“Lumenaria nights are worth the trip”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

A short trip to Phoenix was extended by one day in order to experience the annual Noches de Luminaria at the Desert Botanical Gardens on eh first public night of this year. The $25 ticket was worth every cent. Thousands of lumenaria, (with real candles) line the walkways of the gardens. Clear lights on various plants add to the effect.,
In addition to the visuals, there were eleven spots with musical groups offering various genre of music. These included blues, flamenco guitar, world music, handbells, steel drums, native American flute with a story teller, and more.
The gardens close early on lumenaria days and reopen at 5:30 for these special nights in December. The closing time is 9:30. About a week earlier there are special member nights.
Wile at the gardens I ate the very adequate buffet which is available for $17.50 and in which includes beverage and dessert.
Tickets for both admission and the buffet can be pre-ordered in online with no added charge.

Having experienced the gardens during the day, this experience was very different, but as was the daytime visit, was most rewarding.

“The Butterfly Pavillion is terrific”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

We've been here twice. First time on our own, and we liked it, but the second time we had a docent with our group and got a LOT more out of it. Also, the seasonal Butterfly Pavillion is a highlight, try to go when it's there.

“Just plainly phenomenal”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

We were so pleased to hear that settlers were concerned about overcrowding over 50 years ago and created this desert oassis. Just top notch across the board. A must stop.

“Desert Oasis”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

We went this year in May 2012 and the desert flowers were in bloom so it was really pretty. The grounds were super huge, one could easily do it in 2 hours quickly browsing, but I love looking at all the plants and could easily spend over 3 hours there.

Some tips: Go early to avoid the heat midday heat. There are drinking fountains all throughout the garden so that was nice too.

“Not much growing on”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

This venue might have been better on a cooler day, but with the sun beating down on a hot September day, the gardens just didn't offer much to keep my attention. I thought there would be more to offer and maybe at different times in the year there are other sights to see, but for my money I probably won't return to this much overhyped activity.
