No, I would not pay that kind of money for a hot dog, but there must be a good chef behind the ever-changing menu of worldly, gourmet offerings. Curiously, despite the "upscale cafeteria" setting, the wait staff told me not to bother sorting my trash at the recycling bin, as "it all goes to the same place"?!

In the MIM, there are two "food" options. As you enter the Café Allegro there is a counter for pre-prepared box lunches/drinks. You can then eat at the tables in the café.

Then there is the Café Allegro itself, an upscale cafeteria. As you walk down the "cafeteria line", you select the dishes you want. In return you are given a number plaque. Having completed your selections, you pay; find a table; place your numbered plaque thereon and eventually the dish you selected is brought to you at the table. The short/limited menu changes daily and can be previewed on the Internet. The food is upscale and reasonably priced, under $15. There are grilled items (like hamburger) available at the far end and specialty items, including salads, at the start. Again, note, the food is high quality. Presentations are excellent, portions are not skimpy, and the aura is upscale (for a cafeteria).

Because there is so much to see in the museum itself, having lunch at Allegro gives you a nice break if you started your museum visit before noon. Allegro closes at 2PM.

[Note that other reviews have a different take on the eatery. Recommend you check the menu on the Internet (posted is the current and next day's menu). Once you get to MIM you can make a visual check of what's being served.]

Don't forget to visit the three MIM exhibit halls "opposite" Allegro.

It's a little confusing about where to go for which types of food. There's a quick pizza/burgers/hotdogs area up front. Further in is a prepared meal section (you order, they bring to your table). Between the two are the deli-type sandwiches.
We had some sandwiches and they were just OK and quite overpriced. However, we understand that museums have limited customer traffic, so it makes sense that prices will run high. The staff seemed attentive and kept tables clear. The cafe itself is a beautiful and modern area which was very enjoyable. However, if you can eat before arriving or after leaving the MIM, we'd recommend that option.

Each time we go to MIM the food in the cafe is a must for us. We usually select a different item each and share. The pizza was great as was what turned out to be meat loaf. However, twice when we just started eating someone walked by with a hot dog and even that looked good; next time.

We decided to eat a bit of lunch at the museum since we stayed longer than we had expected! The food selection was very upscale and gourmet-like. We ordered soup and sandwiches and both were very tasty. Price was a little on the high side, but overall a nice location with a lovely view of the grounds.
