place to hang out at night. Great views, fire pits, very relaxing.
The grounds were spectacular, and added to the experience.
Also, the resort is five minutes from Old Scottsdale, which was convenient to great restaurants, shopping, etc...
Spa - fantastic.
Service - any time someplace go busy with customers, whether at pool, front desk, restaurant, etc... it wasn't a minute before extra staff showed up and helped. This management of this hotel seems to have an awesome system for preventing any bad experience from surfacing for guests. This was very impressive, and made the experience awesome.

The other thing that was interesting is that there seemed to be a ton of kids at the resort during our stay, however, the resort is laid out so well, that you don't really feel like the kids were there, in the way, etc... Never noticed excessive noise, crowds, or anything like that, and there were hundreds of small children staying there at the time (Chicago schools were on Spring Break).

My wife and I are very frugal, so it was hard to justify spending more to stay at a high end resort, but Phoenician was WELL WORTH ever penny, we will stay there again without hesitation, and recommend it to anyone who asks.

A warning, my spelling stinks but it's a very knowledge review, I promise, so read on!

My husband and I were just there this past weekend to celebrate our 11th anniversary. All cards on the table, we did meet at the Phoenician and then got married there as well so it will always have a soft spot for us.

But here is why you cannot go wrong staying here:
The resort is beyond incredible looking. Make sure to bring your camera, you'll want to take a LOT of photos.

The rooms have anything you could ever need. Check that, they could use some black tea, all it had was decaf but I'm nitpicking. They even provide complimentary slippers and turndown service. And they sent a lovely champagne split for our anniversary, so sweet.

Our room overlooked the pool and were three balconies to the right from the thirsty camel lounge so in the evening we sat outside with a glass of wine and listed to the entertainment (a wonderful singer) without having to go to the bar.

There are sooooo many options for dining. We ate lunch at RELISH and I had the amazing Blu Burger. The tater tots are excellent as well.
We stopped at the Ice Cream Parlor for some of their signature Phoenician Crunch ice cream. It's some of the best ice cream I've ever had, don't miss it!

We had dinner at II Terazzo. We had the appitizer special, a mushroom rosotto filled fried balls (looked like meatballs) in a WONDERFUL red sauce. I then had the petite filet with a perfect bernaise and a side of sweet potoatoes, all excellent.
HOWEVER, my husband had the other steak and found it was not trimmed properly which dampened his enjoyment. The staff quickly offered us complimentary desserts to make up for it but we didn't have the room.

Breakfast was the buffet back at II Terazzo. It was excellent, highly recommended. Don't miss the crossanuts (sp) both regular and chocolate and you can build your own bagel and lox complete with red onion and capers, yum!

Re entertainment we played tennis twice. The courts were in excellent condition, and they provide towels and water, and if you need, raquetts and balls. The kids club is also right there, hummmm, maybe drop off the kiddos and play a couple of sets?

We also tourned the catus garden which is at the base of Camelback mountain, lovely.

The pool was quite crowded. We sat at the upper pool and were lucky to get two chairs together. Admittedly, we didn't arrive at the pool till about 1 in the afternoon. I'd recommend going earlier to stake out a good spot. It also did take awhile for the attendent to come by to take our drink order (I had a very potent rum and ginger based drink listed in their menu that was well worth the $9 price). But the pools are fantastic, perfect tempature and so beautiful.

There are many other things to do but as this was just a one night stay we didn't get to the spa, gym or golf.

Will we go back again? Just try to stop us!

Room Tip: Lobby floor, to the right as you enter the hotel as close to the lobby as you can. It's the perf...

Plan ahead for this destination, it is very popular for spring Break.'
This location is perfectly located for enjoying what Scottsdale , AZ
has to offer. Great shopping, great restaurants and wonderful views during a hike.
Ask about room location when you book, some rooms may seem more
romantic because there are at the base of the moutain, other rooms provide
breath taking views both are special but you may want to select your experience.
The free tea and coffee service is nice. Overall this place provides a taste of luxury
desert vacation. I would recommend off season to get both a great deal and a relaxing
pace with unbelieveable service.

Room Tip: Ask which rooms offer the best views or which are on the mountain

This was a girls trip. I've had the great fortune to travel with the same 4 women for the last 20 years. We have been a lot of different places but had never been to Scottsdale. What a treat it is to stay at a place that understands what customer service is all about. This is a large property, that can sometimes mean that the people who work there are on "auto pilot" Not the case at the Phoenician. From the moment we arrived at the main desk, to the wait staff at Relish to our friends Steve and Sam at the Oasis we were treated like queens. (We actually think we are queens) The room service was spectacular...one evening we decided to have dinner on our balcony and asked them for candles...they found some and rushed them right over. Its that kind of customer service that doesnt show up as often as it should in these 5 star hotels.

We ate one night at the J & G Steakhouse which is on the property. What a great experience. Make reservations before you travel to be sure that you can get in and then request a table outside. The view is stunning and the food fantastic.

We stayed in the casitas which was very nice as that allowed us to be near the pool area. We found the pool at the bottom to be a little quieter (less kids) and we had chairs that looked out on to the pond that is there...very nice! Another great little extra is that they brought around pitchers of water for each group so that you always had water. Our water pitchers were replaced 5 or 6 times in a day so you always had ice water which is just another example of the above and beyond this place turned out to be.

We travel to a lot of 5 star hotels and Starwood should really take a close look at the GM and staff for this hotel and make sure that all properties strive to be as excellent as the Phoenician. Thanks to the entire staff for making our trip memorable!

We came back because we enjoyed our trip so much last year. Nothing has really changed except they now offer free coffee/tea outside Il Terrazzo in the AM which is great. The pool service was a bit slower this year but the pool was packed everyday. I heard people complaining about not being able to hold chairs but I have always found this irritating when on vacation so I commend the Phoenician for their policy. We will probably be back next year!

I am a starwood Good member and usually stay at an SPG property. We along with three other families came here for spring break. We have grown up kids so typically rent two rooms. we paid 1500 per room for a total of three nights ( so a total of 3000 for the two rooms). One of the rooms bathroom stinks, after a shower, like sewage.

Second, while we rented the two rooms, we found that you could rent a large (1400 sq ft) 1 bedroom suite for approx $2100 for the same duration. Save urself the money!!

Additionally, the service is not all that great...for breakfast, they bring you a tea cup without a teaspoon, do not deliver the newspapers, etc. do not come hear for spring break and just check out the room and suite prices....the vacation, so far, has been a real disappointment.

Room Tip: Check the value of suites and confirm that you can get roll away beds.

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We are deeply disappointed to learn that your vacation did not meet your expectations. Depending upon the size of your party, and your preferences in regards to accommodations, The Phoenician presents a diverse offering -- from guestrooms in the center of it all in the main building to the more residential feel of the casitas, featuring doorstep parking. During the peak spring break season, roll-away beds do tend to be in high demand. Unfortunately, we did have an issue with a section of piping in the guestroom area, which was corrected immediately. Service is the cornerstone of The Phoenician's AAA Five Diamond culture, with ongoing training provided for all associates. Your concerns have been shared with management and will be addressed to ensure our commitment is not compromised.
