On a nice day, the main trailhead for the Mountain Preserve off Lincoln Dr. can be a zoo and parking impossible. But the trailhead at the end of 40th St. south of Shea Blvd. is usually more civilized. And if the parking lot fills up there, you can park on the adjacent streets. The trails start out flat, unlike Piestewa Peak, so hiking is easier but you can go up the Yates trail for more of a challenge. There are restrooms, water and shaded tables at the trailhead. When you leave, head up 40th Street and take a right on Shea. Go east one mile to the intersection of Tatum and Shea. The Fry's grocery store has a very nice outdoor, shaded seating area where you can grab a drink, relax and refuel. There are other restaurants and coffee spots at that intersection too.
