In Phoenix for a business meeting, I decided to skip my regular morning run and hike instead. Best decision!! Get up *early* and arrive 15-30 minutes before official sunrise. Cholla trail took me 1:45 start to finish. I'm a triathlete and marathoner and moved at a solid walk, not running or really hustling. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and bring 1-2 bottles of water. You can do it in sneakers, no hiking shoes or special gear needed. Street parking is about a half mile from the trailhead so add that time to your schedule.

Hiking camelback is a must do even if you're in the Phoenix area. The hike is not easy, so be warned. Leave early if it's hot (and to beat the crowds). It will still be busy. Bring water - don't forget this! People have actually died hiking camelback, so it's no joke. Stay on the trail, and give yourself plenty of time. The view from the top is great, but the feeling of accomplishment after the hike is even better! Perfect way to start a day in Phoenix. Grab lunch and a margarita afterwards to celebrate.

We made a rookie mistake and began the hike around 3pm without water. We did not make it to the top. I was exhausted, hot and dizzy. It is a challenge, don't take it lightly - bring water! The views were amazing, the heat ... not so much.

I live in this area, so I have come to know it well. There are several resorts on or around the mountain. Camelback is only a short drive/cab ride to Scottsdale shopping and old town. If you are looking to stay at a resort then I personally feel the resorts on the north side and northwest side of the mountain are the best for views. Regardless of where you stay on the mountain you flanked between the Biltmore area and Scottsdale.

This is as nice a hike can be. Beautiful views, demanding hike, great infrastructure. What more? Even some nice animals along the way, all that in the center of Phoenix!
