...while a great acoustic band was playing, a real treat! Later went for a full dinner that really measured up!

“ROY'S THE PLACE”
Reviewed December 12, 2013

Four of us , staying at the Marriott and went to Roy's for Friday dinner...
The service and food was outstanding...Our water guy John Paul was right on top of it... If we needed anything-he was right there.. All our needs were met.. We ended up with left overs(large portions) and John put meals in packaging for us... The coconut shrimp app was outstanding... Meatloaf was the best I ever. I will come back next time I am in Phoenix...

“Excellent service - wonderful food - Perfect ”
Reviewed December 10, 2013 via mobile

I love interesting flavorful food.

My Blackened Ahi dish was flavored with mustard and gave my divine fish a bit of a kick. My companions entrees were well received but did not have the spice that mine did. They were very pleased as well.

Our service could not have been better.

I left satisfied by a meal that I could not have hoped to prepare at home. Worth every dime.

“Despite the initial assessment....we'll probably return!”
Reviewed November 13, 2013

You've heard the expression: "You get what you paid for"? That may have originated at Roy's because you don't get it there unless you pay for it! Well, not completely true...water from a pitcher is complimentary and also....but first...

Roy's Phoenix location is inside the giant JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort. By car you have two parking choices: Valet or self park. If you choose self park, drop whoever is with you off at the lobby entrance since it'll be a long walk after parking in the lot down the hill. Roy's on the floor below the lobby. Stairs or elevator will get you there. If you Valet park (better choice) that'll cost ya $5 (provided you have the Server at Roy's validate your stub otherwise it'll cost ya $10)!

The restaurant layout is vertically "shaped" and zigzags. After you pass the busy bar and zigzag there is a meeting room at the far end. In addition to tables of 4, there are "U" shaped booths that easily seat two on a side, maybe three for a total of 9. (They tried to seat the two of us there, but because we were so far away from each other, we switched to a table for 4.) At the rear is an open kitchen (you can sit at the counter). In that rear area where there is that open kitchen & meeting room, there is a below the shoulder high partition that separates the patron tables from where the servers pick up the food which is wide enough for those tending the dinner meeting to use rather than pass the aisle where patrons are seated. Throughout dinner staff carried cases of supplies (bottled water/dirty dishes, etc.) to/from the dinner group passing the patrons tables rather than going behind the partition. Very distracting. An alternative is outdoor seating.

As mentioned, water from a pitcher is complimentary (their first attempt is to sell their bottled water) and then comes complimentary edamame beans, specially coated and somewhat spicy.
Although service is attentive, the bar & kitchen are s-l-o-w. It took forever just to get the glass of wine! You've eaten the beans...no other anythings... the appetizers won't be there anytime soon (nor will the entrees) what do you do? If you aren't conversationalists or you're not with a larger group, bring a book to read-although you may need a flashlight in the dimly lit eatery!

Having said all that, the food was very good; exceptionally well presented. Not wanting a large portion we asked how many coconut crusted shrimp were on the appetizer. 5 was the answer...it came with 4...but they were large and good. The mussels in a thick, hidden underneath the limited number of mussels, spicy sauce was also very good. We each had different fish, decent portion entrees, nicely prepared & presented. Didn't have, but two desserts (souffle & upside down pineapple cake) need to be ordered at the start of the meal. We shared their apple-cinnamon tart w/yogurt ice cream, also very good.

The parking stub is validated at the end of the meal. In summary: the place is upscale, the food is very good (although not the largest portions), dress is casual, be prepared for slow service. If you can handle all that, try Roy's. We decided when our guests visit this winter, we'll treat them to dinner at Roy's.

As an aside, don't forget to visit the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) located not far away. That place is definitely worth a visit.

“Roy has sold 51% to Flemings and Outback Steakhouse”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

We had a good meal last night but based on the last 2 reviews I wonder if they experienced some of the changes that are being made. We're big fans of Roy's Restaurants and usually dine at them when we're on vacation. We were talking to our waiter (who shall remain nameless). He provided excellent service. He mentioned that Roy has sold 51% ownership of his restaurants on the mainland to Flemings and Outback steakhouse. Roy will be concentrating on the restaurants in Hawaii and he is experimenting with a new concept for restaurant there as well. This has happened over the last couple of months and apparently there are major changes being planned. The staff have been told to no longer greet customers with "aloha" as they are trying to get away from the Hawaiian theme. The cuisine is also going to be undergoing changes away from the Hawaiian fusion cuisine now being served. Our server who has been with them a number of years said that they did not like the changes being made and they probably would not be staying much longer.

We had a great evening on the patio and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I hope we don't have to go all the way to Hawaii to enjoy the Roy's experience again.
