our favorite restaurant in the area; very personal and great service and unique menu. Good group meal location; prices have great value; romantic and a "take your time and enjoy" pace. Nice bar area.

“Ruffino is a great experience...”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

Dined with family recently. A first rate dinner restaurant. Good service. Homemade pasta, decent portions, entrees in the $17-19 range. The dinner was well paced, server attentive to our 'we ain't in a hurry' request. Owner stopped by the table to talk. Even a decent jazz singer in the lounge. This was a good representation of 'american-italian' food, hard to find in arizona where portion sizes and cheese amounts sub for decent italian fare. Entrees on this visit; cannelloni, ravioli, veggie pasta, daily special chicken marsala with side tortellinis, all with house side salad. All were above average meals, the cannelloni was outstanding. Only gripe was the 'happy hour house wine price not available in dining room' thing, a disturbing trend in my opinion. Some minor service slips, nothing to rate a negative response from me. Will visit again.

“Interesting Discovery of an Older Restaurant”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

How is it that you can drive by a restaurant for years that is fairly close to your home and all of a sudden realize that I have never had dinner there? We enjoy good Italian cuisine and needed to solve this mystery and thus headed for Ruffino Italian Cuisine on a Saturday night.

It is nice to be greeted warmly by the hostess and have our reservation time honored. This is a very comfortable restaurant and our table location was excellent as it gave us the opportunity to observe the buzz of the restaurant. Ruffino’s does have its “regulars” as it seemed many diners knew people at other tables.

We began with martinis and were a little dismayed that they were served in these tiny little martini glasses which would be better used in a young girls playhouse or perhaps served with a Shirley Temple. If a restaurant wants to start on the right foot, they need glassware with appropriate character and weight. These did not.

Our appetizer of Blue Point oysters on the half shell was nice. I thought the dinner salad selection were expensive, but then learned that salads do accompany the entrée, so no need to order the larger salad. I really enjoy a Caesar before the entrée, and was surprised that all salads are made table side, even the side entrée salads. Preparing salads table side is a lost art in most American restaurants. I was further surprised at the size and quality of the “side” salad. It was excellent.

When we are enjoying a certain cuisine, such as Italian, we tend to compare it to a similar offered dish at restaurants we know we like. My wife had Eggplant Parmigiana, and while tasty, she preferred the dish at Rigatony’s who slice the eggplant thinly and did not overwhelm it in cheese. My thoughts were similar on the Linguini with Clam Sauce. I much prefer the Linguine Vongole at Va Bene. There most certainly was a difference in taste and presentation. The mix of clams with linguini was a little overwhelming and I much prefer claims in their shells with the proper mix of linguine that Va Bene does. Perhaps it is difficult to compete with a restaurant when the primary chef in the kitchen came from the country of the cuisine.

The deserts that passed by our table looked wonderful, but we were beyond full. I also appreciated that the management of the restaurant worked the place and stopped by a couple of times to make sure that we were enjoying ourselves. We were. Will we be back? Yes, but perhaps not as frequently as Va Bene.
