“Wonderful Food and Atmosphere - One of the Best in Phoenix”
Reviewed May 25, 2012

My husband and I have eaten at The House at Secret Garden three times and it is quickly becoming our favorite restaurant in the Valley. The food is fantastic (and you have to try the Sweet Potato Planks and the Trout spread - they are amazing), the service is impeccable and the restaurant, located in an old mansion from the 1920's is both retro and beautiful. (If it's not too hot I would also recommend sitting in the patio in the back - we haven't been able to do that yet because it's always full!) I would highly recommend this to any locals and to out of town visitors, too. I KNOW you will love it.

“A Hideway in the Phoenix Area”
Reviewed May 9, 2012 via mobile

We really enjoyed this hideway in South Phoenix. The House of Secret Garden has a wonderful patio which on a warm spring night is perfect setting for dinning. The food was very good as was the service. This restaurant is part of several buildings on a farm property. It also is an event space for weddings. If I was staying in Scotsdale it would be too far of a trip.

“Beautiful setting, outstanding food, fantastic experience!”
Reviewed May 6, 2012

We had a 7:45 p.m. reservation for dinner. Arrived on time, but the table didn't. Big wedding on the premises, big group for a birthday party in the barn , and diners never vacated tables so we could get to one we expected would be reserved....till just over an hour beyond our "reservation." Like in the episode of Seinfeld, they know how to take a reservation, but this night they were not very successful in actually having a table reserved.

Despite this major disappointment on our first visit, this was a great dining experience. We were given a table in the bar area until our outdoor patio table was ready (this was the night of the Super Moon). Next disappointment: they were out of Guinness Stout after i had ordered it! But, they brought a complimentary Stout (made in Colorado). It was good despite the surprising lack of a head.

The 4 in our party ordered 4 assorted cheeses as our starter, assisted with recommendations from our waitress. Very attractively plated with figs in a balsamic reduction, toasted almonds, golden raisins and charred bread. The truffle cheese and white cheddar were standouts we would all gladly have again. It helped keep us occupied for about half of our wait for our reservation.

When we finally made it to our garden table (after at least 3 updates and apologies), our mood changed quickly. That fantastic moon, the perfect night temp after a hot day, and the wonderful setting of the garden quickly brightened the evening. And, of course, there were more disappointments. Two of the entrees we were interested in trying were "sold out." That still allowed 3 of us to find what we wanted, but the 4th had a real struggle finding something. Our waitress diplomatically asked what she didn't like on a couple of dishes, then suggested combining what she did like from those two into one. So, a custom meal was arranged. Well done--very good management to trust the wait staff to accommodate customer's dietary needs on the spot!

We had 2 salads and split them so all 4 could sample and share. The grilled romaine was knock Your socks off good. Great dressing! Didn't think anything could outdo that, but discovered the beet salad to be even more wonderful. A different dressing, and both red and golden beets. We all recommend this salad--it made 4 for 4 very happy.

Two of the 4 had the halibut. It came with a spicy sauce that really complimented the fish. Top was golden and crusty. Very tasty! Interior was 4-5 inches of hot, moist, perfect halibut. Did i mention that this was perfect halibut? We live near the Oregon coast and thought those restaurants couldn't be surpassed. Don't think that after our visit to The House at Secret Garden.

Number three had the Osso Bucco. Everyone else had a share.....everyone else had second thoughts on what they had ordered. Thank goodness i was diner three. No need to use the knife provided....this was perfect fall apart with a fork meat. Moist, flavorful, tender. Rich sauce with the veggies it had slow roasted in for most of the day. And, of course, the finale was the marrow from the middle of the bone. So many flavors in this dish--so complex--so satisfying. Tony Soprano would have approved of this version!!!!!

Diner four had a combination of salad, shrimp and the house smashed potatoes. For someone who couldn't find something she wanted once we found out they were out of the lemon chicken and steak....the waitress helped put together something that made diner 4 happy. Bravo!

We were all too full to order dessert, but were tempted by several offerings, most notably their version of bread pudding. i believe we will be going back to try that some other evening...soon.

Absolutely zero hesitations on recommending this establishments. Service was first rate--we never were without water or iced tea. New silverware for every course. The staff even came by when diners left the table and refolded our napkins. Two staff members brought out our 4 meals so everything arrived at the same time. We saw our waitress at the table between servings often to see if there was anything else we wanted/needed. She was truly stellar!!!!!

The chef and his crew were extremely talented. They had a huge crowd that evening and we were the last table we saw seated. What they prepared was truly inspired food after what must have been an exhausting evening.

You decide about trying to get a reservation and then expecting it to be met. Our suggestion is to try to get in on the first seating.

“Great Place to spend Your Anniversary”
Reviewed April 29, 2012

We had some good friends who recommended this restaurant. We were able to sit in the garden at a table under one of the trees for dinner. The table and garden area was delightful. We let the waiter know it was our anniversary and he brought two complimentary glasses of sparkling wine. We split the cauliflower soup and roasted romaine salad. They were both excellent. My husband had the osso buco and I had the pasta dish with wild boar sausage. They were also both excellent. We accompanied our dinner with lovely bottle of wine and split their delicious bread pudding for desert. We definitely recommend this restaurant and will return again to try another item from their menu.

“Lunch under a shade tree on the patio in back is divine”
Reviewed April 15, 2012

Ample parking in back. Walk through the herb/lettuce garden and up the path to the restaurant. Cozy dining also inside the house. A great place for lady friends to "lunch." The menu is simple yet innovative: tasty starters, sandwiches, soups, salads, dessert. The in-house smoked trout, served in a salad is oh-so-yummy. Order a side of hot sweet potato chips to go with it. The green iced tea pairs well with the fare. Finish by sharing a delicious dessert (choices vary.) We dined as a group of four tables; the service was excellent. Stroll the grounds west of the eatery to take in the wedding/banquet facilities. Happy Hour available. Not open Sundays.
