“very good value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2014

We stayed here two night and were very impressed by the service, they had happy hour on our second night, which was a friday, from 5.30 to 7.00 which was free wine, beer and soda with nachos which was a lovely start to our evening. We would recommend to eat at Oreganos across the road the food was amazing and the services was very good.

This is a clean, convenient and comfortable hotel in a town filled with expensive resorts and spas. We were in town for a wedding weekend. The wedding party stayed at the resort. We used the resort amenities and saved 200 a night by staying five miles down the road.

We were last at this hotel in April 2012 and decided to stay again this April when we visited Scottsdale for some spring sun. This hotel suits our needs perfectly the layout of the suites giving us some extra space, the complimentary breakfast setting us up for the day, a pool to spend a bit of down time beside and a shuttle to drop us off if we don't want to drive. But the main attraction of this hotel is its staff - they are unfailingly helpful, cheerful and a pleasure to deal with, they are happy to help with any queries that are put to them. The location is great for accessing all the attractions of Old Town Scottsdale and we will be back again for a few more nights before our return to Scotland.

We stayed in a 2 Queen Suite for 3 nights in March of 2014 for a rate range of $160 - $200 a night. Overall it's an excellent hotel, it just didn't fit our needs at the time.

Positives:
- Easy Check-In - We were early by two hours and our room was ready. Check- in took less than 5 minutes and the rate and room were correct. Dionte the Guest Care Manager was friendly and gave a great orientation (time of breakfast and best way to get to our room).
- Requests Were Granted - We requested a high floor, quiet room with a crib for our toddler. All three were granted, as we were on the the third floor in the second to the last room on the corner with the crib being delivered within 30 minutes after we for into our room.
- Crib - They provided a rolling "crib hybrid." It was smaller than a real crib but had the bars of a crib so definitely not a Pack and Play.
- Location - The hotel is a 6-12 minute walk from Scottsdale Stadium/Civic Center/Center for Performing Arts. Since our main purpose of the trip was to watch Spring Training games at the stadium, this was ideal. It was also an 8-15 minutes walk to Old Town and 1 block away from the closest supermarket (Albertsons).
- Amenities - I am a sucker for the cinnamon rolls and having one of those prior to going out for breakfast kept me from getting cranky while my family decided where to go. We also didn't have to take the time to go out and get toothpaste and shaving cream (which we forgot) as they have those along with combs, razors and toothbrushes at the front desk for no additional cost.
- All Suite Hotel - This is a mixed subject (see below) but for the most part we chose this hotel because all the rooms have a separate bedroom and living room, separated by wall and door.
- Staff - I can't say enough good things about the staff. From Dionte and the front desk staff, to the cleaning staff and the maintenance workers, all of them always greeted us when we passed by them. The cleaning staff would let us go on the elevator ahead of themselves and while waiting for the elevator to come, they'd wave and smile to my toddler. They were helpful, except for 1 miscommunication (see below).
- Free Parking - With other hotels in the area charging a parking fee or hiding the parking fee in the resort fee, this was a nice plus. And we didn't have any problems, meaning there were plenty of spots available, plenty of room in each spot for a large crossover vehicle and close proximity to the rooms.
- Shuttle - We didn't use it but the free shuttle within 3 miles of the hotel and a $10/person/ride to the airport was a good option.
- Quiet Rooms - We didn't have anyone above us and we didn't hear the neighbor next door. This was fantastic for our toddler because he's a light sleeper. Also note, we've stayed at the nearby best western sundial on a Friday night and you could hear the club music/bar noise across the street. And even worse was Hotel Indigo Scottsdale where one Saturday night, there were party groups running down the halls knocking on other guests' doors and cursing at the top of their lungs, playing loud music until 3 am.
- Non-smoking hotel - This is a must for us with a little toddler. There are smoking areas outside of the side entrances which would affect the rooms around those areas that had their air conditioners close by, but our room was 3 windows away and 3 stories high and so we weren't affected by any smoke.

