We went there for birding, but it was evident that there is lots to do for the whole family in a very attractive location. BTW, the birding was excellent on the ponds.

The papagos are such a pleasant place to visit. It's a public area with plenty of ramadas. We were married at Hunt's Tomb and rented the ramada right next to it. I have seen people hiking, fishing, and lots of bike riding. It's really close to the Zoo, so you can see some of the animals depending on where you are!

Another of the Valley of the sun mountain parks, the Phoenix Zoo is on the South Side, the Botanical Garden on the North. A golf Course in the South West Corner, and WPA build picnic areas scattered throughout. The Tomb of Arizona's First governor is a small White Pyramid in the Park, Hole-in-The-Rock is a central natural feature. Bring a kite and you'll find plenty of open space to fly it.
I never measured this place but it's about 9 square miles of nearly pristine land.
Bring your own water. There seem to be no fountains outside the attractions around the edges.
I've found a picture of Easter Sunrise Services at the Papago Park Amphitheater from 1934. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/459719074432832440/ That was the first event held at the CCC built open air theater. The services continue, but with only 33 hundred seats, and limited parking you might want to arrive on Saturday Night.
Across McDowell Road from there is the National Guard Armory, and the site of a WW II POW camp.
Access from McDowell Road on the North, or VanBuren St on the South via Galvin Parkway. Close by, Tempe Town Lake, and Tempe Beach Park, the Hayden Flour Mill, currently being renovated as a museum, and a Landmark Restaurant, La Casa Vieja. Tempe is a college town, and on Mill Avenue there are plenty of budget minded, up-scale eateries, and the Landmark Valley Art Theater.

Whatever your level of fitness, there's a hiking trail to suit everyone. What I liked was this little park in the middle of a suburban area. Great views of Tempe from the peaks with planes climbing in the sky overhead. Excellent exercise on a hot sunny November day. I loved it!
