Because my friend knew it would get crowded once the baseball preseason training crowds [and players] came in we went in at 5:30, when we left at 6:30, all the seats were full, people sitting and standing waiting for their tables. Charlie was very helpful in explaining the menu, and the choice of three salsas served with the [free] very thin, crispy tortilla chips. He pointed out that the lunch menu was available to those 60+ for the evening meal. The "senior" portions are just perfect, and the plates were clean. Enjoyed the Tilapia Veracruz, served with a spicy tomato and pepper sauce, along with a few shrimp and scallops. All were perfectly cooked, and arrived HOT. It was served with tasty cilantro lime rice and fresh cooked vegetables, a nice change from the usual mexican fare of rice and re-fried beans. Charlie checked back periodically to see how we were doing, before he came became busy with other tables as they filled up.

This has been one of our favorite restaurants in the Phoenix area and have been there each time we come annually to the area. This trip was our third or fourth visit. The appearance is attractive, and the building is quite large. While attendance is always high after the nearby baseball preseason training games, we received seats quickly for the four of us even on a Saturday. Service was good and help from the manager was also a benefit. So why did we think it was less than we expected? We found that the food -- always the heart of a restaurant -- was less wonderful and closer to routine. We always would have rated it as five stars previously, but now would have given it three stars by comparison with its past; we give it four by considering it still high by comparing it with other competitive Mexican restaurants.

My wife had a special nachos and found them very good except that they were served on half a tortillo rather than with chips, a personal favorite of hers. The house margaritas -- shared by three of us -- were nice but not striking. My meal of Matamoros was expected to be great, with a chile relleno and two varieties of enchiladas; they instead were good but a bit bland. The best of the side dishes was the charro beans, usually hard to find north of the border.

We had no compliants and will have to return to try it again to find whether this was a decline or an exception. Even so, it is quite a surprise to go to a much-loved restaurant and find it closer to ordinary.

This was a repeat visit to Abuelo's for us and we went with a group of 6. The place was busy but we arrived just early enough to be seated without a wait. Our server was a hard working young man who made up for his minor deficiencies by being friendly and helpful. The group had a variety of items from the menu. All of the meals were served in a timely manner and were very hot (meaning temperature). The meals were good but not exceptional. In an area of great Southwestern food, it was the high side of average. The salsa and chips served prior to the meal were like the meal...good but not great.
Abuelo's is a place that we will try again.

I've been to this Abuelo's several times in the last ten years and have never had anything but excellent food and service.

The upbeat atmosphere is always inviting and the staff is always friendly and attentive without being an interruption. The menu has a variety of things to appeal to everyone as well as an extensive choice of drink options.

This is on our "must visit" list when we're in the area!

I love Abuelo's and we often take friends from out of town here for meals. The happy hour prices on drinks are only good in the bar but you can order your drink and then take into the dining room. Drinks are expensive unless you get there for happy hour. For seniors, the lunch menu is available all day which makes their prices attractive - without that option, they are a bit pricy. Still a fun place but gets really crowded ont he weekends.
