“Don't let the exterior fool you. This is a great, hip, funky, boutique hotel. Very cool!”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

From the outside the Clarendon looks a little like a throwback to the 60s, but the folks who restored this hotel kept the funky look and made it into a really great and eclectic boutique hotel. Everyone seems very happy here, employees and guests alike. Cool music all the time, wonderful courtyard pool and mega-hottub, very popular bar and restaurant. Rooms are very comfortable. Gallo Blanco restaurant is very good for breakfast, happy hour, and dinner. Exceptional value for downtown Phoenix. This is not your basic big chain hotel downtown; switch your paradigm and stay here for a hip feel, very friendly service, and a really comfortable stay. Recommended!

Thank you for your review, and I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay. Fear not about our dated exterior, we've gotten bids to completely sand-blast the exterior and make it look hip and modern - I hoped to do it sooner, but that pesky little recession popped up! ;-) Not only will the exterior be completely changed, but we're working on all guest room furnishings, which should be coming in during the summer months this year!

I'm really glad that you "got it" - that travel is about experiencing things you wouldn't normally experience at home... otherwise why travel, right?! We give you a great experience at a great value, I guarantee it!

Sincerely,
Ben Bethel

Stayed at this hotel for 3 days and there is nothing to complain about. The front staff are pleasant, welcoming and accommodating! Even though there is a charge per day (~$17) for essentials such as internet, water, parking snacks, towels etc. it is worth it! Snacks and waters are always easily accessible through the staff. A staff member even walked a customers dog because she was stuck in a meeting, now what kind of staff does that?...obviously one that cares about their clientele.

The rooms are very comfortable and cozy and everything was clean. There is soft music and a scentcy within the rooms which are small bonuses in my eyes.

Great place to stay and I would recommend this to anyone!

Room Tip: higher rooms have less noise.

Thank you for your wonderful review... I'm glad you loved your stay and mentioned that your service was great. I try to hire my staff because they have a true heart for service first and foremost. I'm glad you also saw the value in our daily hotel service fee... some people are surprised by it, but we include so much in it that no other hotel would dream of giving away...

Sincerely

When you walk in, it's a combination feeling of this is interesting, and uh oh! But get comfortable, you have nothing to fear...of this little boutique retreat!

Comfy beds, soft music, great water features, and an eclectic restaurant are just a few of the highlights.

The bed was heavenly.

If I had one wish- bar and restaurant close too early, and they should allow room charging.

We stayed here for the weekend after a short road trip from San Diego. From the outside, it looks a bit 70's, but once you walk in its great! We had a junior suite overlooking the pool, which was heated, but since the high was only 50 during the day the pool was way too cold. We did however hang out in the lap pool size jacuzzi! Happy hour at the bar was great and they allow you to wander around the property with your drink. Our room was the perfect size; they had a scentsy going and low music on the ipod dock when you walk into your room, which I thought was a nice touch.
We had a bit of an issue with our blinds being broken, and then not being fixed correctly by the maintenance person, and it seems like Gallo Blanco might be a bit short staffed (it took 40 mins for our breakfast to come), but other than that this place was great, staff was friendly, and we would totally stay there again!

Room Tip: The rooms facing the pool are nice, but it can be noisy because the people in the bar were allowed t...

When you first look at the hotel it looks like a dump. But once you go inside, it's very nice. The rooms has an 80's feels. The bathroom is supper small. They have free snacks and beverages. Nice bar and restrantant area. Roof top is cool. Nice pool area. If you are looking for a nice chill hotel, this would be a great place.

Very pleasant stay at the Clarendon Hotel. Confortable room and bed. Excellent restaurant and friendly staff. Very nice pool area. Great roof top lounge area for watching the sun set. Short walk to the light rail transit. The only negative for us was the overpowering room freshener. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Room with a pool view is very nice.

We arrived on X-Mas evening after a very long intercontinental flight. Upon arrival at The Clarendon, we were told that the restaurant was closed and there wouldn't be any breakfast available the next morning either. So yes, we felt more than disappointed when we ended up in a Chinese take-away on X-Mas evening, because all other restaurants in Phoenix seemed to be closed as well. I would have expected that the hotel would notify customers about the restaurant being closed, in that case we would have had something at the airport. Except for the Chinese take-away, they did not have any alternatives available.

And it is a bit bold to tell your customers that there is no breakfast, but they can always grab a granola bar. So finally, for breakfast we went to the nearby Hilton.

The interior design and the rooms are very retro-looking and I do like that style. The hotel has a very edgy vibe. The pool area looked great too, however on our last day, the pool was closed and there was very noisy maintenance going on. Again, something no one ever warned us about.

We finally managed to have breakfast in the hotel on our last day and it was really really good.

Just a pity that we didn't feel very welcome on our arrival.
