Basic comfortable rooms with restaurant service for dinner and breakfast. Good place to stay for hiking and birding in the unique Sky Island mountains of SE Arizona. Clean, restaurant has good basic food and service is thoughtful. No pool, but real bathtubs. Wish I'd had a refrigerator in my room. You'll hear early risers because of the layout and wood deck, but you'll probably be one yourself. No TV, but doe have good Wifi. I was happy to have such comfort while I hiked and birded this beautiful area.

Room Tip: All the rooms are the same.

We spent 5 nights at this hotel with a birding group. This is the only place in a remote area where you can stay and also be fed. The rooms are very basic, but the beds are comfortable and it is clean. The food was better than we expected.

Birders don't really need luxury. We are used to roughing it a bit. But most of us pay real attention to detail and notice when the room needs a little help. The rooms are indeed pretty basic. That is OK. But when the sheets are so old that they are practically transparent maybe it is time to retire them. A hand towel should be spotless too. An ice machine is nice, but if there are cleaning chemicals stored in the same room and the room itself obviously hasn't been cleaned in a long time, I'm not comfortable using the ice. Even the flat tire pickup truck in the parking area could be removed pretty easily. This place is in a great location and has a lot of potential, but for the price I expect a little more. I suspect that this whole area is struggling somewhat, so maybe taking the time to show attention to details would help.

We loved the setting of the Portal Peak Lodge and the room met all our needs. It does feel like a bit of a flashback experience but the frig and microwave were nice additions.

I can't really overstate how isolated this place is. The restaurant and store have limited hours and vary greatly with the season. I would highly recommend calling ahead before your visit and plan your meals accordingly. We ended up driving to the nearest dinner option which is 25 miles away in Animas and closes at 8 CST.

I'd love to go back when everything was open and stay longer!

Great location for your birding experience in Portal. Very nice service, but the rooms are old and very basic. For the money they charge one can expect a bit more. Be sure to visit the restaurant, the food is really good there.

Room Tip: Go for a green chilly burger, it's the best I had ever !

the rooms are all the same. they are comfortable, with 2 beds, a table, 2 chairs, alarm clock and small bathroom. the rooms are very clean. the walls are thin, but usually everyone goes to bed early because there's nothing to do after dark and no tvs in the rooms, so it's quiet for sleeping. the wall unit for heat and a/c works very well. you can get ice at the store before they close at 7 p.m. there is no fridge or microwave in the rooms- they want you to spend money at their store and restaurant.
the setting is beautiful and peaceful- the stars at night are awesome. best hiking trails are just a few miles away- try silver peak trail or cave creek. also an area well-known fro birding.
but everything in the area charges $75, which is way overpriced for what you get.

Portal, AZ and Cave Creek Canyon are worth the visit!

The Portal Peak Cafe and Store and Employees are great--so friendly and nice. They also have a nice wine selection in the store. And, it is a great birding spot. We saw a rufous hummingbird first thing.

The accommodations are just average...they are clean but are really only a place to rest your head. The rooms are essentially two double-wide trailers split into rooms with a deck in-between. I have stayed at many not-luxury hotels but (this is just personal opinion), was just not for me. I think it was the strange walls and virtually no outdoor light that rooms provided. But, if you are merely looking for a place to crash, this will do.

Also, helpful hint, even though the website touts Rodeo, New Mexico as the closest town, it really doesn't have much. The Portal Peak Store has more than any store in Rodeo and better food. There is no gas in Rodeo so fill up elsewhere.
