Insel Fehmarn Hotel
Ranked #12 of 29 Hotels in Apia
Reviewed July 4, 2007

I stayed at Insel Ferhman with a school tour group and it was a great experience. There is a great pool and lovely breakfast every day and a little pizza shop just around the corner. Each room had a television, kitchenette, balcony and the service was fantastic. The hotel wasn't about staying in first class but about seeing the real culture of Samoa. Closely located to several bus services and a great place to stay on a limited budget.

I'll keep the good news for last. The bad news is:
- I got a "premium" (second floor) room with a not so pleasant smell. I suspect the airconditioning unit was causing it. A few insects in the fridge and on the walls, plus dirty, stained tablecloths and a very old bathroom made me decide to ask for another room.
- the second room I got, deluxe on the third floor, had an even fouler smell. Quite frankly, I have never been in hotel room that smelled like this one, even old and very much used smoker's rooms smell better. Maybe it hadn't been ventilated in months, but in any case that smell came and wnet to the room for the 5 days I was here. Complained to staff but nothing was done, not even an air refreshener or something. I know many other rooms are just fine in this hotel, so I may just have been unlucky, but this is simply unacceptable.
- airconditioning units are extremely loud. In fact they woke me up at night sometimes.
- insects are not really problematic, this is after all a tropical country, but this hotel has more than other places in Apia.
- smelly old bathroom. Mold on the shower.
- 2-channel TV without remote control
- on one evening, there was no room service available because they didn't have a cook.

The good things:
- very comfortable and clean bed
- very nice food in the restaurant. Especially the Friday-night BBQ is highly recommended
- has many amenities such as business centre, pool, shuttle service, laundry.

Conclusion: acceptable as a hotel in general, very good food, but due to the many bad aspects, not worth the high-end image and high price. As a frequent traveler to Samoa, I'm not staying here again.

Insel Fehmarn is a great hotel. The rooms are spotless and have nice little homey touches. The beds are extreamly comfortable. I love the kitchens in the rooms so you can get some snacks or sandwich fixings to have with you when you go exploring. The food was very good. The pool area was kept up and very relaxing. The people who worked there were very helpful and very nice. Overall I had a great experience at Insel Fehmarn and would higly recommend it.

I chose the Hotel Insel Fehmarn after reading somewhere that it was clean and air conditioned. First impression was that it was comparable to a Stateside Motel 6, a Spartan room with just the basics, bed, bath, TV. It also had a small kitchenette with a table and chairs. I was less than impressed, but then Hotel Insel grew on me. As I saw more of the Apia area, I understood how much cleaner and more comfortable Hotel Insel was than its environs and began to appreciate returning to my room after a steamy day in the hot sun. All the rooms face south towards Apia and the harbor. The water view is a mile distant, but it is still a pleasant view, over a large athletic field and lots of greenery, particularly at sunrise and sunset.

The Dining Room is a major asset. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It was a delight to deal with them and I missed them most on leaving. My first real meal after a long haul from Hawai'i, decided to start with a traditional Samoan dish as an appetizer, Oka, raw fish marinated in coconut juice. It was delish and I gobbled it up, but then had little room for the Matai (Chief) sized fish dinner I had ordered! The portions were so large, I had to scale back on my meals while staying there. The breakfast buffet was gratis while I was there, too. But get there early; this perpetually late bird didn't usually have much to choose from! I didn't use it, but the Dining Room also provides meal delivery service to the rooms, aka Room Service. And lastly, I went to the Aggie Grey Fiafia and the Hotel Insel Oka is MUCH tastier!

Hotel Insel has a Business Center where one can use a computer to access the Internet or print out documents. Fax and copy machines are available, as are meeting rooms. The Business Center staff is also friendly and helpful. The sparkling pool is so inviting after a sweltering day but I saw the tennis court used more often. A laundrette and convenience store round out the Hotel amenities. There appear to be several long term residents since I saw some very well-stocked kitchens while walking to my room.

There were a few glitches in the stay, but nothing that would prevent me from returning. After e-mailing back and forth, there was no record of my reservation. Hotel Insel will pick you up at the airport if prior arrangements are made. I thought they had been, but later found out that if they hadn't been dropping off a departing guest, I would have had to take a taxi. In spite of the missing reservation, I was still given a room and my bags were carried up to my third floor room, unlike the review of another Apia hotel! The only other thing was a small portion of the tile grout in a lower corner of the shower needed to be spritzed with a weak bleach solution. Other than that, the room was very clean and pest-free, though, having lived in Hawai'i, wouldn't have minded a few gecko visitors!

Getting around is fairly easy. The Hotel has a regularly scheduled van into Apia several times a day. You just have to let them know if you need it since it doesn't run if there is no call for it. The Hotel can also arrange a rental car and there's a rental car outfit a few doors up the road. Many local buses pass by the Hotel but I found it convenient to walk out to Falealili Road and grab the next empty cab. However, finding a taxi in downtown Apia in the pouring rain during afternoon rush hour is just as daunting as in Manhattan!

Hotel Insel Fehmarn is NOT a plush, beachside resort and, being there on personal business, I never got to see the north shore resorts that others raved about. But if you need to be near Apia for business or other reasons, and especially if you need comfortable, long term accommodations on Upolu, Hotel Insel is the place to stay!

We have just had one week in Samoa - we stayed the first 2 nights at the Insel then went to Savaii for 4 nights and back to the Insel for the last two. I negotiated a good rate by phone prior to arriving. I picked the Insel because of the previous review and the fantastic comments. I was looking forward to the awesome view of the harbour - whilst realistically there is a nice distant seaview. I would stay here again but do not think it qualifies for awesome report it was given. The hotel is very average, room service good, had a few little hiccups over minor things which with constant persistance things were put right. Staff in the Restaurant were fantastic, we loved them and that would be the drawcard for us to go back and stay there again. Busing to town is right outside and only 50c each. Taxi 3 Tala.
What I would recommend 100% is their BBQ night on Fridays - the food selection and quality was FANTASTIC. We also had a Island Night at Aggie Grays which we enjoyed but the food was not 1/2 as tasty and interesting as at the Insel. Also see my review on staying at Savaii - Janes Fales.

We returned 3 days ago from Samoa. Our 1st visit and we will be back! Our stay was incredible! We have toured throughout the So. Pacific and the Insel is one of the best hotels we have stayed at! We also stayed at Aggie Grey's this trip and you can view my other comments there. Everything at the Insel was top of the line. Ok, maybe the rooms are a little stark but walk out on the balcony - an awesome view of the harbor! Pool is great - bartender even would move the tv screen so we could watch from the pool! Free shuttle service to town Mon - Sat every 2 hours - made this hotel truly a dream. It is 1 1/4 mile uphill from Apia - no way we could walk it in 90 degree heat. Our shuttle driver went out of his way daily to accommodate us. The A/C in the rooms is the best! Lynn's market right down the street is open longer than all of Apia's grocery stores and served all our needs - fully stocked. Insel offers facilities for self-catering - rare in Samoa. Facilities included microwave, rangetop, stove, refrigerator. Breakfast buffets were great. Most of all - every staff member made us feel like family. We had never experienced such a warm welcome daily from EVERY member of the staff! Can't say enough about this place - but hope that not too many find out about it because we would like to keep it our secret! We plan to return to the Insel and don't want it to be sold out!
