“Excellent room and room service”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

Stayed at the resort due to location near Salt River Fields (attended concert and didn't want to drink and drive 35 miles home). Excellent room on the first floor, very spacious. Room service food was really good, much better than typical room service. Very clean, all in all an excellent stay. Would absolutely "stay-cation" here again!

Room Tip: 1st floor!

Our primary purpose for the visit to Talking Stick was to attend the Happy Together concert. We're not into the gambling. We were impressed by the quality of the resort. Hate the smoking but that's typical for a casino. Our room was beautiful. Very roomy, great bathroom/shower. Surprisingly quiet given the crowd that was there. Hard to comment objectively on the pool scene because they were having a Saturday event and there were hundreds of younger folks at the pool and lots and lots of drinking going on in, around and outside the pool. Wouldn't want to have been in there for any amount of money!! We would probably go again but not on a weekend.

Room Tip: We stayed on the first floor in an upgraded room. It was quiet enough for us.

In June, we attended a most uncomfortable private celebration dinner on the roof top terrace of the Orange Sky Restaurant at Talking Stick Resort. We were looking forward to what we anticipated would be an upscale, lovely evening. From the beginning, all us guests were shocked to find NO misters, NO ceiling fans, NO blinds as the sun pelted on us. It was far too hot to eat the passed hor's d oeuvres, and we were unaware that part of our $312. per couple bill (that's right) included almost $29 per person for those precious little snacks. Oh, and bar drinks and wines were extra. The ho-hum dinner included a cream corn soup that was completely inappropriate for the heat, with a niggardly toss of corn kernels and a bacon bit in the bottom of the bowl. The meats offered for the main course were tough and primarily tasted about the same. These were accompanied by a glop of mashed potatoes (whooo knock yourselves out)!!! and a spoonful of grilled summer squash- repeat -knock yourselves out!!! The dessert was a banana caramel tart consisting of a 2000 year old hockey puck masquerading as a pastry shell. One bite of that sucker would have sent it either flying across the room to knock out an innocent bystander or send the diner to the dentist for caps. Great confusion ensured about the presentation of the bill. Apparently there was a real disconnect between the management and the planner, as the bill was given to him instead of being billed to the diners' rooms, as he had been previously arranged. The best laid plans can often fall to the inept for "execution". That disconnect announced itself from the get-go, as the management had even gotten the honoree's name wrong on the menu cards. And to sort out the re-billing of the exhorbitant bills to our rooms took about 45 minutes, all in the unbearable heat. Add insult to injury please. Oh, make that a double. When I called the manager several days later to voice my concerns, he repeatedly blamed our out-of-town planner. Even the below average food and the artless and unimaginative presentation and the inedible dessert that came out of the manager's kitchen; the high cost for this dinner; the uncomfortable environment without misters or fans were all in the manager's environment- yet, he repeatedly blamed our friend for "his choices". When I asked for some consideration on the bill for the lack of quality received, the manager said he'd get back to me. That was over 2 weeks ago, without any return call. Obviously the restaurant manager has little regard for quality of product and diner experience. We had hoped this would be a place to take our numerous out of town guests, but there is no way we'd return to Orange Sky. The hotel was quite nice and we enjoyed the room. But if you have any taste buds, any desire to receive any value for your money and are planning a special event, my recommendation is to look at other options. In other words, in my opinion, Orange Sky is a real lemon.

I stayed at this hotel for the first time on the 4th of July weekend. No resort fees and free valet, which is really nice. The rooms were very clean and comfortable (But the sheets are loud, any movement from your partner and they will wake you up). Before I booked this hotel I read the previous reviews and looked at the pictures. The rooms are true to the other reviewers pictures. In past reviews I saw how the smoke bothered other guests. I am not a smoker and hate smoke. I was not bothered by the smoke in the casino at all since you have to walk throught the casino to get to your room. We did have an incident with other hotel guests smoking on our floor (which is not permitted). The smokers were told numerous times to not smoke in the hotel tower, and eventually were kicked out of the hotel. I was grateful for that because the smoke was overwhelming. We ate at Orange Sky which is on the top floor of the hotel. The food, staff and view were amazing. We also ate at the Wandering Horse buffet, I am not a huge buffet person, but this buffet was really good. A lot of food choices and everything was fresh. We went down to the pool twice. Each time we did not have a problem finding chairs, but we did go around 10 in the morning. The pool water was not hot, seems like they pump cool water into it. The staff at the pool are very eager to serve you and are very social. They do have a pool party on saturdays which gets pretty loud. We had a room on the pool side and could hear music for the entire party. Dont try to take a nap during that time if you are overlooking the pool. I would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I have stayed here before and, although we only live 10 minutes away, it is one of our favorite places. We come here every July 3rd to dine and stay over to watch from our room the fireworks display from the nearby Salt River Field. Dining ranges from a Five Star restaurant (the fabulous Orange Sky on the 15th floor), to casual dining and a wonderful buffet. There are several bars scattered about, family pools and adult only pools, fitness center, spa and massage center, well appointed rooms with gorgeous mountain views and as fine a gaming room as you will find anywhere. Courtesy buses are available for shopping excursions at nearby shopping malls. As I said, Talking Stick has it all.

