I had an early dinner with friends a few nights ago (June 28, 2012) and we all ordered the "2 dinners for $25" special. You get a choice of 5 entrees---prime rib, a chicken dish, grilled salmon, a pasta dish, and a shrimp dish, if memory serves me. The salmon was perfection---moist on the inside, and not dried out like so many salmon dishes. The caesar salad was maybe a bit heavy on the dressing, but flavorful and crisp on a hot summer evening. The vegetables were lightly steamed. A yummy flan with a raspberry sauce completed the meal. The ambiance was perfect for our group of 5---not too noisy, but pleasantly busy. I've read some of the negative reviews. Perhaps the kitchen staff has improved their culinary skills. Overall I would recommend Agave for a better than average dinner at very reasonable prices.

We've gone to the Agave for lunch or dinner about 40-50 times over the last six years since we moved to Green Valley, AZ, and we've always looked forward to the summer specials. What a huge disappointment last night was!

The summer menus have completely changed, and the quality has gone way downhill. We used to look forward to their generous servings on prime rib night, accompanied by their outstanding Agave salad. Previously, eight summer menu specials rotated during the week, so one special was featured each night. This summer, they are offering a choice of four "Sunset Specials" each night, at $25 for two people, including a salad, main course, and a "Chef's choice dessert." This would have been an excellent value had the food been good. It was not. Your alternative to ordering the specials is to order from the regular menu, but we all agreed that the prices were substantially higher than last year.

When we arrived last night, we were informed that the new policy is that one cannot order any of the specials without a Casino Player's Club Card, which means if you're traveling through the area and stop to dine here, you'll be brought the regular and special menus, only to be informed that you cannot order from the special menu without the Card. Since we'd recommended the Agave to our friends, we were very embarrassed that our husbands had to go to an office outside of the restaurant and wait in line to apply for a Player's Club Card in order to get the $25 specials for two people. We complained to the waitress, who apologized and said everyone she waited on was unhappy about this new requirement. (None of us even gamble, so why the required card?)

As for the dinner, the Agave salad was not included in the specials, but one could chose between two very pedestrian offerings. One salad came with no dressing, and it took some time to get some. The prime rib, which we'd all ordered medium rare, came raw and sliced so thinly that it was almost translucent. The dessert tasted like cardboard, so none of us finished it, and no one could identify it.

Our friends then informed us that they'd heard quite negative reports from others who had dined at the Agave recently and thought that this might be the result of a change in management. We wished they had told us this when we made the recommendation and then the reservation, but they were very gracious about the disappointing experience.

While ususally fans of this local spot, we had a ghastly meal on 6/2/12. We ordered the prime rib special, medium rare and it was served raw, sitting in a pool of cool blood. The waitress took it back and returned with slices of grey, tough meat. The caesar salad, usually very good, was bland and non-descript. The dessert was cardboard strawberry shortbread filled with jam and cool whip. All this for $25! Aren't we lucky?

The buffett here is quite good alot of items including crab legs and shrimp. The only issue here is that the carved beef is amost always tough. in approx 10-15 visits we get 1 or 2 times when it is tender. still, the ballance offerings are worth it.

I don't think we have ever had a bad lunch or dinner at this eatery. They have great specials and when you ask for something they will usually get it for you. Great place to meet friends for lunch.
