This was my 5th holiday in Samoa over the past 10 years and the 4th time I have stayed at Faofao. This is a well operated family business who genuinely care about their guests. The fales are tidy and functional and food yummy, with plenty of choice and amount. The Saturday night fiafia entertainment is not to be missed and includes a great fire dance. This is an authentic village experience so be mindful it's not going to have all the features of a resort. It's island time, you have shared shower and toilet facilities (along the lines of a DOC site camping experience in NZ), and sometimes things aren't available when you might like it (e.g. cold beers) but that's what these holidays are all about. It's an inexpensive option, with great hosts and a lovely environment with the sea almost at your door. I'll be back.

Stayed one nite in one of their rooms with ensuite. Host and service were warm, friendly and accommodating. Dinner and breakfast was served buffet style, but think this depends on number of guests they have at time, there were more than 10. The food was tasty and filling (4 mains and two side choices. There was no set checkout time , again this would be dependant on pre bookings. The beach ... beautiful. Overall, good value for money.

I stayed at three fale in the two weeks in June. Vaiula, Fao Fao and Lauiula. I picked them for the activities they offered. Vaiula - caving, canoeing, snorkelling and fishing. Fao Fao bicycle rental and snorkelling. Lauiula samoan canoe, fishing and snorkelling. All were fantastic, and highly recommended.Best about Vaiula is dave's private cave, location of beach from main road, and Nugg the aussie barman. Lauiala - gorgeous beach as beautiful as lalomanu, good snorkelling and chatty Richard for his stories on samoa.

Fao fao - turned out there is no bicycle for rent. Broken down. However the first dinner simply got my most favourite fale vote. Beef soup with vege, octopus, fish, chicken etc what a yummy feast.subsequent dinners though not as many dishes are still the best among the three fales. Besides the food, the fia fia night, the sunday umu, the beautiful voices of the singers, the friendly family members from young kids to old including the young chap who wants to be my son in law, though I can't say I feel like part of the family, I did feel more than a tourist guest. It is this feeling and the yummy food that I like fao fao most.

Other small gestures - free use of office pc and internet if just checking email and very short use. Free lift to ocean trench with owner going to apia.

Ok, lets start with the positives:

+Idyllic location. Situated right on the beach with a stunning outlook to the ocean with its fringing reef. Swimming is safe and snorkelling is ok. There's also the backdrop to rugged mountains and vegetation.

+Beach fales. This makes for an authentic Samoan experience. The fales are situated on the beach. Basic but comfortable. The water comes within a few metres of the fale at high tide. There's also basic hotel room accommodation if you prefer.

+Family. The business is operated by locals and their extended family. You get a valuable insight into the culture that may be lacking in large hotels. Fia Fia dancing is performed on wed and sat nights. Umu is the traditional underground cooking provided to guests for sunday lunch. Meals are basic but tasty and served buffet style. Breakfast is typically fruit, pancakes, eggs and toast. Dinner is fish, chicken, maybe sausages, rice and taro. I'd also recommend a visit to the nearby village Church on sunday mornings.

There's a few negatives.

-Service. Things really do happen on island time and this may be frustrating for some. They clearly have some inventory (and financial) control issues - warm beer and no bottled water at times. Guests had to wait 30 mins for breakfast one day while they went to the shops to get some eggs! One of the owners had a habit of asking guests to swap large notes for smaller ones - so they had change.
-Shared facilities. Shower and toilet facilities need more attention. Flimsy shower curtains and toilets needing a good clean and no toilet paper at times. There were more than a few instances when there was temporarily no water available for showers etc.
-Security. While the village is a relatively safe one, there were (isoloated?) instances of theft. Our swimming goggles were stolen from our fale and one of our neighbours had their snorkel mask taken.
-Noise. We didn't sleep peacefully in the fale. Noise does travel in such a quiet location at night especially seeming the fales are close together and near the main road. On two nights, there were locals occupying a nearby fale that were very noisy well beyond midnight. Also, we don't recommend you keep food in your fale as we were visited by dogs and rats.

In summary, if you;re looking for an authentic island experience on a budget and service and quality of sleep aren't important - this is worth consideration.

We spent 3 nights at this basic accomodation on the far side of Upolu Island in Samoa. They are recovering from the effects of THE Tsunami and a devastating cyclone last year. We chose not to stay in the beach fales because we are older & the mattresses on the floor were just a little out of our comfort realm. Instead Gosetta offered us a "motel" room with ensuite facilities for the sma incredibly low tariff which included a daily feast at breakfast & wonderful evening meals. The room was very basic but the bed was huge & the toilet close. We had a fan & louvre windows to keep us cool. It was hot & humid and we had periods of Liquid Sunshine every day.It was a relief not an inconvenience.
The people here were so very friendly and helpful at all times. There was a bar ,unfortunately we couldn't access it easily because of a group from NZ who had hired it out for bible classes??
Instead we travelled down the road a few kms to a swishier place & partook of our cheap(yummy) cocktails there!
The beach was wonderful, the reef accessible & I hear the surf was "gnarly"?
You will enjoy time spent here.

We were blown away when we arrived - white sand, great snorkeling and even a little (average) surfing right out front! Highly recommended!!

Expect basic fales on a beautiful white beach with good food.

A good stop off point for a few days, but we recommend checking out Savaii too.

Room Tip: Make sure you settle on a taxi price before leaving

Great people! Seta and family made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived.
Food was fantastic, you can tell they really make an effort.
My partner and two other travellers there at the time had specific dietary requirements and they made extra effort to make sure these guests were well looked after, not just fed like in many other places.

They had a few guests leaving on our last night and a few had shown interest in Samoan food, so they made the effort to make a traditional umu and demonstrate traditional food preparation techniques. They even put on a traditional dance for us all! Really lovely people!

The shared toilets were regularly cleaned, and the the showers were simple but adequate.

The only issue we had was that there was no breeze on the first night and we found our open fale very warm. Not their fault at all... and normally you would expect a nice breeze to keep you cool in the ocean front fales. They also have rooms which I was told have fans or a/c so if you struggle sleeping in warm temps maybe go for them. Otherwise the ocean front fales are great, excellent mosquito nets, spacious and just about on the shore!

We didn't get to go snorkeling, but were told by others it is really good there. The beach was great!

Stay here!
