We were disappointed in this museum. While there are some nice paintings, the majority of the works are lack luster. The early american collection is good. We enjoyed seeing the Kahlo, Rivera and Calder. We went after 3PM on a Wednesday when there is free admission. It was a good time to go. Plan on spending an hour or two.

We went to see the early renaissance period paintings. We ended up staying for longer as they had french impressionists, native american (no surprise), as well as some interesting modern cowboy sculptures. Interesting part of town and work the visit if you are into art.

Great experience here several years ago. Very disappointed by the unfriendly staff today.
It was as if someone had instructed the staff to drive visitors away today. Quite an odd experience.

We happened to be in Phoenix on a "first Friday," when the museum and city transportation were free. There is a wide range of exhibits, and it seemed that all of Phoenix was there--not crowded in an uncomfortable way, but rather a joy to see teenagers, families with children, everyone enjoying the art! Good food and value in the museum dining room as well. Wish we had had more than the 3 hours we had available to view the collection. Very nice Asian art.

The museum has a nice diversity of art. It's sectioned off clearly and has good maps, so you know where you are. Nice sections on Western art.
There is reciprocity with the Smithsonian, so we got in free.
