I LOVE black licorice flavored ice cream and Mary Coyle's has it! I live in Vegas and nobody here has black licorice ice cream :( Whenever I'm in Phoenix, I head to Mary Coyle's for the black licorice and lemon custard flavors... They're both wonderful!

“Life's a Bowl of Cherries at Mary Coyle's Ice Cream”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

Once upon a time there were more of these locations, and the remaining one is on 7th Avenue and Missouri Ave in Phoenix. As we've been coming to MC for about 25 years now - and for 25 years I have been ordering the same thing because I just can't get enough. The towering Twin Chips is 2 scoops (large for the "regular" size and medium for the "pippin" size) peppermint ice cream and chocolate chip with whipped cream, roasted almonds, chocolate sauce and a cherry on top. I think the combination of salty nuts and sweet/cold ice cream is pretty near perfection. Another amazing fact is they also stock Black Licorice ice cream, which I haven't seen since another company stopped carrying it back in the 1960's...needless to say I was thrilled to find it here - plus there are all kinds of different flavors you don't find anywhere else. Also a complete menu with all kinds of lunch and light dinner items, and ice cream packs to go. Artfully decorated with the traditional old-time pink and white stripe wallpaper, waitresses wear pink poodle skirts. Great theme restaurant which can accommodate large parties and sport teams. Looking forward to 25 more years of ice cream!

“A fresh remix on a Phoenix classic”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

Other ice cream parlors come and go yet this one lives on. And with the new ownership the parlor has a fresh, classic and delicious offering my kids ask for. The service is cheerful and efficient, the food all American. The kids menu has many choices and for the adults the sandwiches, soups and salads make you feel okay about ordering the ice cream...which is a must so get the half-sandwich or soup and save room! Yes, they have your favorite ice cream flavors however, I love the seasonal flavors like peach. They are open for lunch but in the dead of summer a late night run just for ice cream (try the drive thru) really satisfies a craving.

“Needs an overhaul...”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

This place could be soooooo much better, all that they need to do is re-do the interiors and change the presentation... the ice cream is great, the concept just needs to be updated... if they don't, they're just going to die off...

“A tradition in Phoenix...”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

Mary Coyle Ice Cream has been around since forever in Phoenix - no longer owned by the original family, and the portrait of its namesake is gone from the wall, but the ice cream and the pink color-scheme are still the same, althoug the hot pink colors are toned down a bit from the "old days" by the addition of lots of black. When I say a Phoenix "tradition," I really mean it. I went on my first date in 8th grade, chaperoned by an older sister and her beau, and I am now almost 60 years old! Mary Coyle still serves my favorite sandwich in the world -- the Sweet Virginia Ham. I'd drive miles out of my way to get one. For the ice cream, just pick your favorite flavor of the multitude offered and know that you can't go wrong. It still tasted like it's made the olde-fashioned way.
