“5 time return visitor...”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

And I will return, but I'm crossing my fingers the villas are a bit more updated next time.

We put in a request for a specific building didn't get it....but I do understand "request" is just that. Our unit was on the 2nd floor and there must have been a bunch of kids on the third floor as we heard major footsteps day and night. Furniture is getting worn and dishwasher needed to be adjusted so racks roll in and out.

That said, this is a great resort with JW Marriott amenities as part of the package. There was a huge convention at the JW so property was practically empty if you dared brave the pools and lazy river in the chilly weather.

Activities as we know from previous visits were lacking a bit, but that wasn't a huge factor. We enjoyed dining at the JW and Desert Ridge shopping is a 1 mile drive or just a shuttle trip away.
White Tiger Yoga wellness was a great week long option that we would choose again. Brett was a great instructor and a super people person....even if you couldn't keep your balance. Life long lessons were a great take away benefit. Brett is the best!

Overall, we'll be back....it's a great location with a beautiful property to relax at.

Room Tip: Only a top floor....too much noise in the middle.

We just finished a week at the canyon villas. The resort is beautiful & great location. The very best part of this week ended up being the fitness classes with Brett. He was amazing. If you can, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to attend his classes. He had a great package deal so you could go to all of them for the week. We had no intention of doing this & my husband has had 3 total hips so are always careful with what he can do. It was amazing for both of us. His classes are low impact stretching and aerobic and yoga &Tai Chi intro. We got great workouts and learned routines that we can do when we get home. Brett was Great! With a smile on his face all the time he makes learning fitness fun even when you are working up a sweat. A great way to start our day and at the end of the week go home feeling more rested mentally & physically, more fit, and a plan for fitness when we get home. All of the exercises are done with socks or barefoot and you don't need any special clothes....except a swimsuit for the water exercises if you do those.

Recently stayed at the Marriott Desert Ridge - in the villa's - for the 4th time in the past 5 years. The hotel itself in beautiful and well maintained and updated, but nothing has been done to the villa's in all this time. They are run-down, dated and sad. We loved the amount of space you get - perfect for a family - but found the colours, decor, general state of things to be old and depressing. After making this our go-to spot for so many years - we will now be looking elsewhere...unless they do an update. We visited friends staying at the villa's at the Westin Kierland while we were there and loved it. Modern, cool, updated and with so many upscale shopping and dining choices within walking distance - it's an easy decision for next time.

Room Tip: Third floor overlooking the golf course is the way to go!

We have visited Phoneix 3 times, our first was the Hotel Valley Ho-nice but not for us, we are middle aged and the constant loud pool music scene was just terrible, but the hotel is nice and close to everything. Second visit was Westin Kierland Commons, lovely hotel grounds, golf and shopping close by. This yr. we chose the Marriott Canyon Villas. An excellent choice, we check our bookings constantly after booking on line and were happy to see the price for a one bedroom drop twice and in the end booked a 2 bedroom to have the extra bathroom and bed in case one of us is snoring too much...lol. IT WAS HUGE, we got the 2 bedroom by pre paying for a total of $212 a night, they gave us a one bedroom and studio lock off. We have a kitchen and a half!!!. Lovely quiet room overlooking children's pool. We went early January and while the temperatures were cooler (low to high 60's) we loved the sunny days, blue skies and it felt wonderful after leaving Alberta Canada with our cold long winter days. Our one bedroom was HUGE, big living room, full kitchen, large bathroom with a seperate tub area and sink and a second area with a huge shower, sink area etc. VERY QUIET at this time of yr. No line ups for anything, no one at pool we laid out at the kids pool a few times to get a bit of sun. There was everything in the kitchen and extra kleenex, toilet paper, dishwasher soap was in the room already. Grounds are lovely and well taken care of. There is a larger pool with small poolside food area in the middle of the property, that area is or would be noisier so we would not want to have stayed there. Getting a golf course view would also be nice. Small playground area for children, sand volleyball area, and 3 pools in total on the property.Patio lights decorate some of the grounds areas. Great area to be in-big plus was it was so quiet you didn't need reservations to eat anywhere. Use of the JW Marriott for everything was perfect, more pools, very good restaurants-Meritage-wonderful service great steak, Roys-eating outside with lit torches and heaters on great food and service. Close to Desert Ridge outdoor box store mall with tons of shopping including movie theatres, Target, Khols etc all 5 min away by car. There is a van to take you around but our car rental was so cheap that it worked out great to have our own transportation. Went to the property ownership talk-didn't buy but hey we got golf for 2 of us free and saved $100 each!! Also will take the talk again next yr getting the same rooms at a bit cheaper price and free golf again:) Very helpful and friendly staff. It sure is nice to get on a direct flight out of Alberta and in 3 hrs you are in a warm and sunny climate-sure breaks up the winter.

