I accidentally booked this hotel for my husband's 3 day business trip. Was one of the best "accidents". He just checked in today.. One of the best hotels he has stayed ( in his own words). He has stayed in many hotels across the globe.. "Cool lights and great service.. great food.." He works out a lot and thoroughly enjoyed his workout at the fitness centre which was very well maintained. He was impressed by the staff's exceptional interaction. We do know this is the result of great training and great leadership. Hats off to the training and management team!

Wow! Thank you for such a nice review, all of our family of staff at The Clarendon thank you for taking the time to write this!

We really do love what we do, we know that we may not be the newest, or shiniest, or most polished hotel out there, but at just 105 rooms we're the smallest hotel in central Phoenix, and we try our best to get to know our guests as well as possible. We have the highest staff:guest ratio in the market, and that's one thing that really helps make the experience great.

Just wait - soon we're having the exterior re-done (it'll take just 4-5 days per side of the building, so this isn't one of those Sistine Chapel touch-ups that takes years and years!), and we've already started replacing furnishings and flooring in the rooms, and will have that project completely finished by the end of the summer.

Thanks again, and I hope to see more great reviews come down the line as we make The Clarendon better and better every day!

Sincerely,
Ben Bethel

Stayed at the Clarendon on a business trip for one night. They have an amaizing pool and jacuzzi. I was on a budget and it was great to know that they would not be holding 100-200$ security deposit. The deposit was somewhere in the 50-60$ I think. They offered free snacks at the front desk like sodas, water, chips, candy bars (for free). They have an amaizing restaurant with authentic Mexican food. They have free Keurig cofee inside your room along with free waterbottles. I have nothing buy good things to say about this place. This is my go to place whenever I'm in Phoenix!

Thanks for the great review - we try to not hold a giant deposit on your credit card, so I'm glad you appreciate it. I was tempted to change this policy recently when a guest dropped her keys into the elevator shaft, was checking out of the hotel, and in an absolute panic so we called for emergency service which cost me $1100 (seriously), and of course now we're stuck with the bill. Argh. Anyway, I won't be changing our deposit policy any time soon. ;-)

Looking forward to your next visit, please tell everyone you know! ;-)

I really like the idea of making something old new again, and while you're at it, something different entirely. The Clarendon Hotel is a funky redo of an old building, with thoughtful touches that make a stay more enjoyable. I wish I wasn't on business and had time to visit the inviting pool, use the free bikes, and just hang out. There is more of a party kind of vibe in the evening with the bar and restaurant access in the lobby, and it was a little noisy in the evening, so I'd recommend it more for a vacation stay than turning in early. People staying here seem to be in a good mood.

The room access is via outdoor walkways on the interior of a square-shaped building with a hidden pool with water features and a glass fountain wall. Upstairs is a rooftop deck with scenic views, a lot of seating, and heaters. The lobby is artsy with local artwork and jewelry for sale, and a station where you can listen to (local artist?) music with headphones. There is free covered parking with electric car charging stations.

In the room, there was more of a sparse modern decor with a surprisingly comfy streamlined couch (I had a suite), mini fridge, individual serve coffee maker with liquid creamers (makes hotel room coffee tolerable), alarm clock with iPod dock/aux cable input, and terry robes. The shampoo and body wash came out of a dispenser in the shower, and at the sink there were Philosophy mini lotion and soap. The heat/AC/air filter unit is a little tricky to figure out but I never found the room temperature uncomfortable. Really comfy beds. The cleanliness was just slightly under par with some trash that was hidden under the sink, but housekeeping the next day was attentive and helpful.

There is an additional resort fee of $17 per night, which includes bottled water, candy and snacks available at the front desk, wifi, and the parking. Because of this when I booked online there was a small discrepancy due to tax on the bill. After I replied to an email that was sent back to the general manager I got a quick response and someone worked on it overnight to find the problem. I was credited the difference.

One of the best meals I've ever had was at Gallo Blanco. Had cheesy corn on the cob, Inca salad, posole, pork torta, and some kind of a spicy mixed drink. I looked into a little of the back story to the restaurant and really appreciate their approach. One or two kind of unapproachable hipstery servers, but most everyone who worked there and at the hotel was very helpful and nice. Also had a good breakfast with excellent coffee. On a Wednesday night they had a live Flamenco band and the lobby turned into a popular lounge.

