“3 hour ride probably not a good idea for non riders!”

We did a 3 hour ride. Which we enjoyed but probably not a good idea for non riders! Which we are. A bit sore the next day! The guide was good and gave information on the desert plants and sights along the way. Only recommendation was to take water as on a 3 hour ride in desert heat it's a must. To the untrained eye horses looked well kept.

Howdy All,
I rode the sunset ride with my wife and 9 year old daughter; we all enjoyed the ride very much. We had ridden in a group ride in Hawaii, but we all thought that this was far better. Our wrangler, Calvin, was funny and informative. He also let there be long stretches of quiet, so we could just soak up the surroundings. It was peaceful and serene, and exciting and spectacular, all at the same time. Many thanks to the Ponderosa Stables and everyone working hard to make our ride smooth and enjoyable.

This was a great family event, our kids and us are still talking about the ride and will remember it for a long time.

Great time with the horses, great views, great food. The wranglers appeared gruff initially but warmed up as the night progressed. They were great with the kids and the horses were magnificent. We were certainly beginners and it was no issue despite the hilly trails.

I would recommend this for any family or night outing. We saw some of the negative comments after we booked our ride and saw no evidence of what they mentioned.

The only issue is that Ponderosa outsources their website to a company out of Colorado, so we would recommend that you call Ponderosa directly to clarify any details or questions. For example, we assumed that the dinner was separate and not part of the cost but the website does not clearly identify that fact.

Also the Wranglers work for tips and we did not know that when we arrived and fortunately the restaurant allowed us to get cash back with our bill so we could tip.

Our recommendation would be that the restaurant sit all the riders together for dinner instead of separate tables, that way we can interact with each other, be served together and we will know when everyone is finished to start the ride back to the stables. We finished a little earlier than others and we would have taken more time if we knew we had more time.

We made some potential good friends from California

This is definitely a repeat event if we are ever back in Phoenix. Thank you to the staff for a wonderful time - The Brockman's

PS My youngest daughter is sending Remy a thank you note.

This ride was our daughter's choice. We have taken horse rides on other vacations and she'd ridden at camp. We thought it sounded like fun and it sort of was and sort of wasn't. There was a mixed group on our ride. We chose the Tbone. It was really hot and sunny when we were riding out. It was slow going to get everyone ready to ride. There wasn't any instruction given which since we had all ridden a few times was OK with us but others were nervous. We rode for about an hour to reach the restaurant. The restaurant seemed ill prepared for a large group. Service was extremely slow and our food was over cooked and cold by the time we received it. We couldn't stand the thought of waiting any longer so ate parts of it and headed out hoping the ride back would be about to begin. We should have known better since the hands were still in the bar. The hands along on our ride were not talkative and not very friendly. We are used to island vacations where tips are an integral part of their compensation. These hands didn't appear to expect any tips and their service wouldn't have warranted any. It was a long ride back in the dark including crossing a road with no caution lights of any kind. I can't imagine there haven't been a few close calls. We were so glad to reach the stables. The ride is just too long and meandering.

Our neighbors decided it would be fun to go on a trail ride together instead of our normal monthly dinner group. We booked a trail ride and breakfast at Ponderosa Stables in South Mountain. The whole experience was terrible. The minute we arrived one of the staff members seemed to be angry and let everyone know it. He rolled his eyes at me when I asked a question. My horse, Beavis, nice name, right, was not happy from the start. His ears stayed pinned back the whole ride, not a good sign and he seemed to labor through the ride. The guides were nice enough and tried to point out interesting sites along the trail.
Those in the back got to eat dust the entire ride because with 10 horses in front of you, there is a lot of dust kicked up.
When we arrived back at the stable we headed over to breakfast which was outdoors and served buffet style. The coffee was awful and so were the pancakes and eggs.
Needless to say we won't be returning to Ponderosa. With so many options for trail rides in the Phoenix area, save your money and go somewhere worthwhile.
