We have been stopping at the Wagon Wheel Saloon for years when passing through Patagonia, Arizona. During our first visit in January 1998 I ended up owning some land nearby a few days later. Not sure how that happened. Anyway, this is a really fun restaurant/bar. Yes, it has some dead animals on exhibit and a number of rusty historical items on display and it certainly is worth a stop when passing through (or living there). I am sure that it changed ownership over the years and current owner Don Hawkins has really upgraded the food selection and quality. We recently stopped in for a Sunday lunch with a group of 9 and bellied up to the bar. The owner said that he liked my shirt (Arizona State University) from which he graduated, but Jerry the bartender said so what, he is not getting served. This is University of Arizona Wildcat territory. Lot of fun and our group had some really good cheeseburgers and fries with some having delightful Mexican dishes.

The bar most certainly has some local color, which adds to the fun. Circle-Z, a local dude ranch, often arrives with a group on horses for a beer and burgers before heading back to the ranch. Horses are simply tied up outside. In the book "Crossers" by author Phil Caputo a couple of years ago, the Wagon Wheel was mentioned, when the lead character in the novel, who was from the east coast, walked into the bar and commented that this does not look like a place one would order a dry gin martini. I think that is probably true, although they do appear to have a couple of martini glasses behind the bar, just in case.

Patagonia also is the home for some winter residents who are world renowned authors. Rumors are that they are frequently in the Wagon Wheel late in the afternoon when they are in town. If you are looking for fine dining, this is not the place.....go a block up to Cose Buone which is excellent and not so colorful later in the evening. Recently late at night the Wagon Wheel had a customer who decided to knock out eight windows with his fist. Bad boy is in the slammer.

We didn't know what to expect, but sounded interesting. The inside is plastered with walled animals and such. Comfortable booths. Fast and nice service. Good and varied choices. Better then average food. No desserts though darn.

Friendly service, and interesting decor. No smoking inside which is great! Very good burgers and onion rings.

Don't know how to spell it but had a great time. The crowd was friendly and the beer cold.
