We received a wonderful tour of this museum lead by a docent. They have a fabulous collection of native american artifacts and art. Some of the items are old and some are present day. The gift shop contains museum quality art. The restaurant is also excellent. They have native american and southwestern cuisine. Two of their specialties are chicken mole and possole. Tickets were kind of expensive at $18 each but worth it. The museum is easy to find and there is free parking. You can easily spend 4 to 6 hours touring the museum.

This museum is a must stop if you enjoy and appreciate American Indian art. Their collection focuses on native people's arts and culture from around the world with an emphasis on Southwestern Indian tribes. One gallery explaining the beliefs of 14 or so local tribes/bands is very interesting. At first I thought it was kind of hokey but after reading all the text decided it was good. Their blanket collection is very diverse and well-interpreted. The food at the Heard's cafe is very good. Sit outside if its nice.

If you go to the Heard museum take the guided tours. There is so much to see that the tours make it easier to digest. My favorite is the section on Indian boarding schools. If you have children they have some hands on things for them to do .

We come from Washington DC area and have visited the museum on the mall that also tells of the Native American story. I much prefer the Heard Museum because of the wonderful examples of basketry, Kachinas, beading, weaving etc that are there to marvel at and enjoy. The area set aside for young people with crafts and educational exhibits is a must see for all visitors. It tells the story of many different tribes and how the American Indian tribal system leads to many different stories told in their art and daily use materials. We really enjoyed lunch on the museum patio (a little pricey but top quality and convenient) and we enjoyed the welcome by the enthusiastic volunteer guides though we prefered to wander the beautiful museum on our own. A MUST SEE in Phoenix.
