“Great family vacation spot - but beware the 48 inches!”
Reviewed April 21, 2009

The rave reviews that I read were a big reason we went here. I echo all the positives, but will add MAKE SURE your kid is OVER 48 inches tall. They have their height boards by the slides for measuring the kids as well as "the omnipotent oar" in the manager's office, but they are all marked at about 49 inches tall! My daughter was measured at the doctor's office last month and again by me when we got back and she was 48 on the button with both, but a few times she wasn't allowed on the slides. It was OK though - more than half the time she got on just by trying again with another lifeguard (shift changes are every 15-30 minutes).

We absolutely love Arizona for Easter holiday. It's a beautiful State and it is Disney free! We stayed 9 nights in the Arizona Grand and 5 nights in a Scottsdale Villa with friends. This is a very family orientated hotel so our 8 year old daughter loved the company of others her age in the excellent pool facilities (v. important to an 8 year old and mum!). The main pool area had two sections which were connected by a swim-through. One area had a wave pool and fake beach which was great for the little kids - and the second areas had a pool volleyball and pool basket ball which were great for the slightly older kids (like my 8 year old and me). All surrounded by the lazy river and the Waterslides which looked really scary!
In addition, each block of villas had their own pool and ping pong table which were good for a quick dip in the late afternoon/evening if out for the day (these pools are open 'till 11:00 p.m).
Concerns from other reviews about long walks to get anywhere were unfounded. We stayed in a Deluxe room near the Water Park and once you explore all the short cuts, the main areas are no more than a few minutes pleasant walk away. Rustler's Roost was a golf buggy away but that was really no problem.
The room was fine - the seperate living room and the resort wide wireless internet access were very useful. No hidden charges beyond the resort fee. The resort fee wasn't a prolem as we knew about it at time of booking and could therefore factor it into the budget.
We went out on the horses after breakfast 4 days in a row and it was special. Great fun and the Wranglers were hilarious.
The same area can be easily accessed for walking. There are a network of trails which can be easily reached for a long hike or just a short walk which was great.
A short drive into Scottsdale for other fun (we went to a baseball game, MaCdonalds Ranch riding, Crackerjacks play park).
The food on the resort is very poor and we would avoid the room service as it is offensively expensive and rubbish. We used the fridge for storing our own stuff (we made rolls etc a few times and they were tastier and a lot cheaper).
Overall the service was really excellent and very friendly. The Phantom Horse has very friendly & helpful waitresses and waiters but again the food was very basic.
The poolside service was very slow but it was U.S. Easter Break and they couldn't keep up with the demands. That said, a teenager fainted whilst queing in the heat for food and the medics were with here within minutes and she was fine shortly after that.
The water park opens at 10 a.m. and had a long queue from 9:20 a.m. and a race to the seats which is not good for a relaxing holiday experience hence the 3 stars rating in this review. As we only go on holiday during the school breaks we won't return to this resort for this reason only really.

We just got back from the Arizona Grand and I had to write to share our wonderful experience. I have a 3 year old and an 11 year old, so to find a place that entertains them both is rare....but the Arizona Grand did it! The Oasis water park was WONDERFUL!! It was completely gated with plenty of lifeguards, so I felt 100% comfortable letting my 11 year old go off on his own with the friends he met while I splashed with my 3 year old in the wave pool. The people at the Grand were incredibly friendly and helpful. We stayed in the Sedona section, and besides the water park being a very short walk, there were two other pools, one out the front door and one we could see from our balcony!! There were always plenty of clean towels and the place was spotless.

Only a few cons, which I just thought I'd mention, so my post is not dismissed as being completely biased. The food on the resort is EXPENSIVE!! Over $40 for lunch!! There was once or twice when the room was still not cleaned by 2:30, and for anyone with a tired 3 year old badly in need of a nap, that could be an issue. Also, we had a slight mix up on check in. We arrived late at night and were given a room with one king bed...there were 4 of us!! I called the front desk and we were immediately moved to a room with two double beds. They were VERY accomodating, but after hours of travle with a tired toddler, it would have been nice to have been given the correct room from the start. The resort is literally ON the main road, but once you drive onto the property...you would never know!

Other than these MONOR problems, our stay was incredible. We will be back next year!! I LOVED Aunt Chiladas food...the Mexican reataurant on the resort. Some othere have posted that they didn't loke it...but I thought it was great!

We stayed at the Arizona Grand Resort at the end of March 2009. My husband, daughter (26), son (21) and myself totally enjoyed our stay. The water park was wonderful. The lazy river was exactly what we needed. There were plenty of chairs, rafts and space even though it was spring vacation and the resort was obviously filled.

The restaurants were all wonderful. We ate at the Rooster, Sports Bar and the Mexican Restaurant. Service and food was fantastic at all 3. The shuttle service to the restaurants and around the resort was a great addition, especially on the night it turned cool while we were at dinner and we did not want to walk from the restaurant back to our room.

The room was perfect and clean with the right number of towels without us having to request. This is something you do not find most places today. Parking was never a problem, and we were able to park near our room.

The pools were clean. We really enjoyed the adult only pool and hot tub in the evening. It gave us a place to go as a family and not disturb the other families with young children using the regular pools.

My daughter used the exercise room and took classes every morning. My husband and daughter also enjoyed the walking trail.

The location was great and centrally located to the spring training ball parks we went to.

Our only regret was that we did not stay longer. Next visit will have to be at least 1 week as there is so much to offer, we know we would not get bored.

We are looking forward to seeing the Arizona Grand Resort after they open their new lobby. This will just be another great addition to this location.

I would recommend this for families with young children, couples who want a peaceful place away, young adults looking for a nice, safe place for spring break and for families with grown children who would like to spend some quality time together. The resort is so large and has many pools as well as the water park and many restaurants to choose from. The fitness center offers classes throughout the day and the resort even offers a 2 hour guided bike ride.

Thank you for a great spring break

My family of 5 stayed at the Arizona Grand Resort at the end of our family vacation to Arizona. After a week of running around to Arizona's touristy areas we wanted our girls to have a chance to just have fun. This resort was certainly the place to do it! First, I have to say the overall ambience of the resort was fabulous. We were excited when we pulled up to the resort. The rooms were very roomy - especially for a family of 5. There was a living area with a pull out bed and the bedroom had 2 very comfortable queen beds. Plenty of drawer/closet space. The bathroom was a bit small, but the countertop/sink area was outside of the bathroom, so you really did not need much space. The water park was fabulous. Everywhere around that area was clean and there were certainly plenty of lifeguards on location. There were 3 waterslides, a lazy river, a wave pool as well as a 25 person hot tub and another pool area with volleyball/basketball, plus a baby pool. Our waitress by the pool area was super friendly and the food was good.

My only complaint was with the people who cleaned our room. It was not done well and the shampoo/conditioner was not replaced, but that is probably more a problem with an individual, rather than the resort. It was a little pricey to stay here by the time you added the resort fee and taxes, but it was certainly worth it for what you get.

We have three young kids and this was the best resort we've ever been to with kids. The water park is fantastic and they also have a free kids club every day. The athletic club was very nice. The best mexican food can be found less than a mile away (never did eat at the hotel) at Polibertos on Baseline. Be aware of the $30/daily resort fee and drinks and food at the pool are expensive but very good quality. Check in is late and check out is early but other than that we love this place and are coming back! Don't book with EXPEDIA though, they are horrible!!!!
