“Good choice for Scottsdale area/Spring Training Trip”
Reviewed April 2, 2009

Spent several days at this Hampton Inn and found it to be a good value. Very good continental breakfast and convenient to many spring training parks, the purpose of our visit to Arizona. I would recommend this Hampton Inn as all Hampton Inns are usually a pretty safe bet.

The Hampton Inn at Shea was a wonderful value. Clean, spacious rooms, and accommodating staff. The management had even set up a gift wrapping station. Had no problem getting a late check out and plenty of free parking. While the weather was too cold to use, it has a nice pool area. While the hotel is on a major street, it is set far enough back from the street and most of the rooms are situated such that you don't get traffic noise. Free business center with a printer and free local faxes.

The free breakfast was very decent including a hot entree. My only complaint is that everything used for breakfast was Styrofoam and plastic. There appeared to be no effort to recycle.

At $71 per night, the AAA rate, you couldn't do better.

This Hampton Inn is a somwehat below average and overpriced. That's an unfortunate combination.

This is a smaller Hampton Inn located well off the convenient freeway loop that encircles the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. It's approximately 27 miles from the Phoenix airport. The immediate surroundings have some convenience. There's a Macaroni Grill restaurant immediately next door, and a CVS pharmacy across the street (busy, so you'd want to drive not walk across). There's also a California Pizza Kitchen and a Mexican restaurant in the immediate area.

The hotel itself is showing age and is in need of remodeling to be in line with Hilton chain standards. It's a smallish property, two stories, with an open horseshoe design with a smaller, separate back building housing some rooms.

My first impression is that this property has some security concerns. Numerous signs in the parking lot as well as a sticker on the entrance door warn that parking (free) is at your own risk. I also noticed that by design there is a back way out of the parking lot, through the next door restaurant, and out a back road. Hotel staff cannot see this area; neither can they see the pool courtyard from their front desk position.

Upon entry for check-in, there was no one at the front desk; they were in the back room. I didn't see anyone around other than myself, no hotel employees or other guests, yet the hotel was fully booked according to the Hampton website. Check-in was quick. I did not receive my preference of a king, quiet room, but got a double queen facing the front, busy street. The room was nonsmoking as requested.

The hotel room was dated in design, but clean and acceptably appointed. Internet access is free in the room (wired). The bathroom was clean with an updated vanity. My part of the hotel did not have the updated Hampton beds being rolled out to their properties, although I saw inside the windows of some rooms that were updated. I had a problem with my hotel room card key access. This is a known problem by the front desk; many of the rooms have the door handles mounted upside down so you have to pull up instead of push down on the handle. Another person came down to the front desk with the same problem while I was talking to the hotel staff. The TV remote didn't work well, although I didn't report it. The TV reception and channel selection were mediocre but OK.

I used the exercise room which is better than average for a Hampton. The room contains one treadmill, one stepper, one rowing machine, two exercise bikes, and a universal gym.

The free breakfast is a bit worse than average but OK. The breakfast area is located next to the lobby and is smaller than average. The breakfast starts promptly at 6am, not before. I have found other Hamptons start putting their food out earlier. There was a group of people all who came down exactly at 6am to eat. I noticed that the guests were not primarily business people with their laptop computers. While I was waiting for breakfast to be put out, another hotel desk came down, was late meeting his coworker sitting at the next table to me, and complained to the front desk that they provided his wake up call one hour late ( I used the in-room alarm clock).

In the evening, the hot water and coffee had run out and were not refilled. This Hampton does not provide the free cookies; my experience is that fewer of the Hamptons are doing this these days.

One thing that caught my attention is that that guest laundry, usually barely used in a Hampton, was busy every evening until late at night. Perhaps, there are people living in this hotel longer term, I am not sure. It seems to fit with the clientele I saw at breakfast. I didn't see any families or retiress staying here.

I didn't use the business center or check it out.

Overall, for the price I don't think that this hotel is a great value. I stay in many Hamptons and by comparison this one is below average. However, it is still acceptable.

We stayed here recently for two nights Oct 14-Oct16, 2006 because we had to attend a wedding in Gainey Ranch Golf Club last Sunday. We contacted the property directly to book a room because of the group block rate of $69/night. The hotel was about 30 minutes away from Phoenix Int'l Airport. The taxi cab ride to the hotel was about $45. The price was pretty affordable and it is a decent hotel. The room was clean. TV was good. The swimming pool in the courtyard was very clean. They also had a spa/jacuzzi. There weren't a lot of people so I was able to enjoy some quiet/peace time. We didn't have any problems with other guests in rooms nearby being noisy. Their continental breakfast was pretty good. They offered, muffins, biscuits, sausage, eggs, juices, cereals, fresh fruits, coffee, bagels, toast, etc. They even offered 'on-the-run' breakfast bags if you don't have the time to stop by the lobby area to grab breakfast. Another plus, offered by the hotel is the free shuttle anywhere within 5 miles radius of the hotel. This helped us a lot because the Golf club where the wedding took place was only about 1 mile away but not walking distance. We didn't rent a car so they gave us a ride to the Gainey Ranch Golf Club. Their shuttle service has service hours so be sure to check them. They are very accommodating. We requested for a scheduled car service and they arranged it for us because we needed it for the return to Phoenix Int'l Airport. The car service cost us only $30.

Only one negative in our specific room was that the faucet in the bathroom when turned on, instead of letting water flow freely/nicely. It would kinda squirt. So you had to turn it down enough so that your shirt doesn't get wet. This problem we had probably doesn't apply to all the rooms.

Overall it was a good experience and worth the price.

The breakfasts used to be better; they used to serve fresh fruit. Now the fruit is still frozen in the morning and tastes like it is about 2 weeks old.

If you don't mind not being woke up at your designated time.
If you don't mind having a blurry television reception.
If you don't mind not being able to rent Pay-4-View movies.
If you don't mind not being able to correct your bill at checkout time.

Then Hampton Inn Scottsdale at Shea Avenue would be the place for you.
