“Great Escape”

Kohl's is all about the old fashioned type of fun--the kind that doesn't involve a television, or internet, but just about being together.

Our room had a kitchenette, which enables us to make or bring our own food. On that note, skip the restaurant on site. The food is mediocre at best and the service is poor. However, I consider that to be a totally separate thing from the lodging.

I spent a nice, quiet evening with my husband sitting in rocking chairs on the back porch reading together. Lots to do on the site--some putting, basketball, swimming, volleyball, bocce ball, a small but functional fitness area, and a library with a few books. Very peaceful, brought out the cowgirl in me, and very much enjoyed looking up at the stars and listening to the sounds from the surrounding forest. It seems very fitting after doing a day of hiking (go see the Natural Bridge!) to come home to Kohl's.

It's so close to Phoenix and yet feels so far away from the craziness. As for the price, we caught a great deal on an off-peak time (summer during the week), cost less than $100/night. I liked that it was away from Payson as well, although I am sure that the 20 minute trip back and forth could get annoying over long periods of time.

Room Tip: Ask the front desk people--they are really great.

We have stayed here 2 times now. The last visit was around fathers day and the restraunt was horrible as it was our first visit, but we wanted to give them another chance. The food was cold and the service very bad and slow. The second time we went we brought food with us to avoid the problem but wanted to have a fathers day breakfast, well the chef never came in and apparently he is the only cook, there was a 2 hr delay so we went in town as many others did also. a 20 min drive both ways. Rooms are not very clean. Microwave was a disaster and we called to have it cleaned, nobody came so we ended up doing it ourselves. No towels and some of the lights didnt work. The grounds are nice, its a shame its run the way it is.

Let me first start off by saying that if you are used to staying at 4 and 5 star hotels then you need to manage your expectations when coming to Kohl's. This is a lodge / cabin type of atmosphere with very rustic, yet nice accomadations at a very reasonable price. The property has both rustic and modern cabins overlooking the creek and then studio units with nice porches directly behind. When we arrived, everyone was incredibly nice. We were a bit early and they did have a room ready that was off the parking lot, but we asked if we could wait for a room that faced towards the grass, forest and creek area. They totally took care of us. While we waited, our 3 year old had a blast checking out everything to do on the big property. Throwing rocks in the creek, putting green, play set with slide, etc, etc. Everything was surrounded by pine trees and lush manicured grass.

We finally got our room and it was small but perfect for a quick weekend getaway. Our room, #216, had a small kitchenette with (totaster, microwave, coffee maker and fridge.) The property has propane grills all over so we stopped at the store in Payson to pick up stuff to BBQ. Throw in a few ice cold beers and we had a great time. Our room as a great rock patio with 2 rocking chairs to just soak up the cool mountain air.

The creek below is great if you have kids and there were a few people pulling some small fish out of there. Our boy had a great time.

The property is pet friendly so if you have dogs and want to bring them, go for it. We also heard that they had a stable with pony rides but didnt get up there to see it. There is a pool, restaurant and saloon that they had live music in as well. The whole place is great.

On our way out in the morning, we crossed the highway and drove the 4 miles up to the fish hatchery is great for kids as well.

My only gipe is that I've lived in Phoenix my whole life and we only just now discovered this place. We will definitely be going back.

I have loved this spot since my first visit over 30 years ago. It is all about the location. If you live in Phoenix and it's 115 degrees sometimes you just need to cool off. In about 90 minutes you are in the cool pines and will need a jacket at night. Behind the lodge is a creek you want to jump in as soon as you get to.

My daughter enjoyed many family visits to Kohls ranch so I treated her to a night and she came back with rave reviews. A standard room is great if you get it facing the creek. Much better than facing the pool. You can sit out in the evening and enjoy a glass of wine on your patio. The pool and playground were enjoyable and they had no complaints on the food in the lodge where they liked breakfast the most. Only complaint I heard was the beds were NOT comfortable - but neither is a sleeping bag if you were camping.

Now I want to book one of the 2 bedroom cabins for my grown kids to go back together. It's a place we have all loved and now can take the grandchildren.

Picnic Griller was served for $15.95 - we received one hot dog, or one hamburger, or one chicken breast/pot. salad. Tried to negotiate price with GM & Rest. Mgr. Didn't do anything but take our money. If you plan a trip to this area, don't turn in to Kohl's Ranch go on to another spot - you won't be taken advantage of!

We had a great time at Kohl's Lodge. We booked a cabin right next to the stream #204. We caught 10 fish between the four of us from the stream. Our cabin was very clean inside and out. Everything was stocked well in the kitchen. We just had to bring the food to grill. The hot tub on the deck was a wonderful surprise. The staff was very nice and attentive. This is a great place for families. My kids had a great time playing in the playground, basketball, volleyball, mini golf and bocce ball. There was a fire pit going right outside the pool where there were free smores to make.

My only complaints: Check in time was 4pm. We came a bit early to see if our cabin was ready. It wasnt ready til exactly 4pm. I think for the price I spent ($260) for the night, check in time could be a bit earlier. We wanted to enjoy more of the day at the Lodge.
The restaurant next to the lodge was disapointing. They had very little staff for a busy night. There was no apoligizing just a "deal with it attitude". We were charged for drinks we never ordered. The food was disapointing and very overpriced. Either go into town for food or bring your own. They have clean propane grills all over the property. Do not spend a penny to eat at the restaurant. We weren't the only ones who were disapointed.

Went with family and reserved a 2 bedroom delux. We had the confirmation number Front desk said sorry you can only have a 1 bedroom because someone wanted to extend their stay. We paid our points and maintence fees. The manager took us to see the one bedroom. What a shock! It smelled bad (maybe mold) and had dead bugs in the cabin. The view from the small porch was a dirt lot. The bed which I tested had an old and very used matrress. I was told by the manager that they over book all the time. This is against federal law. Lesson learned: Don't think your going to get the delux accommations even if you have a confirmed reservation and had already paid the points. What a fraud!!!! The staff was not helpful or friendly! Run from Kohl's Ranch Lodge.
