“Amazing adventure and horseriding experience!”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

I was looking for a horseback riding adventure and I stumbled upon the Hideout Ranch with Craig and Tamara Lawson. Well, what a find! If you’re looking for a true Ranch experience, this is it! This is a working ranch with horses and cattle and they’re taken care of by the Lawsons. It’s rustic, wild, and homey at the same time. I was comfortably nested in one of the bunkhouses that Craig built, and enjoyed 3 homemade meals plus delicious desserts every day! The horses are amazing! They’re all friendly, affectionate, well taken care of, beautiful health and wonderful to ride on!
I wanted to truly learn more about horses and improve my riding and I found that Tamara teaches the Centered Balance Riding technique and that topped off this place for me! I got everything I wanted and more – a chance to truly work with horses, experience breathtaking trails, improve my riding technique, rest and relaxation, and new friends!
The Lawsons keep their groups small to ensure that you get the level of attention and care you deserve. You are working with salt-of-the-earth, experienced wranglers, I trust both Craig, Tamara, and their farm hand(s). They endeavor to make you a part of their family and you’ll come away richer than when you arrived!
The location is remote and you get to enjoy the desert, the sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, the stars at night are beautiful, and the drive to the Ranch brings your through gorgeous landscapes. **Note:- Ahem! Watch your speed on I-10…nuff said!**

Thank you! We so very much enjoyed your visit with us - except that it was way too short! You did a great job riding, and were so much fun to teach. We do keep our groups small so everyone gets that one-on-one attention we think is so important. Glad to hear it was important to you, too. We look forward to having you come back and ride with us - SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We came to Hideout Ranch as part of our honeymoon in October/November 2012. The ranch is the most incredible place, surrounded by sensational scenery and hosted by 2 of the nicest people I have ever met. We were made to feel so welcome, and at the end of the week I really didn't want to leave. The food is delicious (especially the sausages at breakfast!) and is cooked over an open fire. The bunkhouse we stayed in was cosy, beautifully decorated and so peaceful, you really feel as though you are in another world entirely. The riding is amazing, no trail is the same and everything is tailored to what you want to do. Craig and Tamara took us to Tombstone for one of our days, to see the "town too tough to die" and soak up a little history. Your trip can be well and truely tailored to you. There are so many different places to ride, and so much out there to see. The horses are all beautiful animals who love to be out on the trails, and they have a horse to suit every level of ability. My non-rider husband (luckily!) developed a taste for riding while we were there, and we have already discussed our return - it can't come soon enough.

We were so pleased to host you on your honeymoon! It was great fun to share our corner of the world with you, and loved riding with you. Spending the day in Tombstone was a blast - watching you enjoy made the day really quite special! When you day starts with breakfast over an open fire, it can only get better! We look forward to your return - soon, however I must tell you. The fat, fuzzy puppy who greeted you with licks and yips has grown to an immense size. While you won't recognize him, we'll certainly be happy to see you both!

We stayed in March 2012 at the end of a road trip through SW USA and had a wonderful time. The ranch focuses on riding and tailors trips for each individual / group. They have a great selection of horses which will suit all ability levels. As an almost complete beginner I rode a two very steady horses during our stay whilst my wife, who is more experienced, rode a horse with a lot more zip.

We rode for 5/6 hours a day, through beautiful scenery in the nearby national forest. The terrain.was at times challenging for a beginner but the horse i was given was so steady that i never felt very worried - just tired at the end of the day!

The food was tasty and there was plenty of it. The room was cleaned daily. Craig was an excellent host.

They have a few different cabins and houses where guests stay (we stayed in a clean nicely laid out cabin) - set in 800+ acres against the backdrop of the beautiful national forest. This is a small operation (in terms of guests not the size of the ranch!) so there is unlikely to ever be more than 6-10 people staying at one time. As a result of their small size they really make an effort to cater for what you want to get out of the riding holiday.

What are the negatives? Well it is quite a way from Tucson (2.5-3 hrs by car) and indeed anywhere (which will attract many people but is worth knowing). It is also definitely for those who want to do decent amounts of horse riding - at whatever level of ability you are. If you want a luxury ranch where you get to ride for an hour or two a day I would choose somewhere else.

I would highly recommend the ranch and will go back if we are ever in this area again.

Room Tip: Just speak to Craig or Tamara

Craig went on about what a great time he had riding with you. You are right to point out our focus on riding - it's what we do. We're grateful our guests recognize the opportunity it affords us with them to be small and, dare we say, exclusive? We can tailor the rides to our guests' interests, and make sure we match them with the best trail companion possible. We're so glad you enjoyed yourselves, and look forward to having you return!

Our April 2011 trip to Hideout Ranch in Portal Arizona (on the AZ/NM border) marked our third trip to the ranch in one year. Yes, it's that good! Hideout Ranch is all about riding, and their horses are fabulous. Head Wrangler and Owner, Craig Lawson carefully hand-selected our mounts to suit our riding experience. He knows his horses, that's for sure!

Each morning, after our home-cooked, hearty breakfast (cooked over an open fire, with plenty of piping hot coffee,) we loaded our horses and trailered out to a new destination. Each new day welcomed us to a wonderful new adventure. The area surrounding the ranch is chock-full of American history. During our stay, we rode to Horseshoe Canyon, Fort Bowie, the Chiricahua National Monument, and, on our last day, rode right off the ranch property into Owl Canyon. The newly built cabin is homey, comfortable and well furnished!

Each ride was more spectacular than the one before it. The scenery and terrain changed dramatically from ride to ride, and the horses took it all in stride. We had the opportunity to ride in places most Americans only read about in history books or watch in Western movies.

Hideout Ranch owners, Craig and Tamara J. Lawson are horseman first and foremost, and just genuinely GREAT people. It doesn't matter whether you’re at the ranch for a short stay or a long stay, you’re going to have an awesome time.

Room Tip: Request the newest cabin, it's delightful!

Funny you should mention the "piping hot coffee" - I was thinking about that just this morning. We had such a great time riding with you all during your third visit! You realize, after two, you're part of the Hideout Ranch family! Whether we trailer or ride "out back", we do have the most amazing landscape to enjoy on horseback. Now, when are you coming back for an even four?!
