This place is off the beaten path just a bit. About 1/2 mile or so south on Montezuma from historic Whiskey Row but well worth the short drive. This is a small "hole in the wall" place owned and run by Rosa; her husband is the cook. They have the best pork carnitas of any place around. And, this place is "cabaret style"; that is bring your own beer, wine, booze, etc; no charge; and they give you a glass and opener. If you need a mixer you pay for that. Chips are free; the place is a bit funky and small but it is awesome. The art on the walls is NOT for sale and has, for the most part, been donated by local artists; who knows what it is worth and who cares? This is a "flash back" place. SUGGESTION-- Tip well so they can stay in business; they don't charge enough. Oh,,, one last thing. The #2 or 3 rated hotel in the USA, the Motor Lodge, is right across the street. Stay here; eat here. You kidding me? This is great! Notice: If you want to eat in a chain restaurant, go! If what you want is a piece of Americana, go here! You will not regret it.

Well we just got back from here! They had just opened for dinner. OMG the food was awful the place was dirty, wish we would have seen the cook and kitchen first. No food was covered the pots and pans were on the floor the cook looked like he just got through working on cars in a junk yard, he was filthy. After a few bites of Chili relleno a chicken taco our stomachs were turning! The chicken was not seasoned the enchilada just had chicken rolled in a tortilla w red sauce on top.The cheese in the chili rellenos was like rubber. I am not sure where all these other people ate that reveiwed Mayas or what state of euphoria they were in but please if you must try this place first look over the counter at the kitchen you may just turn around and leave!

We used to love Maya. The food was fresh and delicious. The last couple of times have been marginal and the last visit was the straw that broke the camels back.

We got the "usual" carne asada burrito and chicken chimichunga. My husband's burrito was good, however my chimichunga was awful. The chicken used to be tender and shredded but this time it was just chunked up boiled chicken that had now taste and the tortilla was soaked in grease as if it was fried in oil that was not hot enough. This evening my husband went to the restaurant to talk to someone about the situation. He spoke with the owner and he told my husband, "There is nothing I can do."

REALLY?

So, if you want to spend your hard earned money on crappy food, be my guest. Know that the food is not good and the owner doesn't care if you don't like it. He already has your money.

Small place, limited hours, but the food here is GREAT. Home-made everything. I will crave this until our next trip to the southwest!