Stayed here twice so far once, with sister and once with husband. I always check availability here first when using my Interval timeshare to trade for my home unit. Second stay received a an extra week and decided to try Tucson, Varsity Clubs of America resort, should have stayed here for second week. Very large, comfortable, two Bedroom, full kitchen, even laundry within the suite. Stayed in the building farthest from the entrance, view is not terrific but very quiet, away from the main pool. The hot tub is excellent, like a small pool but with no kids. Location is perfect, easy access to freeways to get around Phoenix, north to Sedona and Grand Canyon, lots of shopping/groceries nearby. Stayed in Nov 2010 and Feb 2011, but dates to pick do not go that far back.

I stayed here last summer for a long break - previously spent two fantastic weeks at The Kierland Villas in Scottsdale but was looking forward to a stay at our home resort.

Even though we had phoned ahead and requested particular floors and buildings on arrival (2ish) nothing was honoured. We were not impressed but we said we would wait for the apartment building we had requested ( 26 or 27).

We went for something to eat returning at five and were offered a room we had been offered hours
earlier - no reference to the phone requests or my earlier conversations.

We were told we could have a ground floor apartment in 28 building but just for that week. We would have to move the following weekend. Not a great idea but we took the room as we were very tired and irritated. We then went to collect our bags from storage and waited in the blazing late afternoon sun while no one came. After about twenty minutes an employee asked if she could
help. We said Yes. Told her our tale of woe. She helped us to our room. We went to eat at the bar.
The same employee picked up our tab for us - a nice gesture.

The room was dated and quite shabby. Certainly had seen better days and after the refurbished Keirland rooms was a real disappointment.

The resort itself is looking tired. The main pool and lap pool in particular need some work doing....grubby tiling and run down looking.

As if this was not bad enough the calibre if guests certainly has nose dived. Large groups of loud
people with numerous unsupervised children running amoke.

Staff said that Marriott had drastically reduced weekend rates to fill the resort.....sad it will drive the investors away. Another owner ( four weeks) was equally concerned at the downward trend.

If Marriott do not improve this resort quite dramatically ( focus on improving what is there rather than building more apartments) I cannot see our future holidays being spent here.

The shuttle buses have a regular two hour schedule - a poor comparison with the on demand keirland service.

I know it has taken a longtime to write this review but I did share my feelings with the resort manager in the Marriott Andaluza in November - he said he would pass them on.

We will see .....one last thing, we own here ( two weeks) and I am a long standing platinum elite Marriott rewards member....my last week was in a one bed master and we only needed the room for two nights - Marriott would not upgrade our one bed to two for those nights even though I had five when the room would be empty after flying back to UK.

Inflexible is how I found them this stay....no individual service. As I checked in another guest was cancelling his booking as his requests were not going be honoured and at five his room was still not ready.

Much needs to be done to bring the resort back up to Marriott standards.

Room Tip: Room 26 and 27 near pool. High floors as can be noisy in ground floor apartments.

As MVC owners, this place was what we've come to expect from Vacation Clubs, stunning grounds, fun activities for the whole family, and a beautiful room to sleep in. My one complaint was that I called the conciere two weeks before our arrival to try to make New Years Eve plans. I was never called back and ended up researching myself, days before we left. I ended up spending $50 more on the tickets than if I would have found them earlier (as prices rose closer to the event). On past trips, I have found MVC concieres to be invaluable resources, so this was very disappointing.
