Our Tucson outdoor group always stays at this facility when we visit Portal and the Cave Creek area – at least two times a year for birding, winery visits, sight-seeing, and hiking. The Webster family that owns and operates the lodge is always courteous and helpful and runs a top-notch lodging and dining operation with reasonable prices. The rooms are always clean and comfy. There is a spacious deck outside with umbrella-covered table and chairs for those before-dinner wine tastings. The small general store is well-stocked, including beer and wine (with some local vintages). Their small cafe serves three meals a day of very good home-style food. The liver and onions is superb, the crispy potato-flour fried chicken is great, the grilled pork chops are incredible, and the breakfast huevos rancheros dish is awesome. At the lodge, one can also find see an abundance of birds along with deer and the occasional javelina, coatimundi, and ring-tail cat. The spectacular Cave Creek Canyon area offers tremendous recreational opportunities, and the Portal Peak Lodge provides a very pleasant additional experience.
