This is a beautiful drive. While I was at the summit I was lucky to watch a dust storm sweep through Phoenix followed by a thunderstorm. The city actually disappeared and then reappeared before my eyes.

Take lots of water, wear your sunscreen and enjoy the day! Download a pdf map of the trails from the City of Phoenix website.

This park is designed for hikers and it gives them any type of hike they like, short, medium, long, easy, medium, difficult. You have constant views of Phoenix from the trails. It used to be a great place to go to make out, but I am not sure about that anymore. :) Great views of the city at night from the parking areas.

We LOVE the view from South Mountain, which we suspect is the best view in Phoenix. You can see the whole city stretching out to the mountains beyond, so it gives you a much different perspective. There are a number of hiking trails, but it's worth driving up the mountain even it if's too hot to hike, because it gives you a chance to see what the desert looks like where it's not irrigated. There are lots of saguaro cacti, barrel cacti, choya, occotillo, and others kinds of things that grow naturally in a desert environment.

This is one of the top two things I would recommend to do in Phoenix. (The other is Desert Botanical Garden.)

Check out the city during sunset and you'll know why it's a local fav.
