“Samoana Resort ... I'll be back (again)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2009

Had such a great time last October with the family, this time came back with the lads to just max out on as much surfing as possible. Surf guides Clark and Brent were great again they really show you a great time ... although Clark would froth over anything they both provided us with awesome experiences. Surf was pretty consistant each day however the highlight being the all day trips on the boat ... completely stuffed however stoked and ready for the beer on ice when we got back.

Downside was the tossa of a surf guide (Neil) from Coconuts thought he owned the place and every wave .. no wonder the locals want to take him on a one way fishing trip, certainly gives Coconuts a bad name.

Apart from sideshow Bob, totally recommend Samoana Resort to anyone looking for a fantastic holiday that can be as relaxed or as busy as you want.

This is a beautiful resort with many things to offer non-surfers. The fales are spacious, breezy with nice ceiling fans, very clean and the room we had included a private outdoor grotto shower. There isn't much of a swimming beach, just one small area that's best at high tide, but the natural salt water pool built into the rock is a great way to relax.
We did 3 daily tours with our guide from Australia, who was friendly and really fun and willing to adapt our trips to what we wanted. The manager couple from Australia was friendly and always willing to help. Sunday nights included a fabulous bbq cooked by the managers. All of the meals were excellent, and the included breakfast choices were varied and really tasty.
World class snorkeling is right out front, you don't need to go out far to see amazing sea life and coral. The main fale had a pool table, bar (with a great bartender) and a big screen tv. The location along with the reasonably priced activity tours make this a great destination for all types of travelers.

My partner and I stayed at the resort for one week. We were forced to cut our trip short after our room was broken into while we slept. The resort owner was unsympathetic to our trauma at being woken by a stranger in our room. He refused to meet with us, or to take basic measures to improve security such as locking the resort entrance gate at night, employing any security staff or providing guests with protection such as stronger locks, more lighting around fales or a means of contacting staff at night in the event of an emergency. The fales are set apart and have no phones. The experience was frightening and a costly reminder that travel insurance never covers all or even most of your loss. We would not recommend the resort at all, particularly not for children who might be even more distressed by the various frightening encounters we had with locals.

  • Liked — clean, comfortable and amazing views of the surf
  • Disliked — lack of security, no phone, isolation, bad lighting at night, open front entrance gate at night,no security guard no reception desk. They admitted there have been previous break ins at the resort, but guest rooms remain vulnerable.

It was very unfortunate what happened. Anywhere on this planet an incident of theft is possible. Everything within the powers of my Management Team were done and offered to these 2 young guests but unfortunately they felt the need to depart the resort. Samoa and Sa'Moana Resort would be amongst the most friendly and 'SAFE' destinations on this same planet.
Again all possible was done and offered and they left the resort well compensated, our business is hospitality and happy memories !

We had a group of 12 and one baby stay at the resort for 9 nights and all of us would go back again. We had the 6 bed fales which were great and enough room for all of us. We were able to swim/snorkell straight out the front of the resort and also could either walk or kayak to other beaches around the resort. The 6 surfers in our group had waves everyday, the surf guides were great. We explored the island in hired car and the staff were always on hand to give suggestions of places to go and must see areas.

All of our group, which ranged in ages from 16 to 65, loved it. It wasn't an upmarket resort like coconuts - thank god - it was open and clean. I would recommend this resort for people of any age, either for a couple or group. We are already planning our return.

