“Scenic daytrip from Phoenix”
Reviewed November 29, 2013

Watson Lake is an easy daytrip from Phoenix when you need a quick nature fix. A system of trails create a 4.7-mile loop around the lake, incorporating something for everyone: a wide, flat pathway on the east side for jogging and biking, a riparian area on the south end with trees and marshes, and the rugged granite boulders on the north side (the granite Dells) for gorgeous views of the lake and rock outcrops. If you don't have time for the entire loop, take in at least the Lakeshore Trail offshoot from the main pathway on the east side. It delivers a good range of vistas including easier pathways through some boulders. My visit in early November offered some fall color, but it was the dry season and the surrounding hills and grasslands were brown. Will be interesting to visit again after winter rains. Watson and its neighbor Willow Lakes are part of Audubon's Important Bird program since they provide rest stops for summer and winter migratory birds. A detailed map was available (free) at the trailhead off the parking area near the dock. There is a small admission fee to enter the park. Restrooms and picnic ramadas are available, and canoeing/kayaking on the lake are popular.

“Unusual and interesting geology”
Reviewed November 25, 2013 via mobile

Prescott, AZ has a scenic geological attraction that locals call "The Dells", that partially "frame" Watson Lake. There are numerous opportunities to photograph the lake and the Dells from different directions, to climb up or down the Dells, or to just use the lake for boating. Other great views of Watson Lake can be had from the scenic Peavine Trail which used to be a railroad track, from a route 89 pullout, or from a small park which let's you look down on lake ( and is a perfect photography spot) and where you can bring a picnic lunch. The lake is temporary home to many birds, and eagles can sometimes be seen there. In Spring (and sometimes Fall) a profusion of wild flowers can often be seen around the lake. Watson Lake's and the Dells' beauty are not widely known outside Arizona and are an essential stop for anyone who passes through Prescott and appreciates nature's beauty.

“Really worth the visit”
Reviewed November 16, 2013

The rock formations around the lake are awesome and there are a couple of nice hikes as well. There is no admission fee on Wednesdays. I could easily have stayed longer than the 2 hours I spent there so I'll probably be back when I am in the neighborhood.
