“Best Party Ever!”
Reviewed May 23, 2012

I recently graduated from law school and had my party at The San Carlos. I also had family in from out of town who stayed at the hotel. We had an amazing experience. The staff at the hotel are attentive, caring, and generous people who really work hard to create a wonderful experience. The room we had my party in was decorated with simple linens, but with the old 1940's atmosphere was very chic. The rooms were adorable, with some original tiles and fixtures, which we all found very charming. The roof top pool is fun and private, with just the right amount of party.
I would strongly recommend this hotel for events and getaways.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not overlooking the street if you need a quieter environment.

Stayed at San Carlos during a wonderful show in the Ghost Lounge. The room, though small was comfortable and clean - and it was across from the Marilyn Monroe Room and the exit to the great, private pool area. Samantha Childs did everything possible to get me what I needed in a room; and she did it amazingly fast! The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and the Ghost Lounge is Retro Cool. The history makes it even more fascinating and it has tons of character. I recommend getting your coffee and sitting around the pool area in the morning or just as the sun sets, it is peaceful and has elegance. I felt like Marilyn with the pool all to myself and my thoughts.

Room Tip: Just contact them and tell you what you need; they will do their best to accomodate! I liked our 3r...

It was our pleasure to make your stay enjoyable! Thank you so much for staying with us!
Back in the day, Marilyn Monroe, chose to stay in the last room on the third floor for the same reason that the room was the closest room to the pool.
But the main reason of her selecting our hotel was because the Hotel San Carlos was the only hotel with air-conditioning and an elevator in Downtown Phoenix. Many other Hollywood stars preferred to pay $.50 cents more per room just to enjoy the air-conditioned cool rooms.
Today, the Hotel San Carlos the only historic surviving hotel in Downtown Phoenix!

My friends are coming to town in July and I was researching hotels in Downtown Phoenix area. I stopped at Hotel San Carlos to check the lobby, restaurants and room accomodations. The General Manager happened to be around the front desk and happily offered to give me a tour. She told me about rich history of this amazing hotel. It is family owned and their goal is to preserve it's hitorical value while allowing guests enjoy their stay. Great place.......... My friends have booked their rooms and I will be in and around Hotel San Carlos a lot this July.

Easy to reach from the airport using the complimentary shuttle to the light rail, with a light rail station just one block north. Lovely lobby, period piece. I was quite excited by its appearance, and looking forward to my stay. But the small-sized room, although clean, was not up-to-date. No electric outlet near the desk made using the computer to get some work done far less than convenient. There was no in-room control of the heating/cooling system. But the worst thing was the luke warm water for my shower in the morning. This was unforgivable, and could not be remedied in a timely fashion.

Dear Visitor,
Thank you so much for your comment on Trip Advisor regarding your experience at the Historic Hotel San Carlos. Guests like you, helping us to improve our operation and customer service.
The Hotel San Carlos (HSC) was built in 1928. It was the first air-conditioned with the hand operated elevator and the only surviving Historic hotel in Downtown Phoenix. People like to say that “They like San Carlos so much that the built the city around it”. The HSC was and is presently attraction for many Hollywood Stars. We have five signature suites named after stars like May West, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, and Clark Gable chose the HSC for their accommodations.
As far as the size of the rooms, the HSC has 128 guest rooms and some different sizes and individually decorated. Back in days when the hotel was built they had different standards then the modern and contemporary hotels with Jacuzzi suits in it. We are different! We are attracting the visitors and guests who appreciate the history.
Our goal is to preserve the history, while blending the modern amenities for guests’ convenience. We had guests experience that they are in museum without rope saying “Do not touch!” In this perspective I would say that we are not a museum but rather we offer a live experience. We choose to go hard and expensive way by refurbishing the fixtures and furniture rather replacing them with product that one can buy in retail stores. Why? Because we want you to experience what your ancestors experienced.
HSC is constantly working on preventative maintenance to avoid the downtimes while our guests are visiting us. We encourage our guest to inform us if there are any issues while their stay. We have four qualified maintenance team to fix the problems. We are happy to relocate our guest to another room if there are unexpected problems. We like to make our guests happy and feel them home.
HSC is certified Green Hotel. HSC believes that saving water, energy and reducing solid waste is not only saving money but also helping to protect our one and only Earth! We are for the future generation with healthier planet. HSC going step by step implementing new practices to preserve the environment and we greatly appreciated our gusts helping us to achieve our goals!
Please give us another chance on your next visit to Phoenix, Arizona. We promise that will try hard to make your stay more enjoyable. I can be contacted at directly: angela@hotelsancarlos.com

Stayed at the Hotel San Carlos with a group to see the NCAA Tournament. It's a nicet little hotel right downtown, next to the light rail. Great location within walking distance of the USAirways Arena and Chase Field with plenty of places to eat and drink nearby. It's an old hotel, but they've done a good job of keeping it up. It's clean, the staff is nice, the bed was comfy. It has some strange design features and quirky decor, but you get that with an older hotel. That was more than offset by the fantastic rooftop pool and deck -- hanging out there with a cooler of beer was a great way to wind down from the day. Not sure what all the grief is about on some of these reviews -- it was a nice little old hotel.