Issues For Us, But May Not Be For Others
- No Total Privacy - The big reason why we needed the suite in the first place was because our toddler goes to sleep at 9:00 pm. So we needed the separate living room to be able to keep the lights on and make noise as we prepared for bed and prepared for the next day. But, first of all, we couldn't put him in the bedroom because the air conditioning was located in the bedroom so the toddler would be freezing in the bedroom or we would be burning in the living room. Also the door between the living room and bedroom had a huge glass window and no blinds. It was pretty much a window regarding light. So we had to drape a blanket over the door, which blocked off the light but caused another problem. We couldn't close the door all the way. Therefore he was able to hear us walk around in the bedroom. Also because the air conditioning was in the bedroom, there was a 2x3 hole above the bedroom door with a grill so that the air could travel to the living room. Again, noise would be able to travel. Finally, the layout of the suite was this: front door, bathroom/faucet, living room, bedroom door and then the bedroom. What this meant for us was that once our toddler went to sleep in the living room, we couldn't leave the bedroom for anything without waking up our toddler. We couldn't go to the bathroom, shower, go outside for one of us to get ice. Nothing.
- Small Size of the Suite - For us it just felt like a normal sized room with a door in between the bed and the couch area.
- Temperature control - The air conditioning unit is located in the bedroom and no vents in the living room (thus the 2x3 hole in the wall with a grill above the bedroom door).
- House Keeping on the first day - After I had talked to what I believe was the house keeping coordinator and after she told her group of 3-4 not to clean our room, a different house keeping staff member came into our room while our toddler was sleeping. After that day, I just put the do not disturb sign up and it did the trick.

Overall this is a well run hotel that I would recommend to anyone, except for those that might take issue with the issues I listed above. Happy travels!

Breakfast was good, certainly better than most hotels in this category, but not gourmet. The cinnamon rolls were a nice touch and very tasty. Selection of yogurt and oatmeal left something to be desired (both sweetened -- I don't understand why, as anyone can *add* sugar or honey, but you can't take it out).

Rooms were nice and large (suites) and well appointed. Cleaning staff did a good job, but didn't replace the coffee and had to be called in. The person above us stomped around like a herd of elephants; don't know that much could be done about that, other than putting up signs: "Be considerate -- your loud feet can wake up the people beneath you."

Room Tip: Top floor won't have people stomping over you at all hours.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2014

I recently spent the first and last nights of a week-long Sonoran Desert hiking trip at this Holiday Inn Express (HIE).

This HIE is a 3-story hotel structure shaped more or less like a V with the swimming pool in open space between the 2 arms of the V. All 2nd and 3rd floor rooms are accessed via an elevator just off the spacious lobby. Stairs, of course, are also available.

I was in 302 the first night and 301 the second. Both were king suites and exactly the same except that 302 is an end unit with windows on 2 walls, whereas 301 accross the hall only has a window on 1 wall. The king suites were very comfortable and well appointed.

Closest to the entry door are the wet areas - a large lav top outside the bathroom and a bathroom containing the tub/shower combo and toilet. The tub/shower combo it the typical HIE 1-piece plastic unit with a curved shower rod. The towels and washcloths were soft and plush, and did not smell of pool water. I did find the water pressure a bit weak and I don't like the showerhead that HIE's use, but it was adequate.

The sitting area contained a couch and arm chair, a desk and desk chair, 2 end tables, a wall unit with storage that also contained a small microwave and refrig, a coffee maker with cheap coffee supplies, and had a large flat panel TV sitting on top.

The bedroom could be closed off from the sitting area with glass doors. It contained a king bed, 2 night stands with lamps, and a large dresser with another flat panel TV on top.

There were 2 closets in the room - a large closet with a mirrored door near the wet areas and a small open one in the bedroom. There was no safe in either closet.

Both rooms were well lighted. There were also a total of 7 charging stations in the bases of 4 table lamps in the room.

The breakfast area was large and the typical included HIE breakfast was good. Every evening except Sunday they have a happy hour with limited choices of snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine. It is not very high end, but it is free.

I did not use the pool or exercise room, but both looked nice. The pool area is especially large for a HIE. There is a small, 2 station business center with wired Internet access in the lobby just off the breakfast area. Good, strong and free WiFi is available throughout the hotel.

Within very easy walking distance is an Oregano's, Denny's, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, the Scottsdale Art's District, the Old Town Civic Center, and other local restaurants.

Overall I was comfortable here and would stay here again. The only nit I have to pick is that this HIE charges $10 for each airport shuttle trip. But, since I was not aware of this when I prepaid both reservations some months ago, they did waived it for both uses. It probably helped that I have been a Priority Club member for 30+ years. And I am sure it is considerably less than cab fare if one does have to pay it.

Good hotel just south of Scottsdale Old Town. Hotel is simple but with large rooms and all the services you may need. Breakfast is also simple, served on plastic, but again good and including all the options you would usually need. Staff friendly. Efficient and affordable hotel option if you pass through Scottsdale.
