If you are tired in staying in big chain high-rise hotels then the San Carlos is a pleasant relief. Located three blocks from the Convention Center and Symphony Hall this old but nicely refurbished hotel is conveniently located and at an affordable price. Quiet, clean, and friendly staff. Comfortable beds with lots of pillows that made for a restful night. No in-hotel food service but plenty of options nearby.

Stayed here for a business event at the convention center instead of the high-dollar chair hotels and loved it. Had everything I needed for a comfortable stay. Only two blocks from the convention center so it is the same walking distance as the other big hotels. The hotel manager and the front desk personnel were so kind and accommodating. If going back to Phoenix, this will always be my first choice.

Thank you for the kind review Decafplease! We love hosting our convention center guests and glad you felt at home here. Downtown Phoenix has a lot to offer in terms of hotel accommodations for visitors and as you mentioned are relatively close to the convention center so it beats having to rent a car or pay for parking! Take care in North Carolina and we hope to see you in sunny Phoenix again soon!

I stayed here for a few nights, the location is central. The hotel is old and historic so be aware of this when you look at staying. Its a little different but this isn't a bad thing its just a change from chains. The room was good and featured everthing I would need along with free wifi. The only negative is due to the city being empty it felt like I was the only person staying there.

Phoenix is up and coming and sorry you felt like the only one in town. Imagine how Marilyn Monroe must have felt when she stayed here when she was filming movies in her time! We do thank you for your business and like to think of ourselves as a different accommodation. We keep our 1920’s vibe going but the wifi is nice, isn’t it? Hotel San Carlos might not be for everyone but thank you again for giving us a try.

I really can think of no reason to go to Phoenix other than catching a sporting event Downtown (baseball game this time). It is a 2 hour drive so I would like to have a little fun overnight if I end up there. The Hotel San Carlos is a one of a kind in a generic downtown setting. There is plenty of Hyatt highrise plastic joints around, but nothing from Phoenix's past except the San Carlos. It was built in the 1930's and retains clear signs of those times--cool interiors, small functional only bathrooms and nice lighting. The pool is on the third floor (of 7) and is small, clean and very fun to be in, if you like rooftop pools that is(what fool doesn't?). It is very clean and comfortable hotel--some of those old timey places can smell like a hundred year old pack of Marlboros, but not this place. The beds were very comfy, down comforter really nice pillows. The staff was low key, but totally friendly and very helpful (this is a style of service I prefer). The downtown area is pretty dead at night (hardly any shouting bums!), especially since there was a night baseball game attended by 25k fans. I guess they all jump in their cars and head back to the 'burbs ASAP. We did find a restaurant that had good super cheap food (%$ hamburgers that were good--CRAZY), but was a total joke inside (another story). I will be back to the Hotel San Carlos next time I am staying in Phoenix overnight. But just the night, because who wants to pay $20 bucks a night for valet parking in such a dead town? Good luck on fixing up your downtown, Phoenix.

Room Tip: Outside view rooms have a tub and shower (no view rooms have just a shower) Rooms are small, because...

Thank you for your review and you’re right, everyone does seem to live further out in Phoenix so often a “stay-cation” is in order. We are so pleased to have had your company while you treated yourself to a ballgame downtown and a delicious dinner. Thank you for reminiscing about our historic style which dates back to 1928 when the Hotel San Carlos opened. We like to keep the original makeup of the hotel intact and continue to stand out among our neighbor hotel friends as an oldie but goodie. Good luck to all of your sporting teams and see you when another game rolls into town.

My family and friends have met in Phoenix for the last 2 years for the Diamondbacks/Mets series. Both times we have stayed at the San Carlos. The location several blocks from Chase Field is perfect. The hotel staff is amazing! Dennis the night watchman, remembered us from last year and bent over backwards to make sure our stay was everything we could hope for. The pool on the roof is perfect for relaxing after games. As long as we continue to watch our Mets games in Phoenix, we will be staying at the San Carlos. Thank you for the amazing time.

If you are looking to take a break from the big chain hotels and the corporate hotel feel, this is a good place for you. I would stay here again. Yes, it's a historic hotel, you need to know that up front and be prepared for things associated with an older, yet quite nice property. All these people whining about the shower water temperature, well, you need to expect these things in a quaint property like this. Yes, i was shocked the first morning i took a shower and all of a sudden after hearing a toilet flush next door i was greeted with very hot water, but, it was a nice wake up call. You can deal with it. The place has tons of charm. The walls are a little thin, yes, and i had a noisy neighbor with loud music and the staff took care of that problem immediately. I appreciated that. There was a problem with a front desk employee giving me completely incorrect directions to a Starbucks, and they basically blamed me for not finding it, however.
The A/C worked very well in my room. There is no individual thermostat, true, but if you close the vent it warms up the room just fine. Again, all this whining from these other posts is ridiculous. I would definitely stay here again. One night the elevator was not working, but they got right on it, and it was fixed within hours. So, there may be a few situations, but they work on it. You should know the bathroom is very, very tiny also.

We really appreciate your understanding and appreciating the historical aspects of the hotel. Yes we are trying to preserve everything here to look and feel as it was back in 1920's.
Thank you again!

Although there are some nice things about this old, historic hotel, we chose it for the proximity to the convention center and the fact that it had a pool. In fact, we changed our reservation to this hotel, from a less expensive one, because of the pool! Unfortunately, that is the smoking area! My family wanted to cool off in the pool, but this is the only smoking area in the hotel. I wouldn't recommend it for this reason.

Room Tip: I don't know if there are any quiet rooms here. Our room is above the light rail, which we hear...

We are appreciating your honest comment and regret that you could not enjoy the roof top pool because of the smoking fact. I wish we would have a bigger area to accommodate non-smoking guests. Just like you said it is the only area at the hotel where the smoking is permitted.
Have Great Day!