this is my second review, as we have returned to sa'moana resort. we have stayed in sa'moana previously, last year and were very excited that they lno longer have the 5 night minimun stay. so we booked in 3 nights. we booked a large 6 bedded room. as there were 6 of us and a baby. they don't have an "issue" with kids here, which is welcoming for families.
the resort is very well manitained the gardens are beautiful and the outlook is amazing. our room had 4 single bed downstairs and a double upstairs with a small composting toilet and shower . some of the other rooms have beautful lava open style bathroom, which management told us they are planning to upgrade all the bathroom, eventually. all the lined is ok , you also get a towel.
the resort has many hammock and swing chairs placed around, so it's lovely to relax.
the main area, is great! also comes in handy if it rains, as you have somewhere to hang around. there is a pool and table tennis table. there is a bar (and they have happy hour!!)
the resort offers day trips to various places (weather permitting)
as well as surf trips ( a few a day , also depending on the weater) but we arn't surfers and it dosn't matter, ( actually you get the resort to your selves for some of the day (when they go out onthe surf trips)
this place has a friendly relaxed feel about it and we enjoyed our stay and will be back. the staff are frinedly , they have a great aussie chef, so the food is really good. we loved it here.

For the first 5 nights of our recent trip to Samoa we stayed at beautiful Sa'Moana Resort. We chose this place because 2 of our party of 4 are surfers and the guided trips were very appealing to them. Don't be put off if you are a non-surfer because the resort offers lots for you too - over half the people that were there during our time were not surfers. If you are a surfer this place looks after you very well with 2 live in surf guides and boats - our 2 surfers went by boat to the reefs every day and had some fantastic waves.

Sa'Moana is in a a bit of an 'out of the way' spot and is a small scale resort with only 7 fales (maximum 26 guests) which we really liked. However, we had a rental car so we could explore the area too (about an hour from Apia) but they also offer trips to places of interest every day except Sunday if you don't have your own wheels and want to see some of the island. Mixing with the other guests (particularly in the evening) in the central fale was great and we made a number of new friends.

The food was excellent and well priced and our fale was very comfortable. It had an outside shower area in a walled garden that was amazing - currently only 2 fales have this but they are going to progressively introduce these to the other fales. The grounds are lovely with lots of shade, and hammocks and deck chairs for relaxing in.

We kayaked around to Virgin Cove exploring the inner reef and a lagoon not meeting another person. We also snorkelled right off the resort and saw a lot of fish and good coral (I thought the coral was better than at Lalomanu but probably not quite as many fish). The only problem is the snorkelling is quite tide dependent - too shallow at low tide and often have too many waves at high tide so you have to time it right.

I was tempted to give this resort 5 stars but I thought I would mark it down a couple of things - it doesn't have a swimming beach (although they make up for this by having an excellent infinity swimming pool) and that it doesn't except bookings in advance of less than 5 days duration. The access road from the main road is also pretty rough in parts. If I could give it 4 and half stars I would.

If you want to come to a place that is small and relaxing, has great staff that make you feel special and has delicious food - this is the place for you!

  • Liked — Quiet relaxation in beautiful setting with friendly atmosphere
  • Disliked — No swimming beach

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are a small 3.5 star remote, idyllic beach resort located at the end of the long, windy Salamumu beach road (about 6km track off main road). Our simple colorful wooden bungalows are all absolute beach front with their own private outdoor lava rock bathroom, private deck and of course fabulous beach and Pacific Ocean views. We are the perfect location for active families, couples and singles who want to totally switch off from the World for the length of their stay and be "Off The Grid" and see the real Samoa and maybe want something a little different from the standard "out of the brochure" vacation. We have an all-day bar and restaurant with comfortable seating for a sunset cocktail, good music including traditional Samoan tunes and great vibes. All our staff are local so can share their knowledge of the best places to visit, and the stories of the real Samoa. We do a weekly cultural show and a traditional Samoan Fire Dance and Haka display every Thursday - free to our guests. Guests are welcome to surf out front - its intermediate to advanced level and you need to bring your own board. Surf Tours can be arranged with local operators when you are here. There are several within 20/30 minutes of our resort. Car hire is highly recommended so you get to see the best of our beautiful island and discover your own magical parts of it - we can recommend lots for you to do and provide a map and some local advice. Please note we are not near any public transport, shops or other resorts / restaurants - we are literally a tropical island hideaway!
