I've heard about CPH for awhile and after reading all the positive reviews we decided to give it a try. It's located just off 5th Ave. in Old Town Scottsdale, the entrance being on Craftsman. It was early on a Weds. evening, and not crowded. We had a reservation and were immediately seated at a corner booth, where we had a great view of the whole restaurant. The Citizen Social Hour was in full swing; they have some great deals such as half-price draft beers and wines-by-the-glass as well as half-price bar snacks. We ordered a beer and a glass of prosecco, but passed on the tempting bar snacks. We decided to split an heirloom tomato salad that wasn't on the menu. It was delicious, consisting of small yellow and red tomatoes, field greens, goat cheese and cashews with a balsamic vinaigrette. My husband chose the scallop entree, and practically inhaled it. He said the scallops (there were 3, served on a small bed of grits and a few sprigs of broccolini) were the best he's ever had, anywhere. On the strong recommendation of our waiter, I chose the short rib entree. It came with pureed parsnip and lightly sauteed kale. This entree is in my estimation quite overpriced at $30, as you get exactly one short rib, 50% of which is bone, fat, and gristle. The small side of cherry barbecue sauce was kind of a non-factor: a bit too sweet and fruity. If you're in the mood for beef, it would make more sense to spring for the filet mignon for only $2 more. We chose to split an unusual bread pudding for dessert. It was dense, dark, and garnished with a tiny scoop of ice cream and candied tortilla chips. Hubby didn't care for it. I thought it was good, but again, not $10-worth-good. ($6 maybe, or even $7, tops.)
We found the service at CPH to be top-notch and attentive. The "Social Hour" has some really good food and drink deals. The food is flavorful, serving sizes are not overly generous, some items seem oddly overpriced. The bottom line is that we will definitely go back as we both saw other things on the menu we'd like to try, and the restaurant over all has a congenial, comfortable, upbeat atmosphere and an uncomplicated menu.
