“Picnic with friends”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2013

Excellent place for spending time with your & friends, specially when temperatures are low. Had couple of ramadas which were in pretty isolated location, perfect for private ocassions. Hiking trails just around the ramada is great for eating and digesting food (greasy).

“Bird's-eye view of Phoenix!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013

20 min drive from Candlewood Suites takes you into the park and start of a windy road to the summit. Drive slowly. Classic desert ambience. Lots of cacti including saguaro. Nice retreat from the bustle of Phoenix. Good pics from summit. Bring your telephoto lens.

“A great city park in Phoenix”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013

I live about a 5 minute walk from the south side of South Mountain Park and probably have hiked 2000 miles or more in it since moving here. If you are visiting from out east, the landscape is 100% different than what you are used to. There are many trails to hike and ramadas from picnics. Mountain biking is popular as well as horseback riding. The main entrance is on Central Avenue, south of downtown Phoenix. You can drive to the top of the mountain for a great view. The road is narrow and curvy- so drive slowly and carefully.

Another entrance is on the East end of the park just off 48th street (a mile or so north of 48th and Elliott Roads). The entrance road does not go that far before ending at the Ramada and trailhead. Parking on weekends can be packed. The first 1-/2 miles of the trail are wide and are on a gentle slope - so even the little ones can enjoy a hike. At the end of the main trail you won't believe that you are inside a city of more than a million people. There is desert all around.

If you go stay on the marked trails. Off the trails are a lot of loose rock, and a much higher chance of encountering things that bite, pinch and sting, with the emphasis on bite. Bring plenty of water, much more water than you would ever believe you would drink. Humidity can be a low as 5% and you will not feel sweating. And if you come out in the Summer, go early and plan a shorter trip. It can get to 100F by 10:00 AM.

But most of all enjoy, it's free entry and a much different scenery than 95% of the earth.

“Nice Views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2013

This is a great place to hike near downtown! Once at the top of the mountain the trail leads you along the ridgeline, so you have beautiful views all around. Unfortunately the trail map doesn't seem to be quite accurate and the trails are not well marked, so it's a bit tricky to navigate if you haven't been to the park before.

“Only way to truely see the city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

My friends drove me to the top at Dobbins Lookout. The views from the road were beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed the drive. However, I was amazed by the views and the beauty of the mountain and the Phoenix area. Yes, you could see downtown Phoenix and the airport and the rest of the city but from this point you could see how the human development lay within the natural beauty of the desert and mountains.
Without this view, I would not have understood the city of Phoenix!
