“It's Nice, But It Could Be Better”
Reviewed June 9, 2014

Overall a nice place, but....

The rooms had paper thin doors, so when all the drunks get done a night of boozing and gambling at the casino you're in for a real treat. Some amateur girl was totally hammered and decided to roam the hallways for two hours making noise from 1-3am. I finally called security and they did shut her up. Plus you just hear all the hallway noise from your own room. It reminded me of a dorm in that sense. The rooms are nice, but the carpets are a bit damaged and the rooms could be a bit cleaner (dusting isn't on their checklist).

The positives are the rooms are nice, the casino is nice, the restaurants are ok, the views are pretty, the location is very good, and the pool is nice (although don't expect prompt service).

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a mountain view.

We didn't stay at the resort. We were there for Rob Thomas Concert. We went to rooftop restaurant for food and drink. The appetizers were excellent . The bottle of wine was also very tasty. This restaurant has the most beautiful views of the surrounding mountain ranges. This is a great place to go for a date night.

This is thw second time i have been there and this is my second major complaint. Once again the customer service is unacceptable! I was repeatedly talked back to, and when i told the management, absolutely nothing was said, no apology to me for their employees actions and nothing was said to the employee. I will never go back!

A nice hotel is losing people fast. We had 7 girls there for a girls day and night out. The new pool party has many issues. The servers were far and few between and one drink would take an average of 20 minutes to get. It is also the only pool so if you don't want to be around a lot of loud music and drunk party goers you do not have another option. Orange Sky has great food but the service there was also extremely poor. Then there is the night club, again the absolute poorest service, too small, TERRIBLE bartenders, not friendly and actually mean, different DJ's that actually played the same songs over in a short time period, and could care less what people wanted to hear, and then there is the "security". If you fall down in the night club, not to mention it was because of tripping over a low roped off area, whether or not you are drinking, you have to leave, even if you offer to do a breathalyzer to prove you have been drinking water for the last 3-4 hours, you have to leave, you are either escorted out to a limo and placed in your car and the limo driver will not take you anywhere near the hotel, or you are followed to your room and told "Do not come out till it's daylight" or you will be trespassing and taken to jail. Really? REALLY? Would NOT recommend this place to anyone, and make sure if you do visit this place, don't fall down. They get very mean.

Room Tip: Don't even bother going

My wife and I were vacationing from Ohio to the Scottsdale area for a week and decided to choose this hotel. First off, I must say it is very well decorated, clean, and modern. The first room we had the toilet wouldn't flush. We called the maintenance guy up and he plunged the toilet for us. Still did not flush. I went down to the front desk the next morning and they changed our room with no issues and sent someone up to help us with our bags. The location is great, right off the 101 but out of the way from all the traffic. Right up the road there are lots of stores and restaurants. The casino is nice and the dealers were very friendly. The buffet and restaurants were decently priced with delicious food. It was a little bit of a hassle to get from the parking garage to the room. As others have mentioned, you have to journey through the casino to check in and then down the hall to the elevators on the other side. No big deal, though. The only part of the hotel/casino that is smoking is the casino. I don't believe the casino is as smokey as others made it out to be. My wife is not a smoker and was not bothered at all by it. All in all a great experience and beautiful hotel. Will definitely stay here next time we are in the area!

Judging from other Tripadvisor reviews, Talking Stick is a YMMV establishment. My stay was acceptable, with some drawbacks that could be mitigated by the guest.

Location: On native lands with convenient access to main roads, a drive from old town Scottsdale. This is a self-contained resort in the middle of a sea of parking lots well away from other attractions.
Advice: If you are coming in from the airport, rent a car instead of using a taxi. You will want to be able to come and go and you will need wheels to do so.

Rooms: My standard room on 10th floor room was large, clean and well equipped. View of the pool and distant mountains, reasonably sound proof. Folks just down the hall were raucous and consumed an astonishing quantity of beer. I heard them in the hallway but not in my room. Comfortable beds, large flat screen, very nice bathroom with tub and separate shower, coffee maker, ironing board etc. Free wifi in the room worked well. A friend splurged on an upgrade with balcony and was happy.
Advice: Request an upper floor room. Bring an extension cord if you want to sit away from the desk with your laptop -- outlets were scarce.

Layout: As others have noted, the smoke filled casino is unavoidable. Needed to walk through the smoke filled casino to get from parking garage to check in desk to hotel elevators to conference venues. Security was reasonably good -- folks checked for card keys on entry from the casino to the hotel tower. Walks were pretty long from parking to get to desk and rooms.
Advice: Park in the free garage and not in the free parking lots. Closer. Much cooler on shaded lower levels.
Advice: On entry, ask staff for directions to the hotel front desk or look for directional signs. Casinos are designed to be confusing.

Food: The food at the snack bars and banquet fare was usually acceptable but not great. Clams and shrimp were overcooked, mussel was bad. Chicken was a tough and too salty. Beer priced at 5 to 6 bucks per serving. Wine and cocktails much higher.
Advice: Do not dine on seafood in Arizona. Kitchen staff should take greater care sorting mussels before cooking (cull the open mussels).
Advice: If you are staying in the hotel, bring in beer and wine and save a bundle.

Staff: Pleasant and efficient, from check in to housekeeping.

Resort Amenities: Casino odds do not favor the customer. I am not a gambler and the smoke filled rooms were not very appealing. There was a non-smoking blackjack room. Did not have time to check out shows. Wandered into the cigar lounge with live entertainment and it seemed comfortable if you like cigars and light jazz on piano. Pools looked very pleasant.

Conference Facilities: Meeting venues for plenary sessions and breakouts were fine. In a quiet separate wing.

Once we navigated the massive parking lots and left our car momentarily with the valet and registered, we were directed to our room: go back to the main entrance, follow the main aisle through the casino to the bar, bear left and follow the hall to the hotel lobby where you will find the elevators. We asked the attendant in the hotel lobby if we could park closer or enter the hotel without passing through the casino. The answer is no. That to me was a big turn off. The room itself was well-appointed and quite comfortable. I suppose if you were coming to gamble and needed a place to stay, this works. But if you are just looking for a room for the night, this is not the spot.
