“Good value!”
Reviewed April 29, 2007

Vaiala Beach Cottage is low-key (even their roadside signage is easily overlooked!) but in terms of comfort and space you're probably getting more for your money (US$50 a night) than anywhere else. The cottage feels like a real little home (the owner Nigel Burr, an ex-Kiwi, lives in one of them himself) with full cooking facilities, a spacious bathroom and easy chairs and a very comfortable bed. Nigel will help you with any little thing and it's just a short walk into town but far enough to hear no traffic noise. It would make a great base from which to explore Samoa: book in for the first few nights to get your bearings, then leave your luggage in Nigel' s safekeeping and romp around the islands with just an overnight bag to sleep in open beach fales etc. Come back to Vaiala Beach Cottages for the last night (or two) to clean up and pack and get set for the return to the real world!

We stayed at the vaiala beach cottags for 9 nights, with two small children, the staff were helpful and friendly and very relaxed about everything, nothing was too much trouble. Great location right on the beach the fenced garden is a definate plus so you know where the children are!!
We really enjoyed a relaxing break, and the children enjoyed it- too the swimming is ok close by , its where all the locals swim, only a short walk or bus/ taxi ride into Apia and several local shops close by/ Accomadation is not 5 star but everything worked well and with the cooking facilities etc made it perfect for families.
There was plenty of hot water.Colour tv, friges, fresh linen, nice gardens.

I stayed 3 nights in a cottage. They looked to have about 7 cottages. They are located technically right on the beach. However, a barbed wire fence and narrow dirt road separates the property and the beach, so don't expect to go running out of your cottage onto the beach. Also, the beach here is rocky. It's fine for swimming, but you'll want to put on some reef shoes first or be careful. Plenty of locals would use the beach here.

The Vaiala Beach cottages are very close to the 1848 Princess Tui Inn, which you'll pass as you walk to/from Apia. About 5 minutes away from the property was the Palolo Marine Reserve. For 2 tala (more if you need to rent snorkel gear) you can snorkel in here. It's a great snorkel place--look for the giant clams in cages. The walk to central Apia was about 15-20 minutes for a moderate paced walker.

Taxi fare to Vaiala Beach from the airport was 50 tala.

Positives: Huge cottage, clean and breezy. 3 or even 4 people could have fit in mine and still been comfortable. Full kitchen. Great staff. They lent me (free) snorkelling mask and fins, and would have lent me a kayak, but the currents were too strong and it was a double kayak, so I couldn't!

Negatives: few, really. The hot water did not seem to work, although I saw the hot water heater attached to the cottage. This didn't matter to me--I never needed it, usually one wanted the cool water to help cool off after walking around. There was no AC either, but two powerful ceiling fans and open windows kept the cottage breezy and comfortable. The roosters roaming around (so typical in Polynesia!) will wake you at dawn. Earplugs helped.

Summary: if you're looking for a pure beach resort, where you sit on the beach all day and do nothing else, look at one of the resorts on the southern or southeast parts of Upolu. If you have less time and want to see more of Apia (RLS museum, etc.), be centrally located, then stay here, and then do a drive around Upolu (either hiring your own car or driver) to see its sites.