If I return to Phoenix I intend to stay at the Clarendon.

Thanks for your thorough review, and I'm glad you had an awesome time at The Clarendon.

I'm glad you loved the beds, saw the value in our hotel service fee, and figured out the remote control for the A/C and heating system! ;-)

Stay tuned, we're doing some pretty cool things to the property very soon - a new exterior, new room furnishings, and more. We've started replacing the lighting in the rooms and are getting some 1400 thread count microfiber fitted sheets as the bottom sheet for the beds, they feel amazing!

Front staff were welcoming and cool. Quite helpful in describing all the small things offered by the establishment. The late night soak was enjoyable, good temp but not too hot. Room decor was chilled and I appreciated the music and scent prepared in the room. Really enjoyed the experience, until I got into bed. The bed was really worn and had a big sag which buggered up my sleep for the night. Nice experience aside from the bed, which was unfortunate.

I'm really glad you liked everything about the property, but I'm extremely sorry about your experience with the bed. When I bought the beds, I spend about 4 times as much money as most hotels and splurged for the same exact beds as in the Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons chains at the time of purchase, and every single morning the best compliment we receive is about how well everyone slept! I'm wondering if we had an "XXXL" guest sleeping in the bed in your room previously. Please, please contact us and we'll make it up to you, plus I need to know which room this was in so that I can replace this bed ASAP... I don't want anyone else experiencing this bed and we must find it and send it off to bed heaven before another person tries to sleep on it! ;-)

Off to email my staff right now to find out where the heck this bed is!

Sincerely,
Ben Bethel

Very modern, funky, hip hotel that completely epitomizes Phoenix and the surrounding cities. Definitely urban and youthful, especially the pool area. Awesome water feature happening there. Front desk agents were very nice, and gave us an upgrade for pretty cheap (like $10 a night). Was shocked that the restaurant didn't do room service, although their food was delicious and really affordable. I probably wouldn't stay again only because there is nothing else to do around that area.

Thanks for the review... I appreciate it! You mentioned that there's nothing to do in the area, but we do have a lot of things nearby that you can get to on our free bikes... and soon (we're working on it as I type this) there will be a free shuttle that will take guests from The Clarendon to local shopping areas, movie theaters, museums, parks, concert halls, stadiums, the convention center and airport.

From the outside the Clarendon looks a little like a throwback to the 60s, but the folks who restored this hotel kept the funky look and made it into a really great and eclectic boutique hotel. Everyone seems very happy here, employees and guests alike. Cool music all the time, wonderful courtyard pool and mega-hottub, very popular bar and restaurant. Rooms are very comfortable. Gallo Blanco restaurant is very good for breakfast, happy hour, and dinner. Exceptional value for downtown Phoenix. This is not your basic big chain hotel downtown; switch your paradigm and stay here for a hip feel, very friendly service, and a really comfortable stay. Recommended!

Thank you for your review, and I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay. Fear not about our dated exterior, we've gotten bids to completely sand-blast the exterior and make it look hip and modern - I hoped to do it sooner, but that pesky little recession popped up! ;-) Not only will the exterior be completely changed, but we're working on all guest room furnishings, which should be coming in during the summer months this year!

I'm really glad that you "got it" - that travel is about experiencing things you wouldn't normally experience at home... otherwise why travel, right?! We give you a great experience at a great value, I guarantee it!

Stayed at this hotel for 3 days and there is nothing to complain about. The front staff are pleasant, welcoming and accommodating! Even though there is a charge per day (~$17) for essentials such as internet, water, parking snacks, towels etc. it is worth it! Snacks and waters are always easily accessible through the staff. A staff member even walked a customers dog because she was stuck in a meeting, now what kind of staff does that?...obviously one that cares about their clientele.

The rooms are very comfortable and cozy and everything was clean. There is soft music and a scentcy within the rooms which are small bonuses in my eyes.

Great place to stay and I would recommend this to anyone!

Room Tip: higher rooms have less noise.

Thank you for your wonderful review... I'm glad you loved your stay and mentioned that your service was great. I try to hire my staff because they have a true heart for service first and foremost. I'm glad you also saw the value in our daily hotel service fee... some people are surprised by it, but we include so much in it that no other hotel would dream of giving away...
