This is one of my most favorite hikes! There is plenty of parking at the Visitor Center. From this point you can head West up to Shaw Butte, or head East on Trail 100 to the Preserve. I prefer hiking on the preserve because to me it's more scenic without burning your lungs off from hiking steep hills. The Preserve part of Trail 100 goes underneath 7th. Street, sending you through a cute little section of overgrown trees that I like to call the Enchanted Forest. From there it goes through several gradual ups and downs. The entire trail is actually 14 miles, however my normal route is to take it until it hits Cave Creek Road, then turn around and head back. It's about 5 miles of great exercise, beautiful scenery, and a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning with friends.
