I usually don't post comments but my husband and I (married 38 years) enjoyed our stay. We've been telling and showing pictures of our stay to our family and friends and some of them plan to go, I know we'll be returning. We checked a studio room out when we arrived and we weren't that impressed but once we checked the cabins- we said nice, we'll take a cabin.
We stayed in one of their two bedroom cabins with a Jacuzzi out on its deck. It was very nice and comfortable- in the morning we made our coffee and sat outside on our own private deck enjoying the view, the fresh air and the soothing sound of the stream as it flowed nearby.
We did some hiking during the day and at night we would turn the lights out on the deck, get into the Jacuzzi- and gaze at the stars. The stars are amazing; so many stars. You are surrounded by a forest and mountains -
Oh yea- there's a gambling casino twenty-five minutes away too 
The staff was friendly and helpful 24/7 -
Steve and Helen from San Antonio Texas eehaw…
Don't forget to take a light sweater for the evenings.

Room Tip: Reserve a cabin- the view, fresh air, and soothing nature sounds are a big plus -

This is a great rustic looking location with very comfortable beds! We had no issues and enjoyed our alone time we spent in our studio size room. The on site fooderie is nothing to write home about but the service was good and the food satisfying.

Staff was warm and smiled or said hello whenever they encountered you, nice.

We will go again but next time for MUCH longer, ahhhh.

Room Tip: ask for creek side studios if you get the small room; the others open to the parking lot. Even those are nice as your view above the cars is of the wilderness.

Kohl's is all about the old fashioned type of fun--the kind that doesn't involve a television, or internet, but just about being together.

Our room had a kitchenette, which enables us to make or bring our own food. On that note, skip the restaurant on site. The food is mediocre at best and the service is poor. However, I consider that to be a totally separate thing from the lodging.

I spent a nice, quiet evening with my husband sitting in rocking chairs on the back porch reading together. Lots to do on the site--some putting, basketball, swimming, volleyball, bocce ball, a small but functional fitness area, and a library with a few books. Very peaceful, brought out the cowgirl in me, and very much enjoyed looking up at the stars and listening to the sounds from the surrounding forest. It seems very fitting after doing a day of hiking (go see the Natural Bridge!) to come home to Kohl's.

It's so close to Phoenix and yet feels so far away from the craziness. As for the price, we caught a great deal on an off-peak time (summer during the week), cost less than $100/night. I liked that it was away from Payson as well, although I am sure that the 20 minute trip back and forth could get annoying over long periods of time.

Room Tip: Ask the front desk people--they are really great.

We have stayed here 2 times now. The last visit was around fathers day and the restraunt was horrible as it was our first visit, but we wanted to give them another chance. The food was cold and the service very bad and slow. The second time we went we brought food with us to avoid the problem but wanted to have a fathers day breakfast, well the chef never came in and apparently he is the only cook, there was a 2 hr delay so we went in town as many others did also. a 20 min drive both ways. Rooms are not very clean. Microwave was a disaster and we called to have it cleaned, nobody came so we ended up doing it ourselves. No towels and some of the lights didnt work. The grounds are nice, its a shame its run the way it is.

Let me first start off by saying that if you are used to staying at 4 and 5 star hotels then you need to manage your expectations when coming to Kohl's. This is a lodge / cabin type of atmosphere with very rustic, yet nice accomadations at a very reasonable price. The property has both rustic and modern cabins overlooking the creek and then studio units with nice porches directly behind. When we arrived, everyone was incredibly nice. We were a bit early and they did have a room ready that was off the parking lot, but we asked if we could wait for a room that faced towards the grass, forest and creek area. They totally took care of us. While we waited, our 3 year old had a blast checking out everything to do on the big property. Throwing rocks in the creek, putting green, play set with slide, etc, etc. Everything was surrounded by pine trees and lush manicured grass.

We finally got our room and it was small but perfect for a quick weekend getaway. Our room, #216, had a small kitchenette with (totaster, microwave, coffee maker and fridge.) The property has propane grills all over so we stopped at the store in Payson to pick up stuff to BBQ. Throw in a few ice cold beers and we had a great time. Our room as a great rock patio with 2 rocking chairs to just soak up the cool mountain air.

The creek below is great if you have kids and there were a few people pulling some small fish out of there. Our boy had a great time.

The property is pet friendly so if you have dogs and want to bring them, go for it. We also heard that they had a stable with pony rides but didnt get up there to see it. There is a pool, restaurant and saloon that they had live music in as well. The whole place is great.

On our way out in the morning, we crossed the highway and drove the 4 miles up to the fish hatchery is great for kids as well.

My only gipe is that I've lived in Phoenix my whole life and we only just now discovered this place. We will definitely be going back.