Room Tip: West side for fireworks, otherwise the higher the better for views.

1st visit to hotel. Spent one night "staycation" to enjoy the pool and facilities. Checked in around 3 p.m. Room was not ready and front desk said they would call us. Checked our bags with Bell Desk and headed for pool. Roughly 5 minutes later our phone rang and the we were told our room was now ready? Huh? We were just there. Decided to go and get settled so we walked back inside, got our bags and checked into to room 3233 on Club Level C1. Rooms are nicely appointed and modern. King size bed was comfortable. Great stand up shower with rain head that delivered on pressure and temperature as needed. Floor to ceiling windows with plantation shutters are a nice touch but not great for keeping light out in the morning. While the room appeared to be clean, we did find quite a bit of hair in the bathroom and on the furniture so it made us wonder just how well it had been done.

The view of the pool from our room and the overly-intoxicated twenty-something's we encountered on the way, were enough of a sign for us to stay away. The water looked cloudy and the pool was packed with partiers who were there for the Summer weekend events. We also learned that all of the bars pour one ounce shots in their drinks and the prices are compatible with what you pay for a normal shot elsewhere. ($18 for two drinks)

After exploring the hotel for a bit, we went to the Club Lounge on the top floor for drinks and appetizers. About 30 minutes after providing our room number, we were told that we did not have access to the lounge and would have to pay if we wanted to stay. So.... I have a Club Level room but it doesn't include the Club Lounge? Nope - we were on level C1 and the lounge is only for level C2. In order to avoid any further embarrassment, we paid the $50 and went on about our conversation. 1st time we have ever paid for lounge access while on a club floor.

Had dinner at the rooftop restaurant and was pleasantly surprised with the food and service. Had low expectations going in and they delivered over and above. It was odd however that they told us they could seat us immediately downstairs and then told us to wait at the bar upstairs. 15 minutes and $60 in drinks later, we were seated in a virtually empty restaurant. Perhaps the waiting game is designed to encourage tips and spending while waiting?

After dinner we went to the nightclub and found a very mixed and somewhat seedy group in attendance. There was an armed Scottsdale police officer INSIDE the nightclub. First time we have ever seen this at a club. The fact that they need police on site was disturbing enough but when I was sprayed with half a drink that was thrown by two fighting females a few feet away from us, we knew it was time to go. Spent a bit more time in the lounge on the casino level listening to music but the crowd was more of the same so we decided to call it a night.

Unfortunately, this is right on par with our other experiences at gaming establishments in AZ and CA. If you taper your expectations accordingly, it would be fine for a night or two, assuming that you are there to gamble. Aside from that, there is not much being offered.

Final note - most of staff we came in contact with was friendly and accommodating.

Love Scottsdale, so we decided to take a long weekend there over the 4th. I found Talking Stick and got a great deal on airfare, rental car and hotel.
We arrived in Phoenix on the 4th around 9:30 and I had called earlier in the week to see if they could give us an early checkin, they said that they would try. When we got there, no problem, checked right in. Went to our room and it was very nice, king size bed overlooking the courtyard/pool. We decided to head to the pool for a while after we had lunch at the Blue Coyote (a 24 hour grill in the resort) they were having a party open to the public, kind of frustrating because the chairs were basically all full but some young guys gave up two for us. It wasn't horrible but I would have rather had a relaxing, quiet time with some cocktails and sun.
Friday my guy golfed at the talking stick golf club, he said it was a great deal and a good course, the guys in the club house were awesome. I went to the pool, but no sun that day, it was quiet and relaxing, but I thought there is always tomorrow to catch some early rays. Oops, guess what? Another pool party, this one made Thursdays look like a small party, there were people everywhere...kind of frustrating for us since we were paying to be at the resort.
Honestly, everything was awesome, free Valet parking and free bottled water in your room, beds were great, we slept like babies BUT, the only reason we won't return is because of the pool parties.
I did hear mothers of children complaining of the smoke through the casino, (as I puffed away poolside, so I'm not opposed) but my opinion is, a casino/golf resort, is that really where you want to bring children for a getaway? I wouldn't think so, there is really nothing there for kids.
All in all, I would highly recommend this resort, but maybe not on the weekends if you plan any pool time.
